I am writing this in the immediate aftermath of the ODI defeat at Sydney.

A defeat in which Sharjeel Khan top-scored with 74 and in which Hasan Ali took 5 wickets.

But Pakistan was thrashed by over 80 runs because of pathetic fielding. And Hasan Ali dropped Dave Warner on 113 and Glenn Maxwell on 10, while Sharjeel Khan dropped Steve Smith on 10 and Travis Head on 28.

Sooner or later a line has to be drawn in the sand.

And batsmen and bowlers need to know that if they cannot field to an international standard, then they will not be considered for selection until they can.

Steve Rixon has worked incredibly hard to get the fielding up to scratch. But too many of the players don't take it seriously.

So Inzamam and Mickey Arthur need to take a stand now. If you can't field to international standard, then you can't be considered for selection for the ODI squad.

Sharjeel Khan and Hasan Ali need to be made an example of.

You make a good point but these 2 are our best ODI players along with Babar and Amir. Yes it's a matter of principle but Hassan so far has been good in the field in all the games he has played and let's just hope this was an off day

We should have a rule from next series onwards that no matter who the individual is, if they drop 2 catches in a given series, they should be booted for a year. Only way forward.

This should be a warning for Sharjeel and Hasan.

Yes, and they should make way for Salman Butt & Mohammad Asif.

sentimental thread

dropping players is a long standing Pakistani tradition.
Dropping players won't change that, having better first-class coaches will

Like they were the only culprits... Why not throw out the whole team. Unless they're consitently dropping catches like Hafeez was sometime last year, there is no need to throw them out.

But they are not even decent ODI players.

They dropped 4 dolly catches between them yesterday.

No football team will nowadays pick a midfielder who is not defensively competent. They used to, but not any more.

Cricket can't be any different.

How many chances do you think Warner, Smith and Maxwell will give the fielding side? These chances have to be taken.

That's assuming the other players in domestic are top notch fielders. If you start dropping Pakistani players for having a bad day or two in field then you'll be playing musical chairs forever.

If a batsmen who scores 74 off 47 is not decent and a bowler who picks up 5 wickets while rest of bowlers go for 293 runs is not decent and you want to throw them out of the team who ACTUALLY IS DECENT?

Without them Pakistan will go for 400 runs and play out 50 overs for 190-7.

Good for first day of test match right?

Your points pretty much highlight why Pakistan is so bad at ODI cricket nowadays.

The grassless wickets and huge bats mean that what few wickets fall will tend to be to catches in the outfield. If you can't take those catches, you lose.

It's not enough to be able to bat, or bowl, or even bat AND bowl.

It's an absolute prerequisite that each player be able to catch and be able to keep 2's down to 1's.

You can't carry players who can't field any more.

And to me, it's a symptom of the same dysfunction which allows Misbah-ul-Haq to choose the time of his exit. There is this perception in Pakistan that cricketers somehow earn seniority, and then can be carried whether they have glaring cricketing deficits or not.

I'm a lifelong Manchester City supporter. And we are not going to win the EPL this season because our average age is 5 years older than Tottenham's - which is why and how we let slip a 2 goal lead against them 2 days ago.

There is NO place for any concept of seniority in any ball sport. You perform or you're out on your ear.

It's not acceptable to drop catches. Hasan Ali's 2 drops cost 85 runs.

The premise of the thread is spot on.

BUT, it has to become a consistent pattern. Even the greatest players have had shoddy days in the field.

If Hasan Ali or Sharjeel continue to drop catches you have to remove them regardless of performance. It's utterly unacceptable and I agree with that point.

All this is pointless the only real way forward is to improve our first class system. PCB has to introduce fitness and fielding tests at the first class level and club level carried out every month even off season. Players below a certain level of fitness should not be allowed to play first class cricket or club cricket. As all the lazy fielding and fitness habits are learned over period of time and cant be changed in one go if our players have to maintain a certain level of fitness all year round they will come into international cricket fitter and better fielders. It will improve Pakistan over all game as well.

You will struggle to find complete pakistani players, they are good in only 1 departement, maximum 2 if you are lucky.
Every single player should be able to field well. But this has to start from childhood, but when our players are young, they are either batting or bowling in the streets. They only try to focus on fielding at higher level when they are forced to and are seldom good athletes who can adapt quickly.

If we remain lax on fielding and fitness, we will never come out of this mess. It's not a bad idea to set an example by punishing delinquents at top level and try to shape up our culture for good.

OP has a point although he has picked the two best performers of yesterday's game to add some spice. We could have started from axing Sami, Sarfraz(who were the main culprits in tests) or Wahab(who has now become a serial no ball offender) for a match.

Right, wrong, or indifferent: This is a pointless thread.

This is PAKISTAN cricket that we are talking about. Neither Sharjeel nor Hassan will be dropped.

Making an impression by dropping poor fielders in the team is the last thing our team would do, especially because the two you mention actually contributed to their primary roles.

It's time PPers realize their opinions on chopping xyz and doing this change and that don't matter. You have a right to express your opinion, but it is in vain.

Literally more than half the threads on this forum are proposing this and that but people don't realize their proposed changes and thoughts don't matter. Management isn't gonna do what you propose, their skin is thicker and ashier than most.

That doesn't mean that you can't voice your opinions, but don't be adamant about that change happening (it is unlikely).

Fielding is one of the big reason for Pakistan's low ranking in ODI. In old days wickets were more bowling friendly , so they hurt less. On these batting paradises batman will make you pay for giving them extra lives.

But are you sure those replacing them would be good fielders. With Pakistan poor fielding is almost a given.

