This is something which really bothers me and we have had a huge problem of really defensive captains in the last 18 years, the last really aggressive captain who would go for the kill whenever the opposition was in a strife was Wasim Akram. Moin Khan had his moments but he became a very defensive captain at the end.
Since then it has been awefully downhill with Waqar proving to be a defensive captain and it just got worse with Inzamam and later Shoaib Malik.
Younis Khan went to the other extreme where he started off with blindly attacking regardless of the match situation and pitch conditions before he started to mellow a little but too bad his temperamental nature meant that his hold on the team was never going to be permanent.
Yousaf was the worst captain in our nation's history and the way he captained the side and his tactics, decision making, field placings was utterly disgraceful for such an experienced cricketer in that 2010 Sydney Test Match.
Afridi by his verbals and attitude gave the impression of aggressiveness but deep down he carried on the tradition of being a defensive captain when the chips were down and the pressure was on.
Misbah by nature was a defensive individual, batsman and captain but too his credit he had mastered the art of on field captaincy in the UAE and over time had understood when to attack at the expense of defence but unfortunately he could not change his tactics.
Everyone felt Sarfaraz being the wholehearted Jazbati Street fighter and aggressive cricketer along with the aggressive firemouth natured Mickey Arthur would take Pakistan Cricket away from the Misbah brand and slowly and eventually transition into a more aggressive team. But my frustration with Sarfaraz's inability to learn from his mistakes and his horrifying frustrating habit of making the same mistakes test match after test match is now pushing me to tear my hair out.
How many times have we seen Sarfaraz take his foot of the peddle by keeping very minimal fielders close to the bat, by not have fielders inside the circle to block the singles and by spreading the field allowing batsmen looking to build a partnership, consolidate settle in at the wicket and then he does not bowl Yasir Shah for an hour after lunch and neither does he use the likes of Hafeez and Haris Sohail or Azhar Ali or Asad Shafiq or even be willing to try anything different to break a set partnership? Even his ability to bat with the tail is non-existent.
But the whole point of this thread is that why our Pakistani Cricketers such horrible defensive captains? Do they not teach these things at the NCA about a deeper understanding of the game? And lastly can Mickey Arthur not send in a word to Sarfaraz via a substitute or have a word with him during the innings break? What are the senior players like Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq doing during this whole time?
Extremely frustrating
