KARACHI: Spin guru Saeed Ajmal has pinpointed his dismissal of South Africa stalwart Jacques Kallis in the 2009 World T20 semi-final as the best memory of his cricketing career, which came to an end earlier this week when he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Ajmal, who plans on grooming new spin talent and helping those with problematic bowling actions in his post-playing career, relived his wicket of the Proteas all-rounder in an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune.

“The match was at a point where the South African team had the upper hand and Kallis was hitting the ball everywhere,” he recalled. “At that time when I took his wicket it was the best moment for me. It was so crucial it almost felt like we had won the World Cup. That was a proud moment for me and I was lucky to be a part of that team … easily one of my best memories.”

Ajmal feels that particular wicket and the subsequent tournament triumph brought him fame and fortune he had never expected.

“That not only boosted my career but also helped me financially as my name became a permanent part of Pakistan cricket’s folklore for being a part of that victorious team,” he said.

But after that highest of highs came the lowest of lows when a year later, and at a similar juncture, Ajmal was held largely responsible when Pakistan lost to Australia at the death courtesy some clutch hitting by Australia’s Mike Hussey.

“In the semi-final against Australia in 2010 Michael Hussey struck three sixes and a four in my final over,” said a still reeling Ajmal. “That was really disappointing for me, even more so because after I came back to Pakistan everyone used to taunt me by saying ‘Hussey Hussey’. Even my parents were shocked that that one match ruined all that I had done for my country and the fans were making fun of me. It was a scar on my career.”

That remains the sole cricketing memory he would want to erase if given a chance.

“After that incredible memory in the 2009 semi-final, the disappointment of the next edition made me feel really sad,” he said. “I wish I could change it.”

But he didn’t let that rare setback of 2010 derail his career, emerging as ODI’s top-ranked bowler the next year and holding that position for two more years until the infamous problem with his bowling action brought an abrupt halt to his career.

“I was at the top, I was ruling the bowling charts for three straight years and suddenly the news came,” he said. “It was like everything had finished for me. I couldn’t think what to do, my mind froze.”

Ajmal wanted to play in the 2015 World Cup but says PCB had given up on him even though he felt there was still cricket left in him.

“I prepared for the World Cup 2015 and was fully fit. I wanted to win some more for Pakistan,” he said. “But the ban ruined everything. Still, if PCB had made efforts I would have come back but unfortunately by then I had been banned.”

Poor Ajmal had no idea that Hussey game was a small blip in the bigger storm later!

Yes I remember that wicket - he came down the track and tried to lift Ajmal straight down the ground for 6 but top edged it.

Malik came running from long on and took a high pressure catch :)

That’s 2010 world t20 and apparently Ajmal is talking about 2009 world t20 which we went on to win ..

Yes Kallis was the only man standing between Pakistan and victory in the semi of the 2009 T20 WC and Ajju as usual dismissed the dangerman.

Slap on face of Sachinistas who yesterday were saying that that incident was highlight of Ajmal's career.

Malik didn't run from long-on, he only took a few steps to his left. A great pressure catch though, and Kallis was unlucky because he had almost middled it. Huge moment in the game, he was carrying SA under pressure with de Villiers choking as usual.

The roar from the crowd as Malik took that catch was amazing. Gives you goosebumps even if you watch it back now. Great stuff.

Ajmal is a chucker and that will always overshadow all his achievements.

Lately he seems to be in the news a lot. Did he retire?

Apart from Pakistani fans and hardcore cricket fans no one will remember him for anything.. Ultimately only players who are remembered forever by the masses are people like Bradman, Viv, IK, Sachin, Wasim, Ponting etc.. Players like Ajmal will be forgotten by the causal viewers soon..

Pretty much, and now Pakistani fans think we owe him :)) you don't see anyone else ranking, rating, and appreciating people like Lance Armstrong, or anyone else that cheats.

Ajmal cheated willingly, he lied about his action, so no excuses justifies what he did, even if ICC was to blame for being spineless it doesn't mean us fans have to be as well, all it does is support more chuckers coming through our system

I was there to witness that wicket, oh my god that atmosphere was so special. After we won that game had no doubt we'd win the final, that roar when Malik I believe held on to his catch still gives me goosbumps feels like yesterday

That was more Malik than Ajmal, Malik took a high pressure catch on the boundary.

The catch that lit a lot of fire under Indian behinds and fake Pakistani supporters. Ajmal was clutch during that time. His action became worse around 2014 onwards. Before that his action was perfectly fine and anyone who denies that is just a blind hater.

Yeah Ajmal just ran up and bowl hit me bowl right?

That ball was very close to being a six, Malik took a great catch on the boundary, Ajmal didn't do anything extraordinary there.

It can hardly be called a great catch... sure it was high pressure but he hardly had to move a few inches and it came straight to him. I do not know what your definition of great catch is but it was a regulation catch on the boundary, and it was Ajmal's guile that out-foxed a set ATG batsman like Kallis who mis-timed it and was caught on the boundary. Perhaps you need to go watch the highlights.

Kallis played a Misbah-like innings that day. He would have ended up with a strike rate of less than 100 had Younis not bowled Fawad in the sixteenth over. With only three overs left, required run rate approaching twelve and batsmen struggling to time the ball, a wicket was always forthcoming.

I'm surprised it isn't the England 2012 whitewash.

I watched the highlight again and you are right - Malik did not have to move much but, as you said, it was a high pressure catch.

Also Kallis did not go out of his crease to hit as I originally thought - he in fact slogged it by standing still outside the off stump and hence could not get enough power on it.
