Pristine surfaces, the all-white dress code, strawberries and, most importantly, the world's best tennis players all striving for one of sport's most prestigious prizes.

The gates open at Wimbledon on Monday, but the fun started a week ago.

Qualifying began on Monday, 26 June as lower-ranked players not automatically in the draw competed for the 16 remaining men's places and 12 women's spots.

The seedings, given to the top 32 players in each singles draw, were announced on Wednesday.

Play begins on the outside courts at 11:30 BST on Monday, before Britain's Andy Murray, the reigning men's champion, has the honour of opening on Centre Court at 13:00 BST.

Murray, Wimbledon champion in 2013 and 2016, has struggled with a hip injury in the lead-up to his title defence.

The world number one was forced him to pull out of two warm-up matches at the Hurlingham Club, but practised at the All England Club on Friday and Saturday.

And, putting aside his injury concerns, the Scot has been well short of his blistering form 12 months ago.

Seven-time champion Roger Federer, fresh from winning his fourth title of the year at the Halle Open, is still seen by many as the man to beat.

The 35-year-old Swiss won the Australian Open in January - a record 18th Grand Slam title.

Another success at Wimbledon will put him clear of the men's record of seven singles titles he shares with Pete Sampras, and move him to within one of Martina Navratilova's all-time record of nine.

Federer's long-time rival Rafael Nadal is also among the Wimbledon favourites after winning his 10th French Open crown at Roland Garros.

Nadal, 31, has overcome his own injury problems to climb back up to second in the world rankings.

Novak Djokovic held all four Grand Slam titles going into last year's Championships. Now he holds none.

The 30-year-old Serb, who rediscovered some form by winning the Eastbourne title, has dropped to fourth in the world rankings after a troubled year in which he has split with his coaching team.

No Serena Williams and no Maria Sharapova. The ladies' draw might be lacking a bit of stardust without the sport's two biggest names - 22-time Grand Slam champion Williams is pregnant, Sharapova is injured - but that does not mean it will be any less exciting.

Will we see a new women's champion this year? More than likely. Only two former winners - Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova - are playing at SW19.

Kvitova - champion in 2011 and 2014 - would be a fairytale winner as she continues her return from a career-threatening hand injury sustained when she was stabbed by an intruder at her home.

I am expecting Nadal and Federer final but Nadal needs to get though the first week in the 2nd week the court slows down and he becomes hard to beat

Wimbledon 2017: Stan Wawrinka out, Rafael Nadal wins, Nick Kyrgios retires

Fifth seed Stan Wawrinka was knocked out by Daniil Medvedev in the biggest shock on day one of Wimbledon 2017.

The 32-year-old, a three-time Grand Slam champion, needed ice on a knee injury between points as he fell to a 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 loss on Centre Court.

Earlier, Rafael Nadal began his bid for a third Wimbledon title with a comfortable win over John Millman.

But world number 20 Nick Kyrgios failed to reach round two, retiring from his opening match because of a hip injury.

Medvedev's victory over world number three Wawrinka came just hours after the 21-year-old moved into the world's top 50 for the first time.

It was his first Grand Slam victory on his Wimbledon debut, and he celebrated by dropping to the court in front of the net and kissing the ground.

"At 5-1, I started thinking about what to do after the match and I kissed the grass because it was my first Grand Slam win, even though people do it when they win Wimbledon," he said.

Medvedev lost in the first round at the Australian Open and Roland Garros earlier this year, but arrived at the All England Club feeling confident after an excellent start to his grass-court season.

The Russian reached the semi-finals at Eastbourne, losing to Novak Djokovic, and also made the last eight at Queen's and s'Hertogenbosch.

"I'm really happy," he said. "Wimbledon is my favourite Grand Slam. It was in my juniors and still is.

"One year ago I was 250th in the rankings and if someone said I would not only play on Centre but win I would say: 'You are joking!'

"I have had a great grass-court season and knew Stan had some problems. I knew I had a chance if I played good, and I played amazing."

