Why Pakistan cricket team needs a coaching stint from the great Wasim Akram?

Proven Experience as a successful coach and talent spotter

Wasim Akram is an absolute legend of Pakistan cricket. The man has won multiple laurels with the Pakistan cricket team (PCT) both as a player and as a captain. But one thing that still eludes his illustrious career is a deficiency of glory with the national side as their coach. There is no much scepticism regarding Wasim’s skills as a coach. As he has already proven his worth as a serial winner by winning silwerwares for different franchise leagues around the world. Two IPL titles with Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) and one PSL title each with Islamabad United(IU) and Karachi Kings (KK) are just some of his coaching accomplishments. Also there is no denying of his great knack of hunting young talents for teams. To name a few, guys like Mohammad Amir, Junaid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Kuldeep Yadav are just a few names in his long list of golden picks.

Better grasp of Pakistan’s cricketing culture and players’ mindset

Another benefit of having Wasim Akram as Pakistan’s bowling coach would be his great acquaintance with the cricketing culture within and outside Pakistan. Certainly a player who has remained a part of this system for more than 19 years can tender a better advice than any outsider who is naïve enough to understand the complex political dynamics within the Pakistan Cricket Board.
In words of late Australian top coach Dean Jones, “It’s important that anyone who wishes to work and succeed in this environment (Pakistan) must try to understand the culture of the country and the mindset of the Pakistani cricketers” Thus because of this factor Wasim Akram would be an excellent pick for the team Pakistan.

Bowling woes of Pakistani pacers and need of a seasoned figurehead

Another factor that makes Wasim’s coaching stint more pertinent than ever is the ongoing poor run for the Pakistani pacers. Recently, Pakistan star pacer Haris Rauf was at the receiving end of a despicable record of conceding most runs in a single ODI World Cup edition and his fellow pacers like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali were also somewhat unimpressive with the ball. Despite the fact that they were performing in flying colours just before the commencement of the ODI World Cup. So in order to resuscitate the deadly bowling skills of our pacers we need a maestro like Wasim Akram who not only knows how to swing ball well but also equips a number of bowling subtleties that can disguise any great batsman into playing false shot. Thus, Wasim Akram’s selection can result in imparting of these skills to our youngsters too and therefore, a change in their fortunes.

Can allay the probabilities of injury for players through his vast experience.

Another area where Wasim Akram’s rich experience can come handy is the injury and fitness related issues of our players. Many decent pacers of Pakistan like Rumman Raees, Junaid Khan, Rahat Ali etc have had a sporadic career with the national side owing to their intermittent injuries. Also in the last couple of years, we have seen Pakistan star pacers like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah missing much of the action in cricket owing to their own unfortunate injuries. So in recent times, the injury-plagued seasons of our players has been a great source of headache for team Pakistan and has been the chief reason of their unsatisfactory performances in the recent ICC events. Therefore, it is high time to appoint a coach who is deft in dealing with injury related issues and has also dealt with them brilliantly in his own cricketing tenure. For this, we do not need to look any farther as our very own bowling legend and Sultan of Swing Wasim Akram has been master of it. In his own words

“I went to the gym only in the final three years of my career. I played 10 seasons for Lancashire and would have played around 100-150 first-class games. Here you play these pacers two first-class games and they won’t get out of bed for six days. Their bodies are not used to it.”

Wasim’s phenomenal mentorship and excellent bowling prowess on overseas venue

Wasim Akram’s stint as bowling coach for Pakistan can also be a game changer for Pakistan as besides a good coach and bowler, he is also a good mentor and great players like Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami have developed greatly under his mentorship. Recently Mohammed Shami’s former bowling coach has also acknowledged this influence. He said “It’s Wasim Akram who made Shami the bowler he is today. ” Besides this overarching influence, Wasim also has an exceptional bowling record at overseas venues and that has been of lately a great issue for Pakistani pacers who struggle to take wickets on overseas venues. So this is another area where Pakistan’s bowling unit need a desperate help from him.

No language barrier with players and great men management skills

Former Pakistan coach and players like Dav Whatmore, Abdul Razzaq and Moin Khan have all pointed out that the language barrier does affect the execution of plans for the team Pakistan. Besides this issue, we also need a good man manager who can hold the players together like a glue. Well, If PCB appoints Wasim Akram as our coach then we would not face above mentioned issues as being a good man manager himself, Wasim can do wonders for team Pakistan as he did before in the past for the multiple franchises that he worked with.

