Why aren't Pakistan really looking for a right-arm off-spinner?

When the test squad against England was announced. Iftikhar was supposedly to be tried as an off spinning all rounder. He gets one game and is discarded for the west Indies series. I agree that he'll get game time in the first class circuit but I strongly feel he should have been tried as the all rounder simply because he is a right arm off spinner as oppose to the 4 to 5 left arm spinners we have coming through.

Mohammad Nawaz needs another season of 1st class cricket to allow him to mature. Also Pakistan tend to get carried away when they find someone with potential and I'll go even further to say Mohammad Nawaz needs to be slowly brought into the mainstream. I don't want to see Nawaz play every game from now on and not get any rest.

I'm glad we have Mohammad Asghar waiting to replace Zulfiqar Babar. He's currently playing against Zimbabwe A. He's a massive prospect and will be ready in a years time. Happy to see him given an extended run in the A team.

A few weeks back I read 4 leg spinners have been called up to NCA as PCB are looking for yasirs back up.

So to conclude, PCB is looking for a leg spinner and left arm spinners everyone knows about but off spinners are no where to be seen in the national set up. We really need to find a proper off spinner or off spinning all rounder as the number of lefties coming in the international circuit is increasing. Also it's a must have variety as we can't rely on Shoaib in the long run.

Can someone get this message across to the PCB.

Many thanks

Why there is not a single quality spinner in our domestic circuit? Very strange and shocking, @ TalentSpotter

babar azam can do this job, he will be good with the time.....

The best Offspinners we have in Pakistan is Mohammad Asif but he is 33.

He was the highest wicket taker in Gold aswell as Silver League (Amongst Offspinners) in 2014-2015. Multan got relegated and he has not played since than. It was duty of PCB to induct him into some other regional team like they did with many other players.

His Strike Rate is superb for an Offspinner.

After him the second best is Nasir Awais. He is also 33. He does not have a very impressive Fc bowling average but his Last 3 seasons bowling average is under 25 and he spins the ball sharply at good pace and has very decent control over line and length.

Junaid Nadir is also good but he is very raw and inexperienced.

None of them is under Radar and we will only see Legspinners & Left Arm Spinners playing for Pakistan in near future.

Is it necessary?

Offies always get tonked anyway in every format .. unless you possess the mystery weapon the doosra which isn't always legally obtainable. T20's made it even harder for genuine offspinners.

Please let him stick to being a batsman. Dont want another case of Haris Sohail. Maybe this injury Haris got was because he wad asked to bowl a lot of overs for the first time in his career..

Why do our fans insist on making mediocre bowlers out of perfectly fine batsmen?

Not only do they end up being terrible bowlers but the batting also regresses big time

Exactly, and it is vise-versa. Look what happened to Irfan Pathan, a terrific bowler. BCCI tried to make him into an all-rounder and he lost even the art of bowling and is not even in contention of selectors anymore... I fear the same might happen to Ashwin.

Take a look at Ashwin bats in the top 6 and possibly best spinner in the world. Players shouldn't be hindered to develop.

No matter how good he is. Let's all face it, he's gotten all his runs on favoring pitches and poor bowling attacks.

Dynamics have changed now. Horses for courses is the name of game in Limited formats.

In first ODI against England, Mashrafe Murtaza didn't bowl Shakeeb when two BENs (Lefties) were at crease. If your opposition's middle order (3-7) has 3 lefties, you will need 6-7 overs from an off spinner again LHB, even if he happens to be a part timer. Dhoni had frequently used Raina for 4-8 overs spells.

OTOH, against West Indies, Azhar Ali was operating with Shoaib Malik in a 10 overs block from 14-23 when two RHB were at crease.

Mohammad Asif has left cricket.

Now it's between Bilal Asif & Ashiq Ali.

A very good start at domestic cricket for Ashiq Ali. Will definitely catch eyes of selectors since there aren't many offies around.

There is another very talented off spinner who isn't playing domestic and was spotted at Ramadan T20 cup. Forgetting his name. Should not be neglected any more.

Nasir Awais on the other hand is A bit too old for Int cricket debut but is a very good off spinner nonetheless.

Ahmer Ajaz is the other guy.

At least one out of Ahmer or Ashiq should have been picked for PSL.

Too many SLA spinners in PSL and again Karachi picked another left arm spinner from talent hunt.

Ahmer bowls with good loop, gets bounce and most importantly he can turn the ball sharply.

Because our think tank don't think about the future and lack cricket intelligence.

Arthur and Sarfraz are an exception.

We will see Ashiq Ali play Semis & probably final aswell.

Excellent tournament for him uptil now.

6 matches 11 wickets.

His teammate Asghar also had a good tournament.

7 matches 13 wickets.

UBL team is really strong and hot favourite to win the tournament.

Let's see how Ashiq performs in televised games. Fingers crossed.

These days it doesn't seem at all that the selectors are looking. The only time they are forced to consider someone is when the guy does well in the PSL.
