The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has approached the Peshawar High Court (PHC) filed a petition for a judicial inquiry into the May 9 incidents requesting the Chief Justice of the PHC to form a judicial commission

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Law Minister Aftab Alam has said that he has sent a letter to the Chief Justice of PHC for a judicial commission.

Aftab Alam said that the CJ will announce the names for the Peshawar High Court (PHC) Commission and the head of the Judicial Commission will be the judge of the PHC.

It should be remembered that on June 27, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government approved the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents.

The approval of the commission was given in the provincial cabinet meeting.

According to the decision of the provincial cabinet, the commission will be entrusted with the responsibility of conducting a full investigation of May 9, after the investigation, all the characters involved in the events of May 9, 2023 will be exposed.

On May 9, 2023, after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from the premises of Islamabad High Court in the Al-Qadir Trust case, a nationwide protest was held by the PTI, during which military, civil and private installations were set on fire and severe damage occurred to public and private properties.

PTI to expose culprits of May 9 riots after coming into power, says Barrister Saif

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advisor for Information Barrister Dr. Saif berated the PML-N led incumbent government saying it had nothing to do to stay in limelight except discussing May 9 and PTI founder Imran Khan.

The PTI leader gave a response to Ahsan Iqbal's statements that Imran Khan had to repent for May 9 riots and wouldn’t be granted NRO.

Barrister Saif responded that the fake government must resign and seek apology from PTI for the May 9 fiasco, they discussed May 9 when they didn't find any space in the media.

KP information advisor boasted that the public gave a response on May 9 by giving a mandate to PTI on February 8 with trust.

All PML-N leaders including Ahsan Iqbal had no credibility, sitting in the parliament with the support of Form-47 and election commissioner.

He informed that Imran Khan had stressed for judicial commission on the May 9 incident many times but they hadn’t made yet as a guilty conscience needed no accuser.

He added that the judicial inquiry would reveal what were the real motives behind May 9 riots.

Barrister Saif accused the political opponents for staging May 9 to eliminate PTI but they couldn’t succeed in their nefarious aims instead PTI strengthened more.

The PTI leader insisted on exposing the perpetrators behind the May 9 riots after coming into power.

Heated arguments and exchange of accusations between government and opposition lawmakers were seen in the National Assembly on Tuesday following the arrest of PTI MNAs last night from from Islamabad, including the parliament premises.

On Monday night, a day after the PTI held its Sangjani power show, law enforcement agencies swooped in on the party’s top leadership, whisking away at least three key members from different parts of Islamabad, while forcing others to take shelter in the Parliament House.

In a fiery speech on the floor of the lower house today, PTI’s Ali Muhammad Khan, who appeared emotionally charged, lambasted the arrests of his fellow party leaders.

“Today, I am making a case on democracy,” he said. “Last night, what happened to democracy and to this parliament. We are not in Israel, we are in Pakistan.”

Addressing NA speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khan said: “Your colleagues Sahibzada [Hamid Raza], Shafqat [Awan], Amir Dogar, Shiekh Waqar [Akram] and Maulana Naseem were seeking shelter in this parliament last night [when they were arrested]. Maulana Naseem was picked up from a mosque.

PM blames PTI for damaging Pak-China ties, calls May 9 incident ‘unforgivable sin’​

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has accused the previous Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government of sabotaging Pakistan-China relations and halting the progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He also termed the May 9 incident an "unforgivable sin."

Speaking at a press conference in London on Saturday, Sharif highlighted the dire state of Pakistan's economy when his government took charge, asserting that the country was on the verge of default. He credited Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir for his crucial efforts in securing a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Sharif also demanded an immediate ceasefire in Palestine, condemning the “inhumane atrocities” being committed in Gaza. “As prime minister, I have raised Pakistan’s voice on the global stage,” he said referring to his speech at UN General Assembly last night.

Criticising his predecessors, the prime minister said, “The last government destroyed Pak-China relations and completely halted CPEC.” He added that the economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations are now being restored.