The only big hurdle: Wasim’s own reluctance to do coaching role for team Pakistan

With mammoth bowling experience, Wasim can offer valuable services to Pakistan cricket team. The only big hurdle in the realization of this dream is Wasim’s own strong conviction against joining PCT as a coach owing to the abusive demeanor that PCT coaches have faced in the past. Wasim has also mentioned his little tolerance threshold as the reason behind his reluctance to do coaching duties for Pakistan. But at the same time his stated reservations do not hold any substance when you consider the fact that he has faced loads of criticism as a coach during his stint with various league franchises.

It is not like, that Wasim has not received a coaching offer before from PCB. Infact, PCB approached him formally in the wake of 2012 but he declined it then citing his personal busy schedule with different franchise teams. As Wasim Akram is no more overwhelmed with such engagements now so it appears he can perform the coaching duties for Pakistan. Also bearing in mind that our erstwhile top quality fast bowling unit is facing a host of issues since the conclusion of Asia Cup 2023. So it is high time for a bowling stalwart like Wasim Akram to step in and address the issues of our fast pacers by rendering them his valuable services and tips.

Conclusion

To conclude, Pakistan desperately needs a coaching stint from an experienced campaigner like Wasim Akram because the experiment with novice coaches like Morne Morkel and Shaun Tait has not fared desirable results for team Pakistan. Also Wasim Akram needs to seriously revise his decision of not to coach team Pakistan because if world cup winning captains like Kapil Dev and Clive Lloyd can perform these duties for their nations then why Wasim Akram can not perform these duties for his beloved nation. Also it would be a great disservice to Pakistan on part of Wasim Akram if he is OK with criticising the players on TV but is unwilling to share his skills with them on the field. Therefore, Wasim Akram should opt for a coaching role with team Pakistan as it is in the greater interest of both i.e him and our cricketing nation.

He has already mentioned categorically that he doesn't want to coach the national team. But I think he is the solution to our declining bowling lineup.
Yeah that appears to be a bit selfish. If he clings to this stance then it appears to be a disservice to our nation.

He has already served your national extremely well. Won you your only wc. He has a right to spend time with his family and enjoy a relaxed life, wasim bhai has earned it
Yuvraj Singh won India two wc one in T20I and other one in ODI but still people criticize him for his one false knock at T20 WC final 2014. We are not rebuking Wasim bhai but just asking him to serve his nation on the field rather than criticizing players on TV.

PCB cant afford him tbh.He would demand 1.5-2 million $ a year and if the pcb gives him that the media will keep on criticising the pcb after every poor performance.

Wasim already knows the inner workings of PCB. Anyone with right mind will stay away unless you are desperate need of money or its just an additional secondary job.

Akram's coaching experience is a T20.

There is a difference between building a T20's areseanal for 2 months and building a national teams aresenal for 4 years

so people without the right mind take coaching jobs? What kind of nonsense is this?

Chelsea FC fires its manager after every season, does that mean people without the right mind work with them?

Thing is whether the person wants to be a full time coach or not. Full time coaching requires certain skill and dedication. Yes, scrutiny by media is part of it. Which is why certain people do it and certain dont.

Akram will never do it because he can't dedicate working for one company for 2-3 years. Plus, if Akram takes the job, his PR will be destroyed as his fixing past will always be bought up when Pakistan will do bad, and that is something Akram feels very insecure about and tries to brush it under the carpet. Once, Akram's pr is destroyed his career as media personality is affected.

Hence, Akram feels safer earning money through media gigs rather than working with PCB and be scrutinized.

Seems to have a lot to say about Pak players

If not coach, then Team Director.

There were also rumors that back in 2021 Imran Khan offered him the post of PCB chairman. Not aware with the veracity of this claim. But still a contribution from him to PCT in any reasonable capacity would be much appreciable.

Nah, why would wasim destroy his reputation by getting into this mess and he is not an experienced coach anyway. Look elsewhere

Wasim can't make a difference with Karachi Kings, what makes you think he will be able to do anything with the national team?

As the President of A Sports, he still roams around the world and does his other part time ventures, he is getting a fat salary at A sports for doing nothing for most of the year bar the big ICC tournaments.

Wasim is now used to making big bucks for not much effort. Doubt a stressful position like the Pakistani team national coaching will entice him. Plus he has diabetes and a young family.

Good point. May be money can never be a parameter for him to join PCB as coach but according to the payback principle, he owes Pakistan a lot and the best way to return the favor is to hunt down more players like himself for PCT. As he himself once said

" He who loves not his country, can love nothing in his life,” ~ Wasim Akram

So can't he do a coaching stint for the love of his country?

