Will Indian fans be happy if Afghanistan defeat India in a group-stage or knockout match of an ICC event?

Indian fans have always shown a lot of support for Afghanistan. I also appreciate how far they've come as a cricketing nation. Their performances in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been superb. But here's the big question—if Afghanistan makes it to the semis or even the final and ends up beating India, will Indian fans take it in stride? Or even if Afghanistan beats India in a group-stage match in any ICC event?

Take the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024 for example—Afghanistan A knocked out India A in the semis with a 20-run win.

Indians are weird.

On one hand, they constantly take a dig at Islam and Muslims. On the other hand, they support Afghanistan. :yk

What is the source of this support? I think it is due to hostile relation between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Enemy of my enemy is my friend?

Their behavior also has a lot to do with it, very different from how Bangladeshi fans and players behave.

Forget about it as they ain't reaching semi's, end of story

I'm sure it will be far more tolerable than the insufferable Bangladeshis beating us in 2007.

Hopefully India will lose in semi-final so that we can enjoy a civilized and relaxing final (free from Indian obnoxiousness). :inti

don't see it happening Afghanistan vs India is a friendly game can't see Afghanistan do the ghustaki of beating india

At least for Bangladesh to be terrible across the millennia, there's no need for anybody to hope for anything. It happens on its own.

Even if Afghanistan wins today, they're likely to play New Zealand not India.

Who supports afghans? I don’t like them at all. All this so called support is just to keep certain countries in check. That’s about it. No one gives a crap about afghans in india

I will.

Matter of fact I want Afghanistan to beat India or anyone to beat India.

Can't stand Rohit Korma and Chicken Kohli...

Why don't we accept it? why doesn't any team accept defeat after losing?
I don't understand the purpose of this thread. :D

I've noticed for a long time that Indian fans show support for Afghanistan, which is fair—Afghanistan is a really good team, and I appreciate that. The way they are showing intent and effort in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is commendable. But if they qualify for the semi-final or final and go on to beat India, will Indian fans be able to tolerate it?

What do you mean tolerate it?

What is their to accept or not accept? Afghanistan is a decent LoI team, second best in Asia and if they have a good day they can defeat India.

Some Pakistani posters are really not happy with the way Afghanistan is progressing in this tournament.
They are just waiting for the Afghanistan vs India match to make fun of them. Lol.

If any team beats us, it becomes an established fact.

Who am I to accept or not accept a fact?

So Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh or Timbuktu, if we lose, anyone who doesn’t accept it is delusional or a fool.

India is a very diverse country and your grouping all Indians as islamophobics is inherently wrong - there is a lot of freedom of press so everything is magnified and comes out - sensationalizing every news is a norm. It’s about relationships between countries, not about religion.

Mate, if Afghanistan makes it to the semi finals or finals of any ICC tournament, not only will I accept them beating us, I will be actively rooting for them.

You have to understand that rooting for the underdog, the risen from the ashes, the forgotten one, the one everyone discounted… that is central to the ethos of most human beings.

At some point it is not about jingoism or nationality, it is about humanity. This is applies to Afghanistan, Nepal, and Bhutan if it ever begins to play cricket. This is not some paternalism, it’s just wanting hard work to be rewarded.

An average Bangladeshi is actually a lot less arrogant compared to our players.
To be honest some Bangladeshi cricketers and maybe 1-2 trolls on this forum have given people that impression maybe. The few Bangladeshis I have actually come across in real life seem humble, sweet and hard working.

Any response to this gets deleted and thats OK. Atleast if the mods can let us know that it will be deleted, will appreciate it.

Speak for yourself. I care about Afghanistan, Nepal and Bhutan. I even have a soft spot for the Maldives.

:kp

I second that - I have so many Bangladeshi friends that are such great people. People should not let the existence of certain certified haters and trolls on this forum to define the whole country and this goes for all nationalities.

How can someone not accept defeats? Please do let me know asking for a friend :yk
Oh we have been guilty of that many times in the past with burning stadiums and stoning players’ houses. It’s unbelievable. People don’t take the game as a game. But I would like to think we are getting better in our behavior and don’t react violently to defeats anymore, more or less at least in the last 20 years. Hope we can continue that.

Well I don’t care about them.

They will show true colours once they get a bit of power. Better than Bangladeshi’s though

In this tournament, Afghanistan beat England and didn't lose to Australia. ;)

Meanwhile Pakistan didn't lose to Bangladesh.

Afghanistan is a lower ranked team than India

India is my team

So I would not be happy about it.

However I get your question, if Afghanistan would beat India and qualify for finals than I would be definitely be cheering for Afghanistan. What a story. What’s not to like about their team. Add India’s contribution to their growth- double happiness.

Hope that summarizes for OP.

Why would any Indian fan be happy about a defeat, regardless of the opposition? If they do beat India, well played!

Australia secured a spot in the Champions Trophy semi-finals at Afghanistan's expense after their match in Lahore was abandoned due to heavy rain.

Afghanistan posted a competitive but not overly threatening total of 273 on a batter-friendly surface at the Gaddafi Stadium, thanks to a composed 85 from Sediqullah Atal. His 95-ball knock featured three sixes and six fours, while Azmatullah Omarzai added a quickfire 67 off 63 balls, striking five sixes.

Among Australia's bowlers, Ben Dwarshuis stood out with figures of 3-47, while left-arm seamer Spencer Johnson and leg-spinner Adam Zampa claimed two wickets each.

Aware of the weather forecast and potential adjustments under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, Australia began their chase aggressively. Opener Travis Head had an early stroke of luck when Rashid Khan dropped him off Fazalhaq Farooqi in the fourth over while he was on six. He capitalized immediately, smashing the next delivery for a six.

Head raced to 59 off 40 balls, and with Australia needing 165 runs from 37.1 overs, he and Steve Smith looked in control before a heavy downpour rendered the outfield unplayable.

With this result, Australia now have four points and will top Group B if England defeat South Africa in Karachi on Saturday.

Afghanistan still have a slim mathematical chance of qualifying, but they would need England to register a massive win to surpass South Africa’s net run rate.

If South Africa win or their match is washed out, they will advance as group winners, with Australia progressing as runners-up.

Both semi-finals and the final have reserve days in case of weather disruptions.

Afghanistan is second favorite team for people of Bharat. We share a bond of friendship and brotherhood with Afghans from millenniums. Every Pathan is sworn brother to Sanatani sisters and every Sanatani is sworn brother to Afghan sisters. If they defeat us, we will be happy for them and we will celebrate with them. Afghans live in our hearts.

Pure Mohammadans and Pure Sanatanis are the best of friends

My and my brothers @thelandofthebravepeople @Asif321 dancing to Afghan jalebi when that day comes

because it is a game, not war. some of us are fans of humanity and the sport before identifying as indian
War??? Teams play to win a game not try to lose “for humanity” as if the world becomes more humane if India loses to Afghanistan or anyone else. By your assessment PCT and the English are the biggest ambassadors of humanity these days. 🤣
