Why is Chess haram?

Because the Queen is in close proximity to the Bishop, who I assume is na-mehram to her?

Apparently, the suggestion arises from the distracting nature of the game, resulting in the delay or missing of religious obligations??? Supposedly.

That could be said for anything that engrosses one to the state that they miss their obligations.

Why is chess haram? I see no logical reason of this and if anyone knows why, please go ahead.

I would urge the OP to refrain from making posts with titles such as this, making it sound like he a religious authority on such matters and can with certainty state that such and such is halal or haram.

Making such statements creates nothing but confusion and uncertainty among followers of the religion.

It is one of those situations where one of my friends back in college was adamant it was HARAM to receive or give blood transfusion to non-muslims.

So say the Luddite mullahs. They also called the printing press a work of the devil.

Wasn't chess an Arab invention in the first place?

I don't know. I don't know why music is allegedly haram either

Why would it be Haram? It's a great exercise for the brain.

Sometimes these Mullahs really get on my nerves for misleading people.

Using TV,camer etc was Haram too but gradually all Mullahs started coming on tv shows, started their Islamic channels so it no more Haram unless you watch stuff that's Islamically prohibited.

Similarly no sport is prohibited unless you play it with a bet or it makes you miss prayer .etc

Mullahs are not here to create laws but implement God's laws and guide people towards God's laws. As far as I know God doesn't prohibit people from playing chess or watching tv unless we are breaking his rules while watching tv or playing chess.

Was first told by my parents then searched it up and found it to be haram again.

Was first played in India.

Scholars have mixed answers about this. Some says its haram because it keep person so busy that he or she forget his/her prayers and all and also the inclusion of betting. Some says its not harram but its makrooh. Some say its halal if you play just for time pass and it doesnt make you un aware of your islamic responsibilities.
And also, some statues type things are involved in chess, so its a sort of disliked game. And yes you have searched on google so may be you have found some hadith saying it is from Bukhari shareef that if you play chees its like to touch swine e.t.c
but it refers to backgammon which was popular in the time of the Prophet and was play for gambling.

Chess must have been invented by a woman. The role of the king and queen are swapped in chess.

I think that queen used to be a vizir in the original version and it made sense that a king would make the vizir do his dirty work when he is safe in his castle.

Why dont you share some proper sources with us other than your parents? :)

I agree with this, but time has changed now. People, or at least people I know don't gamble when playing chess. Therefore, the rulings must be changed.

all those reasons can be applied to cricket, any other sport or form of entertainment.

ab banda apney ap ko bilkul maar ley, koi tafreeh nahi, bus musalley per bheth ker allah allah karo.

thats what they want from you as a muslim.. no wonder we are in the state we are in.

chess with out gambling and all is legit, not haram. But it should not make you ghaafil :)

Let me just speak my mind.

A. I play Chess
B. Chess is Haram
C. I'm a Harami.

That why i said chess without gambling and all is legit, not haraam. But yes, it should not make you ghaafil or un aware of your prayers and e.t.c

well that should go without saying, shouldn t it?

Nothing should make you ghafil but there are things like that all around us.

TV, cricket, more than average love for your family, friends, whatever, too much love for working in the outdoors, any sports whatsoever, golf (cuz its not a real sport), carrom, charas, video games, phoondhi,

they can all make you ghafil, all around us.

But why is that they had to make a special case for chess and put in clause that "it should not make you ghafil"

stuff that can make you ghafil are all around us, every day and night, and we just cant escape them. lets face it. call it as it is. we just like to over complicate things and have certain bias against some things.. like self gratification in a plane toilet.. it is not haram but frowned upon. WHY?

I mean I am just saying.

This thread :))

Time pass keeps trumping itself, first moon is an alien space ship and now this !!! :))

Keep it up time pass, you make my life worth living

Those who make such ridiculous and misleading claims should be haram.

By the same token, PP (especially this Timepass section) is 'Haram' also :yk

Charas to haram e haram. They word i used it SHOULD not make you ghaafil. There are very complications about these board games, and the main problem is that it draws your full attention and make you ghaafil. So mostly whenever the question like this, people use this clause.
We can't escape them, but we can handle them.

And if you go ahead and play a game of chess in spite of this rule, what's the big deal?

It's not Haram. If something stops you from religious obligations than you should stop doing that particular duty.

You might as well call playing your PS/XBox etc haram too.