Its the job of commentators

People dont like what commentators or analyst say but its their job to comment. Doesnt mean we start giving them job to run things.

A news editor isnt supposed to be made the pm of the country just cause he wrote a weekly editorial critisizing the govt

Frankly speaking, I don't think Wasim is that bright. He was a once in a generation cricketer but he is not the sharpest mind when it comes to analyzing the game. You can tell by his commentary during games and analysis during A sports. He parrots unnecessary stats during commentary and repeats the same stale anecdotes.

Wasim Akram has demonstrated a lack of interest in undertaking this role. He likely wishes to preserve his reputation and avoid associating himself with such a perilous job. It is both simpler and more financially rewarding for him to remain in his current role of providing commentary, and he should continue doing so

Thing is whether it is worth to consider to be a full time PCB's coach considering you'll have to manage immature players, manage PR, deal with administrators who lives in a whole different universe with logics no where to be seen.... Is it only coaching like other countries? Surely not.

When was the last time Pakistan actually performed? Coaches came and gone. People doesn't have much expectations. Most people have realized that, you don't need to "fix" with the current pakistani team. They will lose anyway. Considering this, not sure Akram will go through any scrutiny even if Pakistan loses.

How is it apple and oranges?

No manager lasts more than an year at chelsea if you dont win silverwere. Still top managers apply at Chelsea FC because it is a top club.

PCB is one of the top 8 cricket boards, so woth limited job offers at international coaching, working as a PCB coach is still lucurative. So dont go around trying to insult it.

The different between pakistan and an english board is that pakistan cricket will have a major fan following of the local population.

In any sport, which has a large fan following of the local population winning a trophy is much more difficult because of how the media and fand are after you.

A very good example is yhe NHL where a team lile Toronto maple leafs gets scrutinized by its fans and journalist alot and they still dont win even with a good roster of players.

So stop trying to make the PCB as one of the lind toxic place because you dont like it.

As for performance, someone can make same comments that when was the last time india won an icc trophy. Does that mean no coach should apply and try?

Exactly.

Wasim would be called clueless, useless and God knows what else within a few months of his stint.

Unlike Waqar he still has his legacy in tact.

I'll be very honest here,

As good as it sounds on paper (and has since his retirement)

Wasim doesn't want to coach Pakistan National Team (he doesn't like PCB, he things former players get criticized a lot and most of the times it is for no good reason and below the belt - I agree with below the belt criticism)

He's been holding the post in PSL for over 5 seasons and he isn't involved one bit ONE BIT, in the selection process or anything. He vocally berated Haider Ali in 2022 wt20 and a few weeks later, KK had picked him in the Platinum Category.
Every time Wasim is asked about a player KK has picked, he casually says, do your research, google him etc.
When asked about James Fuller last season, he said, 140 pe ball karata hai, batting main jaan marta hai.
When asked about Hardus Viljoen at MS, said 150 pe ball karata hai.
In recent times, every time he is asked about domestic cricketers or any upcoming youngster or even performing guys in domestic, he is totally clueless. When asked about pacers in domestic cricket, a user had to ask him specifically about Khurram Shehzad, he didn't even know of Aamer Jamal who had already debuted over a year ago.
When asked about coaching practice, he was asking Misbah on how throwdowns are done and what the throwing devices do and don't and how they work.

For me, he might well be a great personality to have in the dressing room and get involved, but Wasim simply DOES NOT want to be involved in coaching Pak Cricket team. He is too casual about coaching. If he is asked to get enrolled in a coaching course, he'll probably find it below him or not worth his time.

It's just that Wasim does not want to be there.

My two cents are,

Hire basic bowling, batting, fielding and spin coaches from England, Australia, NZ or SA (even if it's high school cricket coaches), and have them work in the off season with the domestic players since the domestic teams can't or don't want to afford foreign coaches. Once the adjustments and textbook cricket is taught at the start of development, it is much more likely that the graph of majority of the players would go upwards with time rather hiring fancy names for the national team and expecting them to fix the 30 year old players who've played for decades with malfunctioning basics.

He seems more happy with " had a chat with him in the morning" than actual coaching.

" Fear of failure is far worse than actual failure" may be this is the case with Wasim Akram too. I think he wants to keep his legacy intact otherwise I have never seen a great player rejecting the honour of being the coach for his own country.

Even former indian players like Ajay jadeja are craving for this role and then there is like of Mr Wasim Akram

Why would he give up mentor roles, commentary work etc and work for an organisation like the PCB.