Wimbledon continues to elude Wawrinka

Wawrinka, having already won the Australian, French and US Opens, was attempting to become only the sixth man to complete the career Grand Slam in the Open Era.

But the Swiss only played once on grass before Wimbledon, losing at Queen's to eventual champion Feliciano Lopez.

"I wasn't feeling the way I wanted to feel but I played against a great player," said Wawrinka, who has never gone past the quarter-finals in SW19.

"I had problems with the knee since Queen's. It is not something new but something I had in the past. Apparently grass is not the best surface for my knee and I need to figure out what I'm going to do and come back when I have no pain.

"I thought two weeks between Queen's and now would be enough but it wasn't. I'll talk to my team and doctor and take the time I need."

Analysis - 'Horrible draw for Wawrinka'

BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller

Medvedev's impressive English summer continued, inspired by his Centre Court surroundings on his Wimbledon debut. This always looked a horrible draw for Wawrinka, who has had some pain in his knee since switching from the clay to the grass.

A first-round defeat at Queen's Club left him short of practice and belief on what he describes as the "most challenging surface for my game".

Wawrinka had the opportunity this fortnight to become only the ninth man in history to have won all four Grand Slam titles, although given his record at Wimbledon, the odds were always very much against.

Nadal eases through on Wimbledon return

Spanish world number two Nadal beat Millman 6-1 6-3 6-2.

The win was the 850th of Nadal's career and came in his 50th match at Wimbledon.

He will next face American world number 43 Donald Young, who was 2-1 up in sets when opponent Denis Istomin retired.

Nadal missed last year's Wimbledon because of injury and was playing his first tournament match on grass in two years.

He is looking to secure a second Gram Slam title in 2017 after winning last month's French Open.

"I have been playing good tennis since the beginning of the season," said Nadal.

"The clay-court season has been special and emotional and here I have an opportunity to perform on grass."

'It was not easy to pull out' - Kyrgios

Kyrgios was visibly struggling throughout his match with France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert and pulled out shortly after losing the second set, with the Frenchman leading 6-3 6-4.

The 20th seed withdrew from the Aegon Championships at Queen's Club last month after slipping during his first-round match with Donald Young.

"I did everything I could to help it. I did not have enough time," said the 22-year-old.

It is the first time Kyrgios has gone out in round one at Wimbledon.

Kyrgios said at the weekend he was only "about 65%" fit after aggravating the long-standing injury to his left hip at Queen's, but insisted it was not a career-threatening problem.

"Surgery? I don't know at the moment. I'm not a doctor," he said.

"I spoke to the doctor before the tournament and he leaned towards not playing. But it is my favourite tournament and it was not easy to pull out.

"I thought I could win. There are some opponents I probably still could have won against, but not Pierre. I'm not taking anything away from him."

Kyrgios pulled out of the Monte Carlo Masters and Italian Open earlier this season with the hip problem that resurfaced at Queen's.

Against Herbert, he tried to win as many points as possible with his serve, and was unable to move quickly enough to reach the Frenchman's passing shots.

Herbert will next meet compatriot Benoit Paire in round two after the 28-year-old beat Brazil's Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-4 3-6 7-6 (12-10) 6-4.

Elsewhere, Croatian seventh seed Marin Cilic had too much for world number 60 Philipp Kohlschreiber, beating the German 6-4 6-2 6-3.

Japanese ninth seed Kei Nishikori also progressed with a straight-set victory, defeating Marco Cecchinato of Italy 6-2 6-2 6-0.

Looks like Stan was affected by injury. Still, a major upset on the first day.

The absence of Serena makes the ladies competition greatly weaker. Andy Murray has a good chance of winning the men's.

Wimbledon 2017: Roger Federer & Novak Djokovic through after opponents quit

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic said Wimbledon should consider rule changes after both their first-round opponents retired with injuries.

Third seed Federer led 6-3 3-0 when Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov quit with an ankle injury after 43 minutes.

