Why do some protesters shut down roads to protest?

What kind of nonsense is this?

Here in GTA (Greater Toronto Area) today, some protesters have decided to block roads. As a result, trains/buses couldn't function efficiently. Many people were left stranded. Check here: https://www.cp24.com/news/go-transi...ervice-amid-scattered-rail-protests-1.4826332.

I have seen this happening in many places. Do protesters ever achieve anything with this type of protest? What type of punishment should be handed out when people protest like this?

Handful of people have taken hostage the whole Canada. Rail transportation across country isn’t moving. Thousands of people have been laid off and our spineless, extreme left, bend me over PM is as clueless as always.

I am a registered liberal but this is ridiculous. They shouldn't punish regular people like this. Ordinary people just want to work and/or go to school. They don't need this type of nonsense.

I may sympathize with a cause but I will never sympathize with anarchy.

I’ve said this previously too. Protest to your hearts content but do it in a manner that you gain peoples sympathy not their anger or animosity.

I know people that were caught up in this after work with their cancelled trains. It’s not great. You’re not going to achieve anything by making life harder for average people.

There’s nothing to sympathize about. Indigenous and environmentalist people won’t let you build any infrastructure. Gas and oil pipelines will create hundreds of thousands of well paying jobs. Mega projects like these bring in billions of dollars of investment. Then these people complain that no jobs are being created. It takes decades to build oil and gas infrastructure because of countless court hearings and appeals. Sometimes I wonder if we need China style policies to get things done.

Bet this spineless PM will say just bend me over please. He was completely shut out of the Western Canada but thanks to desis he won a minority parliament. This guy will run Canada into ground. We need to get rid of this guy and elect a majority Conservative government either led by Baird or Mackay.

I agree with the premise of this thread. At no stage protesters should hold rest of the people to ransom, however justified their cause is.

In India, shutting down the city is the first thing any protest will start with.

In a socialist society, Bandh’s. Rasta Rokos are the go to things to get your point across. Left liberals are all for these kinds of pathetic gimmicks.

I think they should throw in ice cold water at protesters who block roads. Cold water shouldn't kill them but should make them uncomfortable.

They have to be made uncomfortable so that they leave.

I agree that protestors should not disrupt the lives of others.

To play devil's advocate though - maybe this is a (only?) way to get more attention. For issues impacting a minority (I don't mean in a religious/racial sense but in numbers), they could keep protesting in a little corner for weeks but if the majority is unsympathetic and disinterested, the government can simply ignore the protestors until they tire out.

I was speaking in general terms not specifically about this cause. Also, I am not against the pipeline.

I've been a Trudeau critic in the past but he has handled this as well as he could. He has stayed true to his ethos and hasn't dealt with the protests with brutality. He also hasn't canceled the pipeline.

Half the country is for the pipeline while half of it is against it. Trudeau is showing patience and giving the protesters an opportunity to come to the table to find a resolution. If that doesn't happen, the optics will definitely change and my assumption is Trudeau will then show some force.

Trudeau is being criticized from all ends for this which is unfortunate. The conservatives are saying he doesn't care about the Canadian Oil & Gas industry while the leftists claim that Trudeau doesn't care about Indigenous rights.

As for a Conservative majority, people in Ontario are regretting that right now by having Doug Ford as our premier. I would've never voted for Scheer. The Liberals are the best representation of my personal values. I value education, equality and freedom. But I am also pragmatic enough to know that a socialist economy cannot work in Canada.

Under the right leadership, the Conservatives could be a good option but it's still the old (white) boys club right now. Proof of that is how Ford became their provincial leader. And lest I remind you as you criticize Desis for leaning towards Liberals, enough of the conservative party and who they represent do not view coloured people like you and myself as equals.

No one in their right mind would protest unless they are paid to do so.

Canada needs to decide if they are a democratic nation with laws, or they're a banana republic where anyone can do anything. If it is a democratic nation with laws then all those protesters should be put to jail. Democracy means majority wins. If majority first nations approved that gas link pipeline then that is it. That's democracy for you. If one doesn't want it then so be it, you can't hold the whole country hostage.

Pretty sure at the end of the day it is about money the chief wanted, which obviously won't trickle down to its people as they are already living in poverty. Atleast pipeline in their land means employment for the poor natives.

Anyways, Canada has law so that should be maintained.

As immigrants our values and ideas are more reflected through conservative party, i find.
That being said, the only way to win election in Canada is win Ontario and specially GTA. Conservatives need to shun their racist and homophobic attitude and have a proper leader. The only reason why so many people don't vote for them is because of their racist MPs. Some need to be fired.

Liberals under Trudeau are the same as they were under the older Trudeau. They divided the country. The only reason why Trudeau wins is because of his social efforts and hands down to him, he excels in it, and that is the only thing he does. Him and his cabinet has no idea how to run a country. Our dollar is falling and you can blame Liberal leadership for that. Canada's economy is directly tired to the natural resources section, so if that goes well, Canada's dollar will improve. Right now it may not for another 3 years, until a better leadership shows up (Conservative or Liberal).

NDP = No Direction Party
Only time NDP was reasonable was when Jack Layton was alive.

And next step in protests like these is to burn vehicles. :inti

In India its pretty easy to burn vehicles during protests and get away with it. Most of the time its burnt by those begairat people who can't even afford to buy a bicycle. :inti

In my opinion, it is still better than right wingers burning down buses and shops.
