What's new

Why are we playing our full-strength bowling attack in the ODIs against Zimbabwe?

What are we gaining by playing Amir and Hassan in this series surely the likes of Shaheen and Sameen could have been selected and showed their skills and givin us more options with our bench

Thoughts?

Yes but what happens if one of the new kids turns out to be a real gem and makes it difficult to drop him , then our seniors have their places in jeapordy. -- and as you know in Pakistan cricket, protecting the places of seniors is most important thing ..

I would have agree with you but this is our last odi series(glad if some one correct me about it) before all important asia cup so we have no option but to finalize our team combination.

I think the team management are building a tempo for the Asia Cup and subsequent important series. As Mickey Arthur has learnt from the past, you give these players 6 weeks of rest, and they come back in such a bad shape that it takes them a month to get back in full flow

Is asia cup really that important especially with World Cup less then 12 months away I very much doubt India picks their best 11 for Asia cup

We should be trying new players for this series but our think rabk love seniority. Hassan Ali and Amir could have been treated and we still would win the series 5-0

For us it is important .india plays large amount of cricket they will only rest when there is serious injury while on the hand we will play our only third odis series/cup so what is solution

Does not make any sense, was high time to try some ones, sending back Shaheen was not a very wise decision.

I agree with you, should have rested both aamer and Hassan.

Also sarfaraz, Mallik, Hafeez, even Fakhar should have been rested.

Farhan, Talat, rizwan or umair masood, agha salman, zeeshan mallik, hasan mohsin, saud shakeel should have been tested.

Correct. Plus Pakistan last played ODIs in January- that's six months ago!

The only question is why Shaheen isn't even in the squad.

Only Amir could have been rested otherwise Shadab, Hassan, Faheem, Shinwari are all pretty new to the game and need to gain as much experience as they can.

Fakhar is still to play 20 ODIs overall and you want him to rest. He needs to gain experience

Pakistan hadn't played an ODI since January 19, 2018.

They don't have another series until mid September (Asia Cup).

Would you guys really like your full ODI squad to not play for 8 months less than a year before the World Cup?

Talking as if they will be coming off 8 months of no cricket.

We must take into consideration that we have the world cup on the horizon and Asia Cup in September which would give us a great indication on how our squad is.

FGS the WC is less than one year away. Time to settle the team down and give them as much exposure as possible. They can try out all the new things after the WC.

Invariably, pakistan team with unknown players will be much more lethal than known faces.
CT final is the prime example, no one knew how the young players like FZ,SK, Hassan will play, no one even knew how Hafeez would play. And that was the biggest asset pakistan team carries- the X factor. Opposition team can not work them out before the match and had to weaknesses during the game.

Predictable Pakistan team is a lamb for other teams. They know what weaknesses of Ahmed Shehzad is, what weaknesses of Hafeez is , and can make a plan against them. On the other hand its hard to gauge young player. SO UNPREDICTABILITY, and HAVING NEW FACES IN NEXT WC is the way FORWARD. AND I AM RELYING ON PSL 4

My guess is probably win series @ 3rd ODI and then play with the bench bowling. I feel they're being very careful with SSA

It is pretty pathetic...

Our team management doesn’t know how to rotate players and our B team is non-existent at the moment...

Why does Pakistan keep playing big players like Mohammed Amir and Hasan Ali against Zimbabwe?

Both of these players shouldn't be playing together in the same 11 against a team like zimbabwe, let alone being player together in 2 consecutive games. This series is the best time to test our bench strength and it should be done from the beginning of the series rather than after we win it. Surely the team management should have more confidence in their bench strength.

I guess this team needs some odi practice before Asia cup we just been playing T20s

Haven't played ODIs in six months.

This, this and this.

Not sure why everyone is asking the same question again and again lol.

Team also needs to test out their bench strength as much as possible. The likes of Hasan and Amir are part of our best 11 regardless of how much practice they have had.

They will test bench strength once we have won.

I have been thinking of the same thing. I feel that Inzimam and Mickey have missed a trick by not testing the bench strength in this series. Here is what they should have tried:

Openers: it is ok to play Fakhar and Imam as openers. Imam is trying to earn his place and Fakhar is still only 15 ODI's old, so he needs to score big here and feel established at international level. However, what is the sense of picking Hafeez as backup opener? What will Hafeez gain by playing against this weak Zimbabwe side or what will the selectors/coaches find out about Hafeez what they already don't know. Would have been much better to select Sahibzada Farhaan or someone else to give them a chance to train with the team and get familiar with our dressing room.

#3: Babar at 3 is ok, specially since he is coming back from an injury.

#4 & 5: we are playing Shoaib Malik and Sarfraz at these numbers. I feel that on of them could have been rested and I would have opted for Sarfraz. He has been playing all three formats and being both keeper and captain has a lot of responsibility. This would have been a good time to give Sarfraz a rest and give 5 games to number 2 keeper. If number 2 in line is Rizwan, then he could have easily slotted in at number 5. This would also allow the management to appoint someone captain in case Sarfraz gets injured right before world cup or gets suspended due to poor over rate.

#6, 7 & 8: Asif Ali, Shadab and Faheem are ok. They need to play a few games and get settled into his roles. Specially Asif and Faheem.

#9,10 & 11: this is where I think the management made the biggest error. Both Amir and Hasan have been playing non-stop cricket. Amir has publicly asked for rest and Hasan has faced some calf/chin injuries in the past. Both these guys should have been rested. Specially since we have Junaid Khan, Usman, Shaheen and Faheem in the side. I am not sure of Rumman Raees's fitness but if he was fit, then that's another viable option. I don't think Pakistan or Amir & Hasan are gaining too much by playing against this weak Zimbabwe side. On the other hand, by playing these games, Junaid would have gained bowling rhythm and Shaheen valuable international experience.

Amir and Big Player? A fast bowling version of Zulfiqar Babar is no big player, had he been named Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali, Junaid Khan, Imran Khan jr, he would have been benched by now.

His stats are not that great (30+ in ODIs against non-minnows and 33+ in tests) but he is still a big match player and the opposition batsmen respect him.

In two matches against an opposition like Zimbabwe where we picked up 20 wickets, Amir the spearhead of the attack has only 1 to his name. Who happens to be no. 10 batsman. I would have given him some leeway but his inability to do his main job has become a predictable trend now and not just something coincidental.

The only reason there is no proper uproar and he is able to hide from his failures is that they aren't costing the team much at the moment and other bowlers are able to make up for his non-performance. For how long though?

Time for some serious consequences.
