Will Hashim Amla finally turn things around in ICC tournaments this time?

Amla has another great chance to silence his haters on the flat pitches of India. However, as has been the case previously, irrespective of conditions, Amla hasn't been able to muster up the confidence to perform in pressure situations. Some critics have also labelled him as a mentally weak cricketer who racks up meaningless numbers in useless bilaterals. This is very unfortunate for a player of his class.I hope he scores heavily this time but am afraid he'll score only against Afghanistan and CHOKE again vs the stronger teams.

Kohli does well in World T20 2014 = Meh, no one cares about T20s.

Amla does well in World T20 2016 = what a great batsman, he proved that he can perform under pressure.

:srini :amla

Mamoon mashallah Amla has proved you wrong for once.Classy half century @200+.I hope he scores a century and SA win too :amla

Same old story - few things in life never change.

Bows out of another tournament without making an impact.

Got a lucky break vs England (dropped catch on 7), but his innings proved to be a futile one because he was overshadowed by Root and Roy.

Failed vs Afghanistan and got run out vs WI. His fans will say he got unlucky vs WI, but then again, he got lucky vs England and we all know that even if he wouldn't have been run out, he would still have found a way of getting out cheaply vs the WI, because he is incapable of playing under pressure.

All of this when he had his T20 mode on, and came into this tournament scoring 97* and 69* vs Australia and England in his last two T20 Internationals.

Anyone still needs further proof that he is the biggest bottler in Limited Overs cricket ever and the worst player under pressure?

:amla

In addition, now that the tournament is over and all the expectations are off, it won't be surprising to see him bat with his customary class in the dead rubber vs Sri Lanka on Monday.

Btw does anyone thing this is the last world cup for Amla .

I really can't see him playing in 2019 so probably the tag will remain forever

Surely his last World T20, but he has a good chance of playing in the 2019 World Cup I think. Will definitely play in the Champions Trophy next year.

He has been jinxed I think.

Just like we cannot beat India in World Cup, similarly, he cannot score in a World Cup either regardless of his form.

It's amazing how SA with all these talented proven performers manage to make so little impact in tourneys.

Even in his dreams, he cannot play the type of clutch innings Kohli played vs Pakistan in this World T20.

he played a very good innings against Eng in an WT20 Opener. don't say he's lucky, feasted on garbage bowling etc etc. He's not good as Kohli but he's really an important player for SA for setting up a total. SA collapsed badly when he's out early against WI.

Unfortunately he will never perform in ICC tournaments. T20s was never really his game so not surprised to see him struggle in this WC. And he is in a decline so I don't expect him to perform in the champions trophy next year or in the world cup in 2019. It's a shame but he still has had a great career.

I think it's better for SA to go the ENG way . Build a limited overs team from ground up using LOI specialists. Instead of trying to adapt their test team to other formats .

Is there a real reason or is it a jinx only ?

Yeah there is a real reason, just like few people have exam anxiety even though they are fine doing homework and then they flop, while you have others who don't think about it too much and do fine on exams.

He can't rise to the occasion. I used to think this aspect of him choking in big tournaments was overstated, but it has been proved this time again. He was in sublime t20 form heading into the tournament, but couldn't deliver the goods.

Same with ABCD.

Only clutch player is Quinton, future SAF superstar. Future rests on his shoulders to defeat villains like Kohli in LOI run making.

Won't be surprised if the SL game is his last T20I.

Him and de Villiers will have one final shot in the 2019 WC you would think.

He is not even amongst the Top 25 openers of all time but his fans say "he is arguably the 2nd best" lol. What a choker.Should retire from ODIs and T20s immediately.

Guys Suleiman Sandeep and others.

Please do not spread this "Bhai" nonsense on the forum. Call the players with their actual names.

Its amazing how arguably the two of the ATG's of the current batting crop in world cricket (Amla and ABD) couldnt win SA 1 major tourney from 2006 till date. (Thats 3 Champions trophy, 6 T20 WCs and 3 50 overs WC).

Amazingly pathetic for a team like South Africa.

And an ATG bowler( Steyn) too.

The lack of any tournament success from such a talented side will surely hamper the confidence of their future teams . You can already sense the desperation in many of the SA forums.

Kohli struggled against Amir.

He didn't struggle in the WT20. In the Asia Cup, Amir bowled a couple of good deliveries to him but Kohli didn't throw his wicket away. He absorbed the pressure and took his team home.

In a similar situation in ODIs and T20s, Amla throws his wicket away 9/10 times.

Bows out of the tournament with an average of 40 and strike rate of 135.

Haters will say he failed.

The game against West Indies he had to perform nd he didn't no worries he is still better human being than kohli which makes him a better batsman:amla :amla :amla. Kohli has proven he streets ahead of amla

Take a bow.

What an innings in a pressure match!!!!

He was the only one who could make this happen as RSA beat the '96 world champions.

Time for Hashim Amla to redeem himself in ICC tournaments

Big game. Big player. Big performance needed!

So far he's lacking a bit in contributions when it comes to ICC games against the top sides.

The final thing left in his armory of batting greatness - can he push South Africa over the line? :amla

I think this mist be Amla's slowest ODI start.

definitely nervous

He struggles when he gets off to slow. The Indians supporters noise gives their bowlers an extra yard of pace. The Indians will win!

South Africa's top scorer in this tournament, with one match-winning century and an average of 50+. This follows a very good T20 WC last time around. Time people move on from threads like these.

:))) :))) oh this is good, the amla choke was worth it just for this

Wow seriously dude?

one very good innings followed by 2 mediocre ones. Today was virtually a QF for SA and they bottled it surprise surprise Amla not covering himself in glory at all.

WC 2019 is his last chance to do something in a knockout game.

The greatest choker of the modern era.

Did anyone really expect anything else from him? Amla is rated more highly on this forum by some people for whatever reason than he is by actual SA fans. Very good test batsman, and a great odi batsman when the stakes are low.

People will bash ne for saying this

But

Amla <<<<<<<<<<. Dhawan

When it xomes to icc matches and matches where in score matters (knockouts)

Fastest to x thousand runs though...

One of the finest batsmen of this era but sadly cannot seem to shake his icc even ghosts. Hipefully 2019 he comes good

Some respite for Amla though: he has "finally" managed to score a hundred against a Test nation in an ICC tournament.

Give me Gibbs over Amla any day, Amla can continue to score 1000 runs per match when it doesn't matter
Gibbs and Kirsten - Gibbs attacking with Kirsten accumulating were an integral part of the SA team in the late 90s. Gibbs and Smith also good.
