Why was Saeed Anwar poor in away ODIs?

He is hailed as an ATG ODI opener but he averages 30 away from home and his record in Australia and South Africa (probably two best pace attacks of his era) and New Zealand is tailender like.

But the surprising part is that he has done very well in these countries in tests which shows that it wasn't a case of him being technically poor

Those who watched his entire career what was the reason for his flat track bullying in ODI's when he has proved himself in tough conditions in tests?

Has his poor away record killed his chances of becoming an ODI ATG?

Based on the stats (which rarely provide context!) I feel it might have had to do with two factors.

1) He Couldn't Settle (Far Too Many Scores Under 20)
2) Over-Attacking Earlier In His Career

Both might be linked to each other!

If you analyze his earlier AWAY innings, he was over-attacking. He had countless innings with the SR sitting above 100, which was incredibly overzealous during his era.

As you go to his latter AWAY innings, you can tell he started to adjust (sometime after 1998). The SR came down but now he was overcompensating (SR near or below 50!).

Seems like someone who never figured out what a good AWAY innings was in ODIs.

Once again, I might be entirely wrong as I haven't accounted for context (i.e. injuries, personal issues, regularity of getting selected, chemistry with opening partners).

First time hearing that.

Maybe you mean Pakistani great. Don't think he is an ATG in anything, have never heard anyone saying he is one either.

Definitely had the talent to become one though..

Anwar is a Pakistani great but definitely not an ATG. One must remember that Anwar had the toughest job in the world. Opening the batting for a weak batting lineup in all formats against several ATG fast bowlers is not easy.
