She only won Karachi and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

Rest Ayub won. Why?

Ayub Khan called Fatima Jnnah an Indian agent lol

This. She was also murdered by the establishment. Its tragic and eye opening on how the deep state is cold hearted when it comes to protecting their interests.

Ayub Khan and his cronies were very disrespectful to Fatima Jinnah. They called her Indian agent because she migrated from India  basically they spread racism and use her ethnicity against her. The 2 major ethnic groups (Punjabis and Pathans) get influenced by this racism and majority of them rejected Fatima Jinnah.

Important to remember that the 80,000 Basic Democrats collectively formed the electoral college for the election and so Ayub was indirectly elected. As the Basic Democrats were the brainchild of Ayub, it was always unlikely that a sufficient number would vote against him.

Nevertheless we need to acknowledge that Fatima Jinnah’s campaign against Ayub’s regime generated enormous popular enthusiasm, which was crucial in the long-run in undermining Ayub Khan. Although Ayub’s control of the machinery of government and the restricted franchise secured him victory, the moral foundations of his regime had been shaken.

This is rubbish, im sorry but the general population was up in arms!

I know, especially how our politicians are also raised by them. A certain party with the leadership sitting in jail comes to mind yet their blind posters still defend them.

Right Slim. :rabada2

Shaikh Mujeebur Rehman was her polling agent. Imagine the shock of getting robbed of the government by the establishment twice!!!

She was born in Pakistan, so your conspiracy theory doesn't hold up.

Wasnt aware she lost. Shows our intelligent nation or shall i say the corrupt system

it is factual that only Karachi and East Pakistan voted for her and there were protests after the loss

And Ayub Khan and his son carried out a massacre in Karachi once the protests started and this laid foundation of Mohajir-Pashtun tensions

Also the most shameful thing: Ayub Khan's son publicly paraded a female dog with a necklace around the neck and called it Madar-e-Millat

It’s a moot discussion, it was not a direct election. Ofcourse the dictator was going to win.

In all honesty, the election was rigged, so the results dont even matter. Why would Punjab or KPK or Balochistan or the rest of Sindh not vote for Madr-e-Millat? That doesnt logically makes sense right? They even censored her speech on Radio Pakistan. Its all the karnamay of the establishment. They are pathetic.

True, thats why even our political structure is hollow because these generals know how to pull the leash of these politicians who are corrupt to the core. Its just sad, the state of whole country.

The answer is the same as any question to do with who wins elections in Pakistan: Establishment

Did she win the popular vote in 1965?

That’s the point: there was no direct popular vote. Under the system Ayub had constructed, elections were held in 1964 for ‘Basic Democrats’ - effectively Union Councillors. These were elected in the main by popular vote, but the allotment for FATA - representing 9% of the total number of Basic Democrats - came from direct appointments rather than elections. The total number of Basic Democrats amounted to 80,000 and they collectively formed the electoral college for the Presidential elections in 1965.

As the Basic Democrats owed their power to Ayub and as voting for Fatima Jinnah could have risked voting in an entirely new system which either dispensed with the Basic Democrats or clipped their power, it is not surprising that they opted in the majority for Ayub. Fatima Jinnah was however able to prevail in three major urban centres - Karachi, Dhaka and Chittagong.

Ayub could also use the machinery of government and state media to his benefit. Although difficult to know how widespread, there is some evidence of pressure being put on Basic Democrats, through either intimidation or bribery to vote for Ayub.

This is unfortunately how the electoral process works, people hardly get to choose their true representatives.

She was dubbed an Indian agent and a smear campaign was started against her. People from Karachi and Dhaka (the main urban centers) mainly voted for her.