Addressing corruption allegations against him and his son, Shehbaz Sharif stated, “We were accused of corruption, but the British National Crime Agency (NCA) cleared us of all charges.”

The incumbent government revealed on Saturday the solid evidence pertaining to the attack on the military installations during the May 9 vandalism that transpired last year.

Expressing his thoughts during the press conference, Information Minister Atta Tarar said, “The defense and military installations had been attacked like khawarij. Tarar had issued the CCTV footage.

“Murad Saeed, among the leaders, had issued the instructions to the PTI workers to reach the targeted destination. They had the plan to spread bloodshed.”

He said, “The PTI founder and the rest of the party leadership should offer the apology to the nation on the evidence.”

“We are having the demand of wrapping up the cases pertaining to the May 9 vandalism. The masses are now aware of the evidence,” he added.

Tarar took a jibe at the PTI, questioning, “Was there a ghost closed in the bottle responsible for the May 9 riots?”

“The PTI leadership had given the workers’ instructions to indulge in the vandalism by reaching the particular target,” said Tarar.

The minister maintained, “The PTI bigwigs were involved behind the May 9 mayhem.”

He said, “The events that transpired on May 9 happened through the proper planning.”

Military Courts cannot sentence civilians', PTI announces to challenge the verdict​

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has rejected the sentences handed down by military courts to civilians as Party leader Omar Ayub stated that military courts have no jurisdiction to try or sentence civilians.

In a tweet, Omar Ayub condemned the military court verdicts against PTI detainees, terming them a violation of justice.

The leader of the opposition in the National Assembly emphasized that the detainees are ordinary citizens who cannot be tried in military courts, describing such courts sentencing civilians as "kangaroo courts" and arguing that they undermine the principles of justice.

“Military courts are not legitimate judicial partners of the state’s judicial power. Armed forces are part of the state's administrative apparatus, not the judiciary,” Ayub said.

He added that the establishment of such courts violates judicial independence and the constitutional principle of separation of powers, undermining the foundational features of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Former Speaker of the National Assembly and PTI leader Asad Qaiser also denounced the military courts' decisions, calling them a breach of fundamental human rights.

“These trials have failed to meet the standards of justice,” Qaiser remarked while expressing his disappointment with the Supreme Court’s stance on the matter, vowing to continue the struggle for justice.

“Citizens have been deprived of their basic rights. When courts are compromised, public trust erodes, leading to widespread despair. The current judicial system is paralyzed, which is a tragedy for the country,” he added.

Qaiser reaffirmed PTI's commitment to challenging the military courts’ verdicts and seeking justice through peaceful and legal means.

Earlier today, Military courts have sentenced 25 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to 10 years for their role in violent attacks on military installations during nationwide riots in May 2023.

According to the military's media wing(ISPR), the Field General Court Martial has sentenced 25 individuals in the first phase, following a thorough review of evidence and the completion of proper legal procedures.

"The convicted individuals, involved in attacks on key military sites including Jinnah House, the General Headquarters (GHQ), and Pakistan Air Force Base Mianwali, were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment, with 14 receiving 10-year terms and others shorter sentences," the statement said.

In describing the significance of the verdicts, the ISPR referred to the sentences as an “important milestone” in delivering justice to the nation. “It is also a stark reminder to all those who are exploited by the vested interests and fall prey to their political propaganda and intoxicating lies, to never take law in their own hands ever in the future,” the statement concluded.

Barrister Gohar gives govt 7-day ultimatum for judicial commission​

RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar gave 7-day ultimatum to the government to form judicial commission on May 9 incidents.

“We’ll not hold the fourth meeting with the government negotiating team if there is no judicial commission in next seven days,” said the PTI chairman.

Talking to media outside the Adiala Jail on Monday, Gohar said that PTI is adamant on its earlier demands.

He said that PTI really wants to continue negotiations with the government.

Speaking on the occasion, PTI chairman urged PML-N’s Senator Irfan Siddiqui not to disrupt the political dialogue between the government and opposition.