Second seed Djokovic progressed after a calf injury saw Martin Klizan pull out at 6-2 2-0 down on 40 minutes.

"We had a joke in the locker room saying we should maybe play a practice set on Centre Court," said Djokovic.

Both Klizan and Dolgopolov have struggled with injuries recently and their retirements made it five over the course of two days at the Championships.

The men's tour, the ATP, introduced a rule at the start of 2017 that means a player can retire before a first-round match and retain their prize money.

A lucky loser then gets the place and money earned from qualifying, plus any further prize money accrued from the second round onwards.

The rule is not in place at the four Grand Slam tournaments.

"Maybe it should be addressed," said Djokovic.

"I think the new rule that the ATP has reinforced allows players who deserve already, who have made it to the Grand Slam main draw, to get what they deserve, but at the other hand allow someone else to play if they can.

"I support that kind of rule."

First-round losers at Wimbledon earn £35,000 this year, potentially encouraging players to take to the court when they know they are not fit enough to compete.

"The question always is, should they have started the match at all?" said Federer.

"That, only the player can answer really, in my opinion. You hope that they would give up their spot for somebody else, even though they deserve to be in there, but fitness not allowing them.

"Maybe the Grand Slams should adopt some of [the ATP rule], then maybe we would eliminate maybe half of the players [who retire]," said Federer.

"Some of them, maybe something really did happen. Now you're thrown in the same basket, so that's rough."

It's not a good look for our sport - McEnroe

Klizan suffered a recurrence of a calf injury that forced him out of tournaments in Rome and Geneva in May, and a groan went around Centre Court when, less than an hour later, Dolgopolov also failed to complete two sets.

The 15,000 spectators were at least cheered by the news that former world number one Caroline Wozniacki and Timea Babos would make a surprise appearance on Centre Court to bolster the schedule.

Three-time champion John McEnroe said on BBC Sport: "I do think when you saw Klizan he clearly wasn't ready or able to play from the very beginning.

"They've got to figure out some kind of rule change where, I suggest, they give him half the first-round prize money and bring someone else in who is at least fit and can go out 110%.

"It's not a good look for our sport when you have to sit and watch that on Centre Court.

"For someone like Klizan, that £35,000 [first-round prize money] really matters and he's reluctant to give that up.

"That's where you need to get the powers-that-be at Wimbledon, the ATP, all the people involved in our sport, even a coach to speak to Martin and make him understand that in the best interests of the sport, and for himself - he's risking a worse injury.

"This isn't something that just cropped up, he's had issues with this for a few months, so he's got to get this sorted out."

Del Potro fights back to reach round two

Juan Martin del Potro overcame a battling Thanasi Kokkinakis to seal a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 victory and reach the second round.

The Argentine 29th seed eased to the first set before turning his ankle in the second as the 21-year-old Australian took advantage to level.

A poor tie-break from Kokkinakis handed Del Potro an otherwise even third set.

Kokkinakis then saved six match points in the final game of the fourth set but Del Potro, 28, finally came through.

The former US Open champion will face Ernests Gulbis in round two after the Latvian, ranked 589 in the world, beat the Dominican Republic's Victor Estrella Burgos 6-1 6-1 6-2.

Canadian sixth seed Milos Raonic, last year's runner-up, saw off Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff 7-5 (7-5) 6-2 7-6 (7-4) in his opening match.

Elsewhere, seeded players Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Tomas Berdych and John Isner all won their respective first-round ties late on.

Wimbledon 2017: Rafael Nadal sees off Donald Young to reach round three

Two-time champion Rafael Nadal marked his return to Centre Court with a 6-4 6-2 7-5 victory over Donald Young to reach the third round at Wimbledon.

The 31-year-old Spaniard, who missed last year's tournament through injury, looked to be easing to victory until he was broken by the aggressive American when serving for the match.

But the world number two broke back and served out to love to seal the win.

Fourth seed Nadal will face Russia's 30th seed Karen Khachanov on Friday.

He joins potential semi-final opponent Andy Murray in round three after the world number one beat Dustin Brown in straight sets.

