Why is Pakistan investing in substandard players when they have highly talented youngsters?

How come exciting young talents like Mohammad Huraira and Mubashir Khan have been ignored again while boring and impactless individuals like Shan Masood and Agha Salman retained?

Huraira has topped the domestic chart for two seasons and has also scored runs at healthy strike rate. He can change the DNA of Pakistan batting in test cricket. How are they still persisting with a 33-year-old Shan Masood who averages just 29 after 26 tests?

Mubashir has a FC batting average of 41, which is slightly better than Agha's average of 33 and he is a way better bowler.

Almost all of Pakistan greats made their international debuts in their teens or early 20s and even in recent years, there are plenty of youngsters who have been fast tracked. But why these two consistent performers have been ignored especially after a whitewash?

They will too come in and found wanting.
How many players have we tried and tested since the days of Waqar Younis as a coach?
Bet we've given more caps than any other country in every format in the past 5 to 10 years.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Having followed Pakistan since the early 80s home series against India; I came to realise one thing after years of head bashing ... 'Just enjoy the ride!'

1 of the reasons why Pakistan used to do well in 1990s was because Pakistan used to throw 16-19 year old cricketers in international cricket and some of them even used to do well too. Shahid Afridi, Aaqib Javed, Abdur Razzaq all debuted at just 16. Shoaib Malik and Waqar Younis at 17 and all of them had good careers. Why selectors play safe now rather than take risks

1 recent example is Kamran Ghulam who could have been given a debut when he was 19-20. He had a good start to his domestic career and after 9 years in domestics, he has been picked finally when he is 27. There could be many more such cases too

If Pakistan wants to improve, then selectors should start taking risks and give debuts to 16-19 year olds. Mohammad Huraira should be picked for the Tests against New Zealand

We saw that how crap those 16-19 year olds were in the PJL so unless the player is of rare talent it is safe to let him grind the domestic season for atleast 3 years.

Wasn't everyone pining for Shan Masood when he was putting up all those runs in domestic?

I guess we need new players to pine for until we are ready to discard them in a bit.

Im sorry but thats the not the way to go Taking a risk on a player may pay off every now and then but leaves a trail of dozens of disastrous careers and results in its wake which this team cant afford

Its a haphazard way of selection by throwing in kids and seeing what sticks In this day and age newbies can get worked out very quickly and it can ruin them as they arent ready

Just look at our naseem who is struggling with the demands of playing high intensity tests when he has little or no fc experience

Look at what is happening with abdullah this series and how hes getting worked out

For every afridi theres a hasan raza or imran nazir

Pakistans history is strewn with 18-20 yr old prodigies and debutants who never made it and have been one or a handful of test cap wonders

The best way to do this is get young kids to play FC and after 3 years of success get them into the team at age 24 with some experience and when they know their game

At the moment we are undercooking them or leaving it too too late when they are past their best

Throwing in new kids in deep end can ruin careers before they even have a chance to take off

I'm not aware that it happens now but in the 90s Pakistan A and U19 used to tour Australia, England and the West Indies. Players like Akhtar, Afridi, Azhar Mahmood, Saqlain etc were picked from their performances on these tours. These tours helped the players to get familiar with playing in different conditions. So when they made their debuts they immediately made an impact.

As far as subcontinent team goes Under-19 world cup performance is usually tell tale sign of what is in store. Bangladesh won the under-19 world cup in 2020. One of the member played a role in BD's first ever Test win in SENA countries. Shoriful islam. Eion Morgan, Kohli, Smith, Kane, Babar, Travis Head, Hazlewood, Shaheen were all under-19 products. I can't recall a name that is outstanding from the 2022 edition.

Who said that these youngsters are highly talented? 99.99% of them are garbage.

Talented youngsters today but tried & tested failures tomorrow.

None of them were actually 16.

Don’t worry with Najim Sethi at the helm our youngsters are automatically going to become world beaters.

They are topping domestic charts at a very young age

Won't do worse than the likes of Shan Masood and Agha Salman

Its not a case of talented players being selected but also the mindset of the team they will be joining. Look at england squad, the same players selected but under a different captain and coach. A change of philosophy is what the pak team needs.

Yes secondary to that the selections need to be better. Choose a mix of veteran first class players, with 2-3 young ones for the future.

Bowling seems like the main concern at the moment for the longer fomat. The likes of Naseem, Hasnain, Wasim, Dahani need atleast 3 full seasons of 1st class cricket before they will be ready for test cricket.
