South Africa (187/6 & 23/0) edge Afghanistan (187 & 19/2) in double Super-Over thriller to win match 13 of ICC T20 World Cup 2026

It’s easy for fans to say they should have done this or that, but people forget these guys come from broken country. They have 0 resources, they grew up in a war torn country in fear.
They are competing with an established team with one of the best school systems in cricket.
Even by competing they are over achieving.
Unless you are a women living there. Then you are not given any chance to achieve anything, let alone over achieving.

Yes, but whatever this bunch of guys achieve in cricket is an over achievement, which is a fact. These guys all grew up when their homes were being bombarded every day, they probably lost family and friends and to be competing with big boys is still a huge achievement.

The next generation which grows up in a more stable environment will have expectations this one is over achieving just by being alive.
Rashid is captain of atleast two big franchisee teams. THey have gone several leagues above. Problem is in T20 you need certain ingreidents which they miss. They rely on perfect games. IN ODIs they are far better.

Jonathan Trott made some big tactical blunders throughout this campaign. In Chennai he didn't play Noor Ahmed eventhough Noor took 24 wickets for CSK last season. Today there were a couple of MASSIVE tactical blunders and they definitely cost Afghanistan the game

Maybe its good that his stint is coming to an end after this tournament
Well he is a south african lol

Coach and captian is why they lost, weird strategies by them, sending Nabi, Rashid not bowling even one of the super overs.
Rashid should lead from front. He should have bowled and also batted with Gurbaz as Rashid is a good hitter. But maybe he can't handle preassure.

You are not understanding the point I am making, the point is your statement “they have gone several leagues above” in itself is a huge achievement for a bunch of players who grew up in an environment they did.

It’s not about this particular match, it’s about everything they have achieved so far it’s actually commendable.

Afghan messed up their last over of the 20 overs, can’t believe they went for another run with balls to spare. Common sense went out the window.

The best game of the tournament so far

Hindsight is 20/20 but had Gurbaz started the second super over instead of Nabi, Afghanistan might have won it despite the odds

It was touch and go

South Africa choked massively. ANy other big teams would have taken advantage of it. But Afghanistan refused to take it. Noor was gutted when Faisal was strolling instead of dashing for 2nd run.

Ok then maybe actually attend the series Pakistan is offering them if they want to get better?

Waise, I expect 10-15 years from now, there will be no such thing as minnows in T20 cricket. It will be like football where ever team will be competitive. This WT20 is just the beginning and the gap is narrowing down. Good for cricket world.
Except Zimb in top 10 , rest below 5 can compete with top 4 or 5

Have you forgotten how their fans act against us and the politics they did for the tri series?
I am not serious brother, calm down :) They are more or less out of the tournament, ab ayashi karain woh lol

Sad day for Afghanistan India

Rashid khan will still be richer than entire pakistan team lol THey will be happy.

Afghan cricketers were welcomed in Pakistan many many years ago. They learnt the game from Pakistani players and teams. People painting a picture that doesnt apply to many Afghan players. True, the country has seen strife, but so has Pakistan and Pakistan has seen more loss in terms of cricket isolation etc, at least the afghans get to play in all the leagues.

Pakistan nurtured Afghan cricket in the initial stages and gave their players a platform to learn and improve..

Has to be amongst top 5 of all time T20 matches.

Both teams tried their hardest to lose from winning positions. Those no balls from Rabada, If fazalHaq had dived...If Gurbaaz had hit it slightly wider..why the fridge did they send Nabi uncle who surely now should be retiring...any way glorious uncertaninties and big If's...
but
Wottamatch! Gurbaaz - you rock maan - my fav- dude is a diamond both on and off the field. Will never forget his gesture of placing currency notes next to poor people sleeping on the roads in Ahmedabad, Diwali Day 2023 - so that those poor guys would have a better Diwali ....A true Champ!

Arguably the greatest T20I game of all time and i totally missed it. What a shame!

Absolutely mental stuff.

Gotta suck losing a game like this bro. But i guess South Africa deserve some of these close ones having had their hearts broken too many times in the past.

Proteas edge Afghanistan after two super overs

Men's T20 World Cup, Group D, Ahmedabad

South Africa 187-6 (20 overs): Rickelton 61 (28); Azmatullah 3-41

Afghanistan 187 (19.4 overs): Rahmanullah 84 (42); Ngidi 3-26

South Africa won after second super over

South Africa and Afghanistan played out one of the most memorable matches in T20 World Cup history with the Proteas edging past their opponents after two super overs in Ahmedabad.

After the first super over was tied, David Miller's 16 from four balls helped South Africa post 23-0 in the second one before Afghanistan fell four runs short in a remarkable game, which was decided by the finest of margins.

South Africa posted 187‑6 after half-centuries from Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton but Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 84 from 42 and cameos from Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan, who added 22 and 20, kept a resolute Afghanistan in the chase.

Needing 13 runs from the final over with one wicket in hand, the Afghans were handed a lifeline through two no‑balls from Kagiso Rabada.

However, with two required from three balls, Fazalhaq Farooqi was run out looking to scamper a second, forcing the match to go to a super over.

There was no winner after the first super over as South Africa matched Afghanistan's 17-run effort, despite losing Dewald Brevis, but they came out on top in the second attempt.

It is the third time a men's T20 international has required multiple super overs to be settled after India beat Afghanistan following two super overs in January 2024, while Netherlands beat Nepal after three super overs in June last year.

This was a repeat of the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final where the Proteas came out on top, but this time Afghanistan offered them a far sterner test than in Trinidad, where they were bundled out for 56.

After being sent in to bat by Afghanistan captain Rashid, South Africa opener De Kock reached his fifty in 34 balls, while Rickelton got his half-century in just 23 deliveries.

Rashid then removed De Kock for 59 off 41 and Rickelton for 61 off 28 in the same over, but only after the pair had put on a 114‑run second‑wicket stand to guide them to a competitive total.

Chasing 188 to win, Afghanistan raced to 50-0 in four overs before Lungi Ngidi halted their momentum with the wickets of Ibrahim Zadran and Gulbadin Naib in the fifth over.

Despite the setback, Rahmanullah kept the Afghans firmly in the contest, powering to a half-century in 26 balls and, by the time he departed, they needed only 67 from 45 deliveries.

Noor Ahmad's nine-ball 15 then took the game to the tie-breaker, where Azmatullah's hitting carried Afghanistan to 17-0, only for Tristan Stubbs to clear the rope in the final ball of South Africa's first super over to tie the match again.

It was then South Africa's turn to set Afghanistan a target in the second super over and Rahmanullah's 18 off four proved in vain as spinner Keshav Maharaj took two wickets, including one off the final ball, with the Afghans finishing on 19-2, having needed 24 to win.

The Proteas' win adds to their 57-run victory over Canada in their opener, while Afghanistan's chances of reaching the knockout stages are as good as over after back-to-back defeats.

South Africa next face New Zealand at the same venue on Saturday, while Afghanistan take on the United Arab Emirates in Delhi on Monday.

Maharaj said he wanted to bowl the super over. Meanwhile so called best white-ball spinner in the world was comfortable taking a backseat to Farooqi and Omarzai

Nabi’s birthday candles cost more than the cake.. what was he doing out in the super over