Fellow top-four seeded players Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic play their second-round matches on Thursday.

"I played a solid match and served well until the break," Nadal told BBC Sport. "It's great to be in the third round without losing a set.

"I'm just trying to go day by day. I'm taking it easy, trying to enjoy every moment. This tournament is so special."

Rejuvenated Rafa

After winning easily in Monday's first-round tie against John Millman on Court One, this was Nadal's first match back on Centre Court since a shock defeat by Dustin Brown in 2015 - he missed last year's championships with a wrist injury.

That loss to Brown capped a miserable run of four straight losses to players ranked 100 or lower at the tournament he won in 2008 and 2010.

However, at times against Young, especially in the second set, Nadal looked back to his imperious best, continuing the form that saw him finish runner-up at the Australian Open and claim his 10th French Open title this season.

The 15-time Grand Slam champion hit 37 winners in total - many of those with his imposing forehand - and won 80% of points on his first serve.

Young hit 31 winners himself, the world number 43 providing a stern test and plenty of entertainment for the crowd, particularly when he halted Nadal's progress in the third set.

Yet Nadal prevailed. He may have come into the tournament with questions over his current abilities on grass - Monday's match was his first on the surface in two years - but this showing suggested he could be ready to emulate past successes at Wimbledon.

Analysis - 'Nadal looks hungry'

Three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker

We all wanted to see how Nadal played on grass - he hadn't showed up in a while. But from what I've seen so far, he looks strong, he looks confident, he looks hungry.

He is the ultimate competitor and will give all he has got. Of course, everybody's favourite is Federer but then you have Murray and Djokovic.

The big four are back. They all have a realistic chance, but it depends who they go up against.

Plain sailing for most of the seeds

Elsewhere on Wednesday, there were few upsets in this half of the men's draw, which contains Nadal and Murray.

Two-time semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needed less than two hours to beat Italy's Simone Bolelli 6-1 7-5 6-2 - although the French 12th seed was troubled by the swarm of flying ants that descended on Wimbledon.

"I've had a few experiences in the United States, with the light at night sometimes you have big bugs," said Tsonga.

"But this was a little bit different, because these ones was very small but a lot, so it was special sometimes, it was in my nose and in my ear."

Tsonga faces American Sam Querrey in the third round after the 24th seed saw off Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-3.

Croatia's seventh seed Marin Cilic eased past Germany's Florian Mayer 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 7-5 to set up a tie against American 26th seed Steve Johnson.

Despite a laboured performance, ninth seed Kei Nishikori came through 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-1 7-6 (8-6) against Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky and will meet Spain's 18th seed Roberto Bautista Agut next.

However, 14th seed Lucas Pouille of France is out, beaten by 2013 semi-finalist Jerzy Janowicz, with the Pole sealing a 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 6-1 win.

London: America's Bethanie Mattek-Sands suffered a horror knee injury at Wimbledon on Thursday which left her screaming and crying in pain in the middle of the court.

The 32-year-old collapsed to the ground after damaging her right knee as she approached the net in the first game of the deciding set against Romania's Sorana Cirstea on Court 17.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands is helped by medics on court after suffering an injury. AFP Bethanie Mattek-Sands is helped by medics on court after suffering an injury. AFP
"Please help me, please, please," screamed the 32-year-old in scenes so distressing that television cameras panned away from the stricken player.

Mattek-Sands's husband Justin tried to console his wife as medics arrived, while Cirstea was distraught and in tears.

After lying prone on the ground for around 20 minutes, Mattek-Sands was eventually stretchered away.

Mattek-Sands's doubles partner, Lucie Safarova, with whom she shares the world number one ranking as well as four Grand Slam titles, also arrived at the scene in tears.

"Really wish they would turn the cameras and mics off on Bethanie's court," tweeted fellow American player Madison Keys as the shocking images and sounds of her compatriot were played out on the tournament TV screens.