He would have seen what happened to Mickey Arthur and taken his cue.

May be what you stated has great nuggets of truth but I hardly doubt Wasim's reaction would have been same if he had got coaching offers from board like ECB or Australian Cricket Board. He states the abusive demeanour from fans as a reason behind his reluctance to join PCB. But had he not faced such criticism during his stint with KK. Don't know what are the actual reservations behind his reluctance.

He's done more than enough for Pakistan cricket. Let someone else step up and do something. Coaching and playing are two very different skill-sets. Not every player is built for coaching. Especially given the constant chaos and clowning surrounding our team.

He has no eye for talent and is a below par bowling coach. If he had any pedigree as a coach then he would have been offered a huge bag by some board instead of random T20 gigs where a bowling coach is nothing more than a glorified cheer leader.

Generally, the most naturally gifted players make poor coaches.

Wasim's stint with Islamabad was not that bad but his tenure with Karachi Kings was a failure. It is not necessary that a greatest of all time player can be a good coach as well. However, Wasim can help the young bowlers who are still learning and can be groomed by him.

Yeah sure, May be Wasim has no great credentials as coach in longer formats but he still has a great knack of hunting talent.

To name a few Mohammad Amir, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Junaid Khan, Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav etc are just some of his talent discoveries. Even Shami's coach has gone so far that he has credited Shami's recent WC 2023 performance to Wasim Akram. "It’s Wasim Akram who made Shami the bowler he is today”

Well IPL was a 2 month gig with big salary. Coaching a national team is 2-3 year long committments. Big difference.

Yep but where there is a will, there is a way. And may be Wasim thinks himself unfit for this role otherwise novices like shaun tait, morne morkel etc have also done coaching in longer formats.

Wasim is honest with his limitations. He knows he can't do the jobs for more than a month or two at a stretch. He is happy to be a mentor than a real technical coach who grinds with the players.

Apart from Mohd Shami, i can't think of any other bowler who has tributted Wasim for his drastic improvement because of his coaching, tips.

OK bro. Then what is this.

Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav believes former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram had a big influence on him during his early career saying it was great being around the Swing of Sultan.

have any of you not seen him at a sports the pavilion.. he loses his mind on most questions asked by pakistani fans.. he has no knowledge nor interest in domestic talent..

Tait and Morkel actively got involved in coaching. I don't think it is Wasim's ambition to go into coaching

He said on the Pavilion show recently, he is happy with his life and doesn’t want the stress from the job. Also he would find it hard to take the ‘disrespect’ that comes from the people with it.

He seems more happy with " had a chat with him in the morning" than actual coaching.
Unlike Waqar he still has his legacy in tact.
Seems so. He is more concerned about his legacy than anything else. But he should take inspirations from the example of Deschamps success with France and Zidane's with Real Madrid. Both were great players and also turned out to be great coaches too. Even average players can become great coaches like Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. So Wasim should venture his luck too. I know it's a different sports example but in the end its all about mentality.

Please name one player that turned out to be a great coach for Pakistan.

The problem isn’t the coach.

Javed Miandad bro. A successful coach for Pakistan won Asia test championship cup, Sharjah Cup 2000 and Pakistan’s first ever Asia Cup too. Also during his coaching tenure Wasim was the captain man.

Good points. I was actually shocked when he was in the comm box during the first test in Perth he said he has not seen much of Aamer Jamal and Khurram Shahzad bowl. But when he saw them, he did make good points about Khurram's action. That he bowls too wide of the crease, etc.

So clearly, he does not have much interest in our younger bolwers. But it would be nice if, once a year, he arranged some bowling camps with them.

He doesn't have much to offer, honestly. He was the head coach of Karachi Kings, and that team performed poorly last season. Additionally, he seems to have temperament issues when dealing with Pakistani players. It's unclear why he never had any coaching issues in the IPL.

While he was undoubtedly a great player, he appears to be lacking in talent-spotting and team coaching abilities. Successful coaching requires specific skills beyond one's cricketing history, which is not a mandatory requirement nowadays

He knows very well that coaching the national team would open the Justice Qayyum pandora box. The media journalists and especially his former mates Aamir Sohail, Ata-ur Rehman, Rashid Latif etc would make his life a hell.
So, it's better for him to stay away from any role in the PCB.

You have stated a real fact.

It could be so. May be he still feels haunted by these revelations if they ever occur.

It's sad that he's staying away from the Pakistan setup but it's totally understandable; too much politics.

