Why are countries releasing prisoners due to COVID-19?

I think it is dangerous to release criminals because of COVID-19. What if they go out and start committing more crimes?

I personally think they should be kept in jails (specially the dangerous ones).

I feel for them as a fellow human being.

However, this is irresponsible. It is suicide to release them. I think it may cause more harm than good.

Coronavirus scare: Islamabad High Court orders release of low-risk prisoners

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Friday ordered the issuance of bail for prisoners who are facing trial for minor crimes in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minullah made the decision after hearing a case regarding 1,362 prisoners being incarcerated in overcrowded jails.

During the hearing, the court inquired from officials if prisoners who are facing jail-time without having been tried could be released.

Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Hamza Shafqaat assured the court that no prisoner held at Adiala Jail has been infected with the virus.

However, Justice Minallah worried that the coronavirus outbreak had worsened in China after it spread among prisoners.

He said the prisons in Pakistan are in dire straits and if (God forbid) any prisoner becomes infected, the situation would get out of control.

While responding to the Advocate General Islamabad’s query that if the relief would also apply to prisoners facing NAB trial, the IHC judge said that the court has already told the authority to avoid ‘unnecessary arrests’.

The court also ordered the release of suspects currently in police custody.

My solution is to keep them in jails but tell them to maintain social distancing. If they don't listen, too bad.

Criminals shouldn't get free passes.

To stop C19 going through the jail like wildfire, completely overloading the medical facilities, and killing thousands of people. A lot of jails have no hospital wing. They are only equipped with primary care services such as GP, dentists and mental health workers.

You can’t maintain social distance in a jail.

Sure, the UK prisons arent in great shape but they get 3 meals a day, gym, tv, games console,health officials on site, hospital wing and allowed to have many items sent in.

The issue is lack of funding which means UK's jails are overcrowded, many are in cells which hold 2 people but designed for only 1. So they are worried about rioting if prisoners get scared of being infected and dying. Something which the prison service simply cannot handle.

You do the crime and you do the time, regardless of what's happening outside.

It's the Tory governments fault once again. Because of their incompetence , the public should be put at risk?

I think resources should go toward innocent people first. Not criminals.

People are dying in thousands anyway. Why should criminals get special treatment?

This is something which disturbs me too. Like can't there be a better strategy then letting these criminals go free. They are already isolated from the rest of the society and since the virus has to come from the outside just make sure it doesn't happen.

If jails are overcrowded, then you've no choice. And most countries jails are overcrowded.