Safarova was inconsolable after the horrific injury to her doubles partner. The 32-year-old Mattek-Sands is ranked No 1 in women's doubles. She and her partner, Safarova, have won three consecutive Grand Slam doubles titles, including at the French Open last month.

Wimbledon 2017: Roger Federer & Novak Djokovic into third round

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic made swift progress with straight-set wins in the second round at Wimbledon.

Third seed Federer, seeking a record eighth title, beat Dusan Lajovic 7-6 (7-0) 6-3 6-2 on a hot evening on Centre Court.

Djokovic, seeded second, earlier swept past Adam Pavlasek 6-2 6-2 6-1 on Court One.

Sixth seed Milos Raonic, eighth seed Dominic Thiem and 10th seed Alexander Zverev secured places in round three.

I couldn't get rid of the nerves - Federer

Swiss Federer and Djokovic of Serbia both completed matches for the first time this week after their first-round opponents had retired with injuries.

Three-time champion Djokovic needed just over 90 minutes to see off Czech Pavlasek, the world number 136 making his debut at the Championships.

The 30-year-old will play Latvia's Ernests Gulbis, after the world number 589 beat Argentine Juan Martin del Potro 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-3).

"Overall I managed to impose my own rhythm and play the game I intended to play," Djokovic, who converted seven of his 18 break points, told the BBC.

"It was very warm and hot and not easy to play point after point in some of the long rallies."

Federer, 35, lost the opening seven points and fell 2-0 down against Lajovic, who played well above his ranking of 79 for much of the contest.

It was still not enough to seriously trouble the Swiss, watched by his parents in the royal box.

Federer broke back immediately and after a tight set, dominated the tie-break to take decisive control of proceedings.

Ninety minutes, nine aces and 30 winners later, he wrapped up a solid win and a third-round clash with Germany's 27th seed Mischa Zverev.

"I struggled early on. I couldn't get rid of the nerves and struggled to find my rhythm," Federer told BBC Sport.

"I should feel comfortable here, and I do, but the problem is on grass if you're struggling it can take a while.

"I wasn't too worried. Nerves are a funny thing, sometimes you get horribly nervous and other times it's a piece of cake. I'm happy it happened in the second round."

'He looked like the old Novak'

Seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion Peter Fleming on BBC Two

Novak Djokovic and his camp will be very pleased. He wasn't at the top of his game right away but through the second and third sets, he started to move well. He eliminated the unforced errors and looked like the old Novak.

Will he be able to maintain that level when the opposition improves? He is starting to put it together.

Pavlasek didn't have enough to trouble Novak. You need a huge shot to threaten one of the greatest defenders of all time.

It was a pretty straightforward affair for Federer and he'll be pleased to get back to the locker room, an early dinner and prepare for Saturday.

Lajovic played well but couldn't quite come up with the shots required in that first set tie-break.

Raonic battles past Youzhny

Raonic, runner-up last year, was in trouble when he faced a set point to trail two sets to love against Russia's Mikhail Youzhny.

The Canadian came through 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 7-5 in two hours and 40 minutes on court two.

"I was fortunate I didn't get down two sets to love in that tiebreaker," said Raonic. "I got very lucky in those scenarios."

Austrian Thiem saw off Frenchman Gilles Simon 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-4 and Alexander Zverev, brother of Mischa, beat American Frances Tiafoe 6-3 6-4 6-3.

Elsewhere, 23rd seed John Isner lost in five sets to Israel's Dudi Sela.

The world number 90 beat the American 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 and will face 13th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.

Bulgaria's Dimitrov beat former Wimbledon semi-finalist Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 6-2 6-1, with the 26-year-old securing a comprehensive victory over the Cypriot with a stunning diving forehand volley.

Spain's David Ferrer reached the third round after his opponent Steve Darcis was forced to withdraw with a back problem, the ninth retirement of the singles tournament so far.

American 17th seed Jack Sock went out in the second round against Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner, who won 6-3 6-4 3-6 2-6 6-2.

Horrific story, that!.

Is djok a serious contender for this tournament btw ?

