Australia-South Africa meetup in Champions Trophy abandoned due to inclement weather

Incessant weather ensured that the game was abandoned without even a ball being bowled in Rawalpindi.

The exciting contest was called off, with both sides sharing a point because of a no-result. With this, South Africa stay atop the Group B with three points at a NRR of +2.140, while Australia are second with +0.475.

The last time these two sides met in an ODI at an ICC event, they played out an absolute nail-biter where the Australians overcame South Africa by a close margin in the semi-final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

Despite changed personnel, especially for Australia who are missing several of their first-choice players in the squad, their latest meeting in the subcontinent promises to be equally engaging.

South Africa overcame the Afghan threat with aplomb, unleashing a total performance that saw them secure a 107-run win. On the other hand, Australia fell back in their first innings against England, wherein Ben Duckett (165) unleashed his batting prowess and helped England to a record-high Champions Trophy total of 351/8.

However, what followed was a sensational comeback, as Josh Inglis & co. chased down the target with 15 balls to spare.

With both teams off to winning starts, theyโ€™ll look to strengthen their claims for a final-four spot with a win today.

Australia 'more at ease' according to Dale Steyn as match against South Africa adandoned

Australia's clash with South Africa in the Champions Trophy has been abandoned after consistent rain hit Rawalpindi.

The umpires had until 7.30pm on Tuesday (12.30am Wednesday AEDT) to make the call with the chance of 20 overs each being played, but the decision was made a little more than two hours before that.

"In consultation with the groundsmen, the umpires have had a chat, the radar also looks horrendous, it's going to continue to rain for an hour or two and the decision has been taken that this match is abandoned," South African legend Shaun Pollock said on Amazon Prime's coverage.

"Very sad for the competition, it would've been a wonderful encounter."

Both teams came into the match having won their opening encounters and will secure one point from the washout.

The top two teams will progress to the semi-finals with England and Afghanistan the other sides in Group B. Australia defeated England while South Africa won against Afghanistan.

Dale Steyn believes Australia will be more pleased with the outcome.

"Does it fancy someone? I'm not too sure," he said.

"South Africa will obviously have to win their next game, I'm sure Australia would probably be more at ease having to play against Afghanistan.

"South Africa's got a big game against England. It just opens up this group a little more now, one or two wins from Afghanistan could really throw a cat amongst the pigeons."

Afghanistan plays England on February 26 before taking on Australia two days later.

See this is why ct and t20(new format) is a joke. Without round Robin formats, you can't possibly have a proper tournament. Aus and sa literally just gained free entry points.

And with another washout on the cards, it pretty much confirms aus a spot.

2022 was the exact same. Sa got done dirty on multiple occasions due to rain.

When it comes to world cups, teams face each other once in 9 games, the chances of washouts while present, don't affect your chances too much, it's highly unlikely that all 9 of your games will wash out.

While in t20 and ct, typically 3 games are played before you get access to Semi's and the chances of a washout and luck induced spot is 100x higher.

2024 was no different then 2022. The only difference is they added a pointless group stage before super 8's to allow minnow matches and dil khush karnei walei matches. All results went exactly as predicted except for pak and NZ because NZ players were out of practise and Pakistan is Pakistan.

It's a shame weather intervened. Otherwise we would have gotten a fantastic high-scoring game infront of a packed, sell-out crowd.

I think South Africa would be the happier side. They got away with 1 point.

This means SA-England is possibly a knockout game. Australia just have to beat Afghanistan to go through.

It doesn't rain for 3 months & when there's a match, non stop downpour for a day straight.

Sometimes I feel that the entire universe is just out there to tell us humans that we are absolutely inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

Australia is happy otherwise it would have been humiliation loss against South Africa

We have been deprived of what could have been one of the best matches of the tournament against teams that might still end up playing each other in the final. Could have been a nice show down before that.

Anyway one interesting thing this has done is that itโ€™s opened all possibilities in this group.

I think the SA vs England match this Saturday is going to be a blockbuster. It's very important for both teams.

We have started losing overs now.

Remember a shorter game goes in Australiaโ€™s favour mas they can continue slogging