Additionally, Wasim Akram has an Australian family whom I doubt would want to move to Pakistan

Yeah it's a pity that politics and his own personal issues keeping him away from contributing big to PCT.

Coaching a desi team is always very stressful. Media and fans can be hard to handle at times.

So, can't blame Wasim for declining this. He is making good money anyway.

So bro, you are suggesting he might would have taken the role if the offer had come from ECB, ACB etc

But can't this mercenary play the role of chief selector for the sake of Pakistan. Because unlike coaching it isn't that much stressful.
If he's offered it he'd reject it...

The man spent his prime coaching years at ICL & IPL and was captain of the overwhelming favourites in CWC final which was the most humiliating one in history.

Man's a chequered character

If he does so History won't be kind to him. Also Pakistan Cricket Board is now actively looking for a bowling coach so would he step forward or keep on regressing and crouching in A sports studio?

Overwhelming favourites, they were not. That's just revisionism coloured by nostalgia.

They absolutely were. They'd hammered everyone bar their hoodoo India and a bizarre loss to Bangladesh. Overwhelming favourites are overrated anyway :rp

I maintain he won't. He's a mercenary. India's bowling revolution can be attributed to him

They had 3 straight losses to Bangladesh, South Africa and India before beating ZIM and NZ while going to the final. Australia on the other hand had won 6 straight matches going into the final including beating SA twice . PAK were the 3rd best side of the competition.

Of course, that thrashing in the final was unexpected but there was no way PAK could be considered favourites going into the final.

Most skillful with doctored balls for sure, but the balls that made his (early) career would not be deemed fit for play today.
Waqar Younis was better than Wasim Akram and was extremely devastating in his early years before his back injury. He was a sight to behold charging in from the boundary with his rhythmic run up and bowling at high pace. Just go and check the bowling averages for all bowlers (not only Wasim) between 1988 and 1994 and then you will be able to understand the impact which he had in those early years.

Almost every batsman rates Wasim as their toughest bowler. They know better than us.
Also, Waqar was more attacking (got bashed many times too) and batsmen were more cautious against Wasim and went to score against Waqar is one of the factors why Waqar ended up with more wickets.

Wasim Akram in an interview discussed the possibility of coaching either Australia or Pakistan, He said:

"If I get the option I will pick Australia. Not because of my wife, it's because there will be less pressure and I will be able to do my job"

Who will you choose Virat Kohli or Babar Azam

" I shall prefer Virat Kohli over Babar Azam as Virat will make his place in History. "

Which league is better PSL or IPL

"I think both leagues are huge. IPL is huge and PSL is a mini IPL in Pakistan"

Fear of failure with PCT or less pressure what ACB. What do you guys think 🤔

No one with even a modicum of sense would go near the coaching gig for Pakistan.
Just for starters …

You work for the PCB who are both corrupt and inept.
When the Government changes, the PCB head changes and you are out of a job
The media berate you at every opportunity
The fans know little about the game and call for changes all the time

It’s why no sensible coach would touch the Pakistan job with the proverbial bargepole …Wasim was just being honest.
As Mickey Arthur demonstrated, it’s preferable coaching a mediocre second division county championship side (Derbyshire) than Pakistan

Before the start of play on day 2, Mark Howard on Fox Cricket had a chat with Starc and Wasim.

Wasim to Starc: "Which side is the shiny side with the new ball? How do you judge?"

Brilliant question Wasim bhai.

Starc: "With the brand new ball, obviously both sides are smooth"

Instead of making fun of himself abroad, he needs to join the PCT in any capacity where he could contribute something really valuable to the team. Because as is apparent from his recent commentatoring stint, it's not the right place for him😉

It's exactly the right place for him. The same mercenary who coached in ICL & IPL

I am sorry to say but Wasim Akram brings nothing but bad name to Pakistan.

I am not even going to comment on match fixing but Wasim Akram choses to react to stupid fans on twitter and then blames the Pakistani culture.

Last thing you want is a coach like him.

Yep Initially I felt he would be a good option but his erratic behavior in recent times has also changed my mind.

Yep this mercenary can coach lowly teams in ICL but he fears coaching Pakistan.Mat be because he has become suspicious of his own abilities after ruining the team of the Karachi Kings.

Yes, he is too harsh when criticizing Pakistan, openly supporting India and being too soft on Indian players. It's because he earns most of his bread and butter from India.

I don't think this is going to happen because we are likely to face a personality clash between him and the PCB chairman. Wasim would want to have most of the power but it is very unlikely that any PCB chairman would let this happen.