I suppose he is among the favourites, although his form over the past year or so suggests he's unlikely to even make the final. I'd say he is perhaps the third or fourth favourite after Roger, Andy and perhaps Nadal (given the Spaniard's recent form).

Wimbledon 2017: Rafael Nadal beats Karen Khachanov to reach last 16

Two-time champion Rafael Nadal is through to the last 16 of Wimbledon with a straight-set win over Russia's Karen Khachanov.

Spanish fourth seed Nadal took the first set in just 21 minutes and eventually won 6-1 6-4 7-6 (7-3) on Centre Court.

Ninth seed Kei Nishikori is out after the Japanese lost in four sets to Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

Marin Cilic is also through after comfortably beating Steve Johnson.

For a while I played fantastically - Nadal

Nadal broke the 21-year-old Khachanov's serve three times in the first set as he completely dominated his opponent.

The second set was a tighter affair, with Khachanov finally holding his serve but still being broken in the third game.

Nadal had to save a set point in the third to force a tie-break, but the French Open champion triumphed in two hours and 14 minutes.

Victory means Nadal has not dropped a set in his past 10 Grand Slam matches, winning 28 completed sets in a row.

If he reaches the final then he will return to the top of the world rankings for the first time since June 2014.

"For a while I played fantastically," Nadal told the BBC. "The first set and a half was a great, great level - then it was a little bit tougher.

"I'm happy about almost everything."

The 31-year-old will play Luxembourg's Gilles Muller in the fourth round, who earlier beat Britain's Aljaz Bedene.

Nishikori lost 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 3-6 to 18th seed Bautista Agut in three hours and 21 minutes on court three.

Bautista Agut has never gone beyond the fourth round at a Grand Slam, while Nishikori is yet to go beyond the last 16 at Wimbledon.

Croatia's seventh seed Cilic, who beat American Johnson 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4, will face Bautista Agut in round four.

Play was suspended for bad light on court two with American Sam Querrey leading 12th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-5 on serve in the fifth set.

Wimbledon 2017: Roger Federer & Novak Djokovic through to fourth round

Former champions Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were in impressive form as they reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in straight sets.

Third seed Federer played superbly in a 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 6-4 win over German 27th seed Mischa Zverev on Centre Court.

Djokovic, seeded second, had earlier looked fired up as he beat Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 6-4 6-1 7-6 (7-2).

Federer will play Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov and Djokovic faces Adrian Mannarino in the last 16 on Monday.

Djokovic raises level and focus

An early argument with the umpire seemed to fire up Djokovic, who told the official to "focus" - something he later apologised for - and then appeared to take his own advice.

From a break of serve down at 4-2, the Serb powered into a 6-4 5-0 lead and had a set point for 10 straight games.

Gulbis, 28, clung on briefly but the second set soon disappeared and the Latvian then had lengthy treatment on his back.

Ranked down at 548 after a succession of injuries, the former world number 10 recovered sufficiently to earn a break point at the start of the third set.

Djokovic, a friend of Gulbis since their junior academy days in Germany, snuffed out the danger but required a tie-break to eventually see off the Latvian after two hours and 12 minutes.

"I am delighted with my performance today," said Djokovic, 30.

"I thought I raised the level of tennis, comparing to the first couple of matches. This was the most focused I have been on the court and it came at the right time."

Federer wins all-court battle

The 35-year-old Federer kept up the form that has seen him rated as the favourite to land a record eighth title, and first since 2012.

The Swiss played beautifully to overcome the attacking serve-volley game of Zverev, the man who beat Andy Murray in fourth round at the Australian Open in January.

Zverev pegged back Federer from 4-1 to earn a tie-break in the first set but a terrific backhand volley brought up set point for the seven-time champion and he duly converted.

A spectacular return game that included drive backhand and forehand winners gave Federer the crucial break early in the second set, and a Zverev double-fault gave up the initiative in the third.

A 27th win in 29 matches this year was wrapped up after one hour and 49 minutes, and the Swiss heads into week two in ideal shape.