Earlier, Senator Irfan Siddiqui had said that backdoor talks and open dialogue can’t go side by side.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the spokesperson for the government’s negotiation committee said that he is very well aware of details of meeting between PTI’s Barrister Gohar and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir.

He said that both Imran Khan and Aleema Khan have termed the ‘backdoor’ talks with army chief satisfactory.

He urged the PTI to ask its negotiating team to quit the dialogue if their talks are satisfactory with the military leadership.

The PML-N leader said that the PTI was desperately trying to meet the COAS.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui, spokesperson for the government’s negotiation committee, has confirmed that no decision has been made regarding the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26.

Siddiqui made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking to the media after the first round of discussions convened to review Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) demands. The meeting, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, was held in the Speaker’s Chamber.

The session was attended by a host of political heavyweights, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Aleem Khan, Salik Hussain, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, Rana Sanaullah, Dr Farooq Sattar, Ejaz ul Haq, and Khalid Magsi.

During the discussions, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar provided a detailed briefing on each point of the opposition’s charter of demands.

Siddiqui noted that representatives from all seven parties in the committee engaged in comprehensive discussions but clarified that the legal committee had yet to form a conclusive opinion on PTI’s proposals.

The senator announced that deliberations would continue in another session scheduled for Wednesday. He further assured that the fourth round of negotiations would take place after seven working days, in line with the planned timetable.

PTI has maintained a firm position, demanding the formation of a judicial commission as a precondition for continued talks.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - PTI's negotiation committee spokesperson, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, stated that the party would not participate in the fourth round of talks without a formal announcement regarding the establishment of a judicial commission to probe May 9 incidents.

Raza urged the government to formally declare its willingness to establish the judicial commission. “Once the commission is announced, we can hold another meeting to discuss its Terms of Reference (ToRs),” he said.

He further underlined that if the demand is not met, PTI will refrain from participating in the fourth round of negotiations.

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also linked the fourth round of negotiations to the formation of the judicial commission. He stated, “We are bound by the PTI leader’s directives that no negotiations should proceed without the establishment of the judicial commission.”

Meanwhile, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui said a written response would be given to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Jan 28.

Talking to the media in the federal capital, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui said that a decision had not yet been reached on the formation of a judicial commission on the demand of PTI.

He said that a detailed legal opinion has also been sought on the demands of the opposition and a written response would be given on the written demands of PTI on January 28.

Govt was deliberating on committee instead of judicial commission, says Tarar​

ISLAMABAD: Following the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) decision to quit ongoing talks, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar asserted that the government was deliberating on the formation of a committee instead of a judicial commission in light of the former ruling party's demand.

"It is not necessary to constitute a commission...we were deliberating on a middle ground to take things forward," the minister said while speaking on Geo News programme 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath'.

Earlier in the day, incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan "called off" negotiations with the government due to its failure to establish a judicial commission within seven days.

Speaking to the media outside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said that Khan expressed his frustration over the delay, saying that the government's failure to act for the formation of a judicial commission leaves no reason to continue the talks.

"The founder of PTI has categorically announced that no further rounds of negotiations will take place," Gohar said. "The government made announcements but has yet to follow through, which is why Imran Khan decided to end the negotiations."

Negotiations between the PML-N-led government and PTI began in late December to ease political tensions. However, weeks of talks — with three sessions taking place so far — have made little or no progress on key matters.

The Khan-founded party, in its written charter of demands presented to the government during the third session on January 16, had demanded the formation of two judicial commissions — mutually nominated by the PTI and the government within seven days — and the release of "political prisoners".

The former ruling party's demands of two judicial commissions pertained to an inquiry into the May 9, 2023 riots as well the November 26 crackdown on the PTI supporters in Islamabad last year.

Speaking during today's programme, Tarar said that the PTI's decision to quit talks was based on "malicious intent and made in haste".

"Our response to PTI's demands was to come," he said, adding that "extensive discussions" were held regarding the charter of demands.

