A good T20 career will bring you lot of money and fame

A great international career can gives you more fame over a good T20 career, you can make money through sponsorship. Afridi earned a lot doing loads of TV and digital commercials in Pakistan

Presently, both are equally important. You can get fame and fortune in both. At least if you are Big3. For the others, it's split. Fame with international and fortune with the T20 leagues. Though the ODI's still gets you good pay.

But going forward it will change. T20 is the present and the future. That is where the fame and fortunes will be made for everyone and valued more.

Playing for your nation is (or should be) a source of pride that can never be replicated,no matter how many franchises you play for.

T20 Leagues provide a better income for players from most countries.

Only nobodies in cricket will take this step. McClenaghan is a nobody.

For Indian, English and Pakistani players I doubt it will be an option for the main players. Those with low prospect will probably go down this route.
See it happening more with the likes of West Indies and possibly some Australian players down the line. Already have seen it to some extent in SA and NZ