It depends on you and how far along you go down the rabbit hole and forget you obligations. Btw the obligations also include your Family too.

I dont see why would it be haram, may be because the pieces have faces on them but then too many things have human or animal faces on them.

But as its an Indian thing so automatically it may become Hindu hence haram. Like Yoga, or Zero.

So their is some diversity of views among different Scholar. doesn't sound bad.It is upon you to follow whom.
chill out

Lol!! nice one man!
IF the concept of zero is haram, then entire computer system based on Bonary is Haram!!
Omg, the sinners all of you!!!

In the same way of thinking, anything can be classified as 'haram' since it takes your mind away from religion.

What an idiotic way of thinking, can't wait for these scholars to arrive in the 21st century.

Including this forum.

Parent these days don't know about anything. They are just using religion to stop you from wasting your time. Just keep playing chess and don't listen to anyone.

Well if Chess is haram then pretty much everything is haram.

Why bother do anything at all when you can devote that time to praying?

Only a matter of time before they label that too as haram.

What nonsense!! Any kut-mullah believing this nonsense should get his head tested. It should be haram listening to such kut-mullahs, seriously.

So authorities can stop the tournament or game in Saudi Arabia, but locals don't care or taking it seriously.

Didn't want to open a new thread, so i guess I posted here.

Well, its true with any competitive event or any game. May be they should ban exams as well.

I am not sure if Saudis think twice or discuss with each other before coming up with such things.

The God in the various religions seems to be like a 5 yr old self playing video games .... Just wanting to win and gets mad when lost, or faced stiff competition from someone else. Make a huge fuss and cry! :P

everything is halal unless its haram...lol

pp is haram too as you lot spend so much time on here I bet your missing your namaaz..!!..

on a serious note, please use logic and ukul. Everything can become haram if you neglect your Islam because of it. That is why the prophet PBUH has asked us to follow the middle path. better to avoid these sort of topics as we are not well versed in these matters and you may inadvertently cause problems with this thread..

only stupid people with no knowledge think this way or portray their religions as such.

I have been a really good Haram ee since the age of 10 if chess is haram.

chess was created by Muslims as technique for becoming better warriors

chess was created by Muslims as technique for becoming better warriors

Nope it was originated in India, like arabic numerals which also originated in India!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess

Chess is believed to have originated in Eastern India, c. 280 – 550,[28] in the Gupta Empire,[29][30][31][32] where its early form in the 6th century was known as chaturaṅga (Sanskrit: चतुरङ्ग), literally four divisions [of the military] – infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariotry, represented by the pieces that would evolve into the modern pawn, knight, bishop, and rook, respectively. The earliest evidence of chess is found in the nearby Sassanid Persia around 600, where the game came to be known by the name chatrang. Chatrang is evoked in three epic romances written in Pahlavi (Middle Persian). Chatrang was taken up by the Muslim world after the Islamic conquest of Persia (633–44), where it was then named shatranj, with the pieces largely retaining their Persian names.

You point it out correctly, Chess improves war skills, it definitely cannot be Harm... Well this is one of the favorite activities of Mr God!!

It is Allowed by the shafi's, however considered makruh (disliked) however most of us are hanafi, and the hanafis prohibit it.

Stupid Fatwa, this makes no sense at all. These mullahs have really given a bad name to Islam.

Muslims should reject this mufti's words instead of taking it as gospel. Come on.

Whenever men scratch their beard while doing something it's 100% a haram act.

Anyone who has a beard longer than fist length cannot be taken seriously. It's the international symbol of ignorance.

Lol!What is next?Tv,mobile or PP?One thing I hate about these Muftis and Scholars is that they never really provide us with a solid reason as to why they had to proclaim it haram.Since all this stuff wasn't declared haram in the time of Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W)if I am not wrong, they can't call it haram without stating a an appropriate reason. As far as I have comprehended, anything that diverts a Muslim's attention away from his creator is Haram. If a Muslim ignores his religious duties such as Namaz and incessantly wastes his time on futile things, only in those circumstances, such things can be called haram.Simple!!But what can we say about our Islamic Muftis.Tv had also been declared haram by them when it initially gained popularity until they started to enjoy it!Lol!Chess is a boring game so I don't blame him!

This is just a fatwa , fatwa is basically opinion of a scholar , it cannot be taken as revelation.