Castigating the former ruling party, the minister said that they should have found "a legitimate excuse" to prove they had been victimised. "PTI was bound to wait for the government's reply till the deadline, now the onus is on the party," he added.

SC directs completion of May 9 events trial within four months​

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Supreme Court heard appeals for the cancellation of bails granted to suspects involved in the May 9 incidents.

Concluding the proceedings, the court disposed of the Punjab government's appeals with a directive to complete all related trials within four months.

During the hearing, lawyer Sameer Khosa noted that in one case involving Khadija Shah, the court had issued similar orders. He added that Shah is facing three additional cases.

Chief Justice of Pakistan remarked that all legal rights of the accused, including Khadija Shah, will be ensured. He assured that the court’s written order would include clarity on this matter.

Khosa also pointed out that although statements of several witnesses have been recorded, copies of the formal charges have yet to be provided. He urged that the independence of trial courts must be upheld. He also mentioned that an ATC judge from Sargodha had written to the High Court about these issues.

The Chief Justice responded by stating that concerns regarding ATC independence have already been addressed in a previous ruling and emphasised that all accused will be provided with charge sheets and necessary documents.

Govt says Punjab Assembly opposition leader’s 10-year sentence in May 9 riots case according to law​

The federal government on Tuesday welcomed a Sargodha Anti-Terrorism Court’s (ATC) sentencing of Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly (PA) Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar to 10 years in prison over a case related to the nationwide riots on May 9, 2023, hailing it as a positive step.

On May 9, 2023, military installations and state-owned buildings were vandalised as PTI supporters protested the arrest of ex-premier Imran Khan — who was released later but has been imprisoned in various cases since August 2023. Following the riots, thousands of protesters, including the party’s top leadership, were arrested.

Addressing a press conference today in Islamabad, Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik said: “Today, the Sargodha ATC issued an order and we welcome it … I think it is a very positive step as justice has been upheld.”

He said the verdict “fulfils all requirements of justice” and followed due process since the entire trial proceedings were carried out legally. “The decision announced is in accordance with the law and the Constitution,” Malik said.

The state minister said Bhachar, PTI MNA Ahmed Chattha and former MNA Bilal Ejaz were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment each in a case related to the riots.

“When you take the law into your own hand, whether you’re an MNA or MPA or opposition leader … the [status] doesn’t matter, as the law is equal for everyone and will come into force.”

Malik hoped that other May 9-related cases would be decided soon as well.

Assailing the PTI, he alleged that the riots were “carefully curated” via “planning” to precisely attack over 200 locations.

Meanwhile, Bachar said in a post on X that he would not abandon his support of Imran.

PTI MNA Asad Qaiser condemned the sentences, alleging that “neither was any transparent or legal procedure followed in the case, nor was any credible witness presented. The demands of justice were grossly violated.”

He said in a post on X that the party would challenge the “biased decision” in the high court.

Terming the decision “outright injustice”, the party’s South Punjab wing said, “The truth is that the establishment’s role in this entire process is evident to all, and nothing called justice remains.

“These punishments are not only vengeful actions but also an insult to the country’s democracy, judiciary, and people, and now the people will no longer stay silent!” the statement read.

PTI MNA and lawyer Shafqat Awan also condemned the decision. “I have never seen a more horrific and brutal decision than the one given by the Sargodha ATC judge,” he told reporters.

Punjab Assembly PTI MPAs restored

Today’s conviction follows a recent tussle between the PML-N’s Punjab government and the PTI, after PA Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan suspended 26 opposition MPAs and sought their disqualification for their “unparliamentary conduct”.

However, days ago, in a significant step towards de-escalation of political tensions, Ahmad formally rejected the disqualification petitions following negotiations between the government and the opposition.

A notification by the assembly secretariat today said the 26 PTI lawmakers stood restored as MPAs.

The notification, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, said that the earlier order to suspend the provincial assembly members was withdrawn. The order listed the names of the 26 PTI MPAs.
