Why don't we have as many retractable-roof stadiums in Cricket?

The thread is self explanatory. Cricket is played in countries like England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, the Caribbean etc and these places experience heavy rainfall almost daily. Why don't have retractable-roof stadiums which can save us from the loss of crucial games i.e WC finals, knockout matches etc

The way some go on about NZ's weather, you'd think every game is rained out. The weather is great, it's the scheduling on NZC's behalf and facilities which are poor.

Too expensive

Modern Day cricket makes a lot of money. I'm sure each country having a couple of stadiums wouldn't make anyone bankrupt! Heck, even Pakistani's are building one..

It would cost an absolute fortune to build something suitable for cricket. To put it in context Wembley stadium with a roof covering a playing area well under half the size of a cricket ground cost $1bn.

First, it would be ridiculously expensive to cover an entire cricket stadium with a retractable roof.

Not to mention the costs of maintenance and electric... Can you imagine the electric bill for lighting up an entire cricket stadium for 5 days

Second, cricket is move dependant on weather and conditions than pretty much any other major sport (besides golf). Playing under a roof would take a lot away from cricket

I don't think retractable roof is completely an absurd idea. Sure, you can't have an expensive project which cost a fortune but something like a structure which can support a tarpaulin.

can we have something along the lines like this?

Not a bad idea, but you have to keep in mind that stadium was built by an NFL owner with help from the government in the USA.

That said, there are some covered stadiums in baseball and even multi-use. The Rogers Centre in Toronto Canada is highly flexible and has hosted baseball, football, cricket, American football, and a variety of other sports. The downside? It cost $570M...in 1989. Prices would have only gone up since then, although it would be less since a cricket stadium would start as a single use facility.

Cricket doesn't make money and almost half the boards work based on money from ICC.At best we should target good drainage systems,BD has done well on that.

I am sure, we can find some cheaper alternative though. Just that the absolute need hasn't arised yet but the impedance of which can't be ruled out.

And yet, some want more Test matches. Cricket won't survive then....

BCB is going to make one like that in the new model town, purbachal beside dhaka with capacity 100000 seats. Hope they make it soon. The National Sports council will also be shifted there.

Like a few guys already mentioned, this stadium does not need to be primarily limited to the sport of cricket. If we can have other sports such as football, American football etc also be suitable to the ground then all different sporting bodies can contribute

Football would result in either the boundaries being too short for cricket or the seats being miles away for football.
