Why are there no more Sharjah Cups, Sahara Cups between India and Pakistan?

Between 1990 and 1997, India and Pakistan didn't tour each other and play any test matches with each other or tour each other for bilateral contests. However both teams played each other frequently in Sharjah Cups and Sahara Cups

Sharjah Cups in 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997

Sahara Cups in 1996, 1997, 1998

I wonder why these tournaments were scrapped. I am sure there is plenty of commercial interest for Indo Pakistan contests in the UAE and Canada/USA and if the ICC can give these contests official ICC sponsored status then hopefully the Indian Govt will not have any objections.

Frequent Indo Pakistan contests are good for the players, it will help Pakistani players not choke as they did against India in Melbourne from a match winning position.

Sharjah was the hub oh match fixing in the 90s. So Indian govt banned Sharjah in 2000 after the match fixing expose

Sp after that India played bilateral series only with Pakistan. But the ended after mumbai attacks

It’s the Indian government’s stance that playing pakistan will help our economy.

It is an unreasonable and immature stance.

They also do not wish to forefeit points in ICC events - so it’s not really based on any strong principle.

When people will look at history 50-60 years down the road, they will see India’s behavior as fascist and discriminatory. It’s already being recognized.

That’s pretty much it.

Because India has become the superpower of cricket thanks to the failed scoop of MisbahulHaq, also Indian cricket has come out of average Joe like Amy Khurasiya Vijay Dahiya Saba Karim Deep Das Gupta & Debasish Mohanty, henceforth no interest in these dubious cups

History is written by the winners, so probably not. I dread to think of the state of Pakistan cricket in 60 years time. We could easily be buried while a 9 month IPL runs for everybody else.

UAE is beyond Sharjah now, you have other venues like Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well which are not known for being hubs of match fixing.

Right now India won't play Pakistan anywhere ( post Mumbai attacks )

But the original ban on Sharjah happened due to court ruling on match fixing after the 2000 expose. In fact India did play Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2006. Also played in tournament in Holland in 2004

But post 26 / 11 even that came to an end

Devang Gandhi , MSK Prasad , Vijay Bharadwaj , Ajay Ratra , Hrishikesh Kanitkar , Sameer Dighe

Still remember those dark days :P

I disagree that we will be gone.

Our best product is PSL. We need to focus on having a 9 month psl also

India had become a cricket superpower long before that misbah scoop. By 2000 India was already the biggest market.

IPL was a done deal before india won Wt2007.

After the Mumbai attacks in 2008, Pakistan became kosher for India in the Aanay do series that took place in 2012-2013, but the humiliation that ensued forced BCCI to renege on its promise of a return series.

all the above players we are laughing about are domestic giants.they are currently in various coaching and administrative positions producing the current generation players.they may failed in internationals but are not to be laughed about.

Can we, for once, find an iota of shame and take our head out of India’s rear end and try to look beyond the pathetic and shameless obsession of playing with India?

I mean the people who control Indian cricket, and a large chunk of their BJP supporting public won’t even spit at you, and you hope that India should “help your players” by playing with you, and that will make you stop choking in international tournaments?

Fact that these players were domestic giants and yet looked so pathetic in the international arean - tells u how pathetic our domestic set up was in those days

I still remember Devang Gandhi in the 1999 Australia tour. He batted like he was some tailender sent out to open :facepalm

Sharjah Cup was a classic tournament. Good old days.

Would love to see that tournament back (Sharjah tri-series).

The political situation between Pak and Bharat was far better during the Sharjah days. Now India can not go back on not playing Pakistan after raving on about it for years. They have tried banning Pak artists from their dying Bollywood and Music industry that didn't at all work. With Pak not moving an inch on their stance on Kashmir India only has Cricket left to bargain with. We will only be playing India at ICC events at least for the next ten years. Sharjah Coca Cola type matches were rather boring from the little i remember.