Unfortunately what you don't understand is that all PP'ers are already aware of this. It's not like we actually think our proposed ideas will be considered or are even heard of, however we bring these ideas forward for our person delight. It's to have good debates and to imagine what the team would be like speaking hypothetically.

The problem is grass root , these guys can't improve now. Improve the domestic structure or we will have same issues.

No instead make them work 100% more on their fielding and make sure they get better in it.

This is quite an extremist mentality where we decide to solve issues of years in a click of button.

Excellent idea ... the apathy and lack of willingness to work hard is chronically embedded in the system, it needs something drastic like this to change mindset.

I would demote people from central contracts who failed to keep up the fitness standards required at this level..... I would remove Umar Akmal from the central contract till he's shown the drive to keep himself fit.

Fitness at top level or any level for that matter is a lifestyle change.

Your points make sense.

However, not when others and replacements are going to be worse or just as bad. As Hasan123 said.

The issues run deep in domestics.

Come on Junaids even by your standards you're taking this a bit too far :)) you seriously want to drop two of our best limited over prospects lol

Tbf as well Hasan and Sharjeel have done okay in the field up until that game. Sharjeel has caught some good slip catches.

Problem is that we don't have any options in-terms of replacing them with a quality opener and right arm bowler. If we got rid of them, we'd be much worse off, dropped catches or not.

Dropped catches aside these two have been our best players with bat and ball displaying enough promise to deserve a long rope when it comes to their elevation at the international level, it is just inconceivable and beyond me on every level why anyone would even entertain the idea of "throwing them out for a year" in their dreams!

Agreed 100%. We need to follow the example set by Australia when they announced that Steve Smith is dropped for all of 2017 after he dropped a couple of catches at the Gabba.

so you would rather select Anwar Ali who is excellent fielder than Hasan Ali who is bad fielder?

Hassan Ali has been a good tool for Pakistan
Not much elevation or bounce but can get the yorkers in at will

I don't blame Sharjeel for his drops. He shouldn't have been fielding in those positions in the first place.

We should have a slip for all 50 overs of the innings just so we can have Sharjeel standing there and not dropping the catches in the outfield.

Also quite brilliant of the kaptaan to place our two fattest cricketers Umar Akmal and Sharjeel Khan at point and backward point, respectively. Mashallah.

Other teams have their best most athletic fielders in that position, but no not us.

Exactly. They've been very promising and one of the few players that seem like they can cope with playing the modern style in ODIS.

Umar is not at his best but still moving well despite being overweight. He's a natural athlete and you don't completely lose that by adding a few pounds. Can't remember Umar misfielding once in this series.

Sharjeel should be behind the keeper at all times. Mind-boggling why they place him at the boundary, deep midwicket and cow corner of all places. Captain fantastic never ceases to surprise.

If someone like Ishant Sharma was playing for Pak, he would be the best catcher in that team. Pakistan are an extremely bad catching team. I am not talking about dropping tough chances. But Pak fielders drop a lot of skiers that hitters like Warner or Maxwell etc give.

I know that Pak fielders will drop the catch most probably the moment the ball goes high in the air.

Sharjeel and Hasan are blocking the return of Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif. :13:

One year is a bit exaggeration, particularly it's not guaranteed in that one year they'll improve (SK might get fatter), also not sure who can replace them (as better fielder), but you are right in one sense - these 2 won't have come in front of Imran for a year. Even if played in same match, they would have used face mask or body double.

Boss, you have seen enough - fielding comes from leadership (not necessarily Captain has to be Johnty, but must be the best trier) - what do you expect from a team whose Captain doesn't have the balls to command even own bowler. Entire 4th ODI, it was MoHa & Amir talking & the bowler (& Azhar) was listening.

yes . then me n u gt a better chance of playing for pakistan

Rather than banning them - what is Rixon actually doing?

We need a specialist fielding coach and hold fielding camps - have to put a lot of emphasis on this...

Exactly, Rixon takes just as much money as the head coach would because of his "experience".

Lol why would you throw out the only two who are actually performing given fair opportunity. Its not like Pakistan is having great athletes waiting to play but for these two.

I have a feeling players are not listening to coaches.

The best possible scenario would be to plan for the short term. Dropping players for players even worse at fielding will not do Pakistan any good. The replacements tend to be even worse. And if you start planning for the long term and try to fix things at grass root level, it will take decades of hard work to have even a formidable fielding side.

However, what Pakistan can do is set a fitness standard. If all players are fit, regardless of being pathetic fielders, they will at least save 15-20 runs by being agile in the field and throwing themselves at the ball. This will not only improve the ground fielding but bowlers will have more pace and batsmen will play longer innings and converts singles into two's and two's into three's.

As for catching, I suppose Pakistan can have one of those intense fielding practice trainings under the military or with international coaches that last a couple of weeks. I would agree, this is a very short term plan however, with dedication and hard work, this task will not be too hard to achieve. There will be some improve, if not a lot. And quite frankly, even a little bit of improvement will be good given how bad things are currently.

Sharjeel is a gem. In fact, he is the only player in the Pak line up who plays in the modern ODI way.

Him and Roy are very similar in their roles in their respective teams. A player like that is like a diamond amongst a sea of rubble in Pakistan where it's very hard to find stroke players but plodders and grafters are abundant. He is worth it to remain in the team despite his fitness or fielding issues. Although he needs to definitely improve on those counts..

In fact, I don't generally like to watch Pakistan bat in ODIs as there aren't many attractive stroke players.

But Sharjeel has made me watch Pakistan bat just to see his innings. He's having the Sehwag effect on Pakistan.