"It's important to get through the first week with a good feeling and I think I got that," said Federer.

"The first match with the walkover saved me a lot of energy, crucial energy. We go one round at a time.

"The first goal is to get through to the second week and I am happy to sit back and relax and then come back on Monday."

Analysis

Boris Becker, three-time champion and ex-coach of Djokovic:

For the first time in a while I see the passion back. Ultimately it's about passion; how much you're willing to sacrifice, how much you're willing to invest to win and go far in the tournament. All these screams really are a sign that the passion is back. He wants to win desperately.

Nadal with an impressive comeback to take it to the decider. Meanwhile, Federer cruises towards the quarter-finals.

Damn, last I checked Federer-Dimitrov it was 4-4 in the 1st set.

Now I see Roger swept him aside with disdain.

Muller was so calm and composed at the end

Well done but Nadal is finished on grass

Insane match. Fifth set lasted for more than two hours! However, Muller might play like a zombie in his quarter-final against Cilic as a result of this draining clash.

Muller serve was to good for Nadal I stopped believing Nadal could win after 5-4 in the fifth as first serve advantage was going to be too tough had Nadal been serving first in the last I think he could have won. Muller is also having a great year. It's weird most of the top players are all in their 30s these days

Wimbledon 2017: Andy Murray plays Sam Querrey in quarter-finals

Britain's Andy Murray will face a different challenge when he takes on big-serving American Sam Querrey in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The world number one and defending champion, 30, plays 24th seed Querrey on Centre Court at 13:00 BST.

Murray expects his return to be tested against the serving prowess of Querrey, 29, having beaten four unorthodox opponents on his way to the last eight.

Roger Federer, 35, plays Milos Raonic in the second match on Centre Court.

The Swiss seven-time champion, seeded third, lost to Canadian sixth seed Raonic in last year's semi-final but has looked in imperious form so far this year.

On Court One, Serbia's two-time winner Novak Djokovic plays Czech 11th seed Tomas Berdych, after Croatian seventh seed Marin Cilic plays 16th seed Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, conqueror of world number two Rafael Nadal in round four.

After rain disrupted play on Tuesday, Wednesday's weather is forecast to be dry, overcast and cool, at about 21C.

'When he's dictating, he's very dangerous'

After overcoming the unpredictable talents of Alexander Bublik, Dustin Brown, Fabio Fognini and Benoit Paire to reach the quarter-finals, Murray faces a much clearer task against the 6ft 6in Querrey.

The 29-year-old from California is second in the aces chart with 99 and a fastest serve of 137mph.

However, Murray has won more points at the net as he has been sent scurrying all over Centre Court in his first four matches, testing out the sore hip that disrupted his build-up.

"Like I said at the beginning of the tournament, I'll be able to get through seven matches if that's what I have to do," the Scot said after his win over Benoit Paire on Monday.

"Obviously I want to try to get to the final. I've done a good job so far here."

Murray has won seven of their eight previous matches for the loss of just two sets, but Querrey has played his best tennis at Wimbledon over the past two years.

The American upset then world number one Djokovic in the third round last year on his way to a first Grand Slam quarter-final, and has matched that feat 12 months on.

"He obviously likes the conditions here," said Murray. "He played really well last year.

"I maybe played one or two service games in the first set [against Paire] that weren't the best. Against Querrey, you can't really afford that. He's not an easy guy to break.

"When he's standing up on the baseline, hitting forehands, dictating, he's a very dangerous player."

Querrey knows what to expect from Murray, who has an excellent record against big servers and will play his 10th consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final.

"I haven't really learned anything [from previous matches]," said Querrey.

"He makes a ton of balls. He plays great defence. Who doesn't know that? I have to try to beat him playing my game."

'I do believe good things can happen'

Yet to drop a set and with just two losses to his name in 2017, Federer is the favourite to reclaim the title he last won in 2012.

Twelve months ago, he lost to Raonic in a five-set semi-final that proved to be his final match of 2016, before he took an extended break to let his injured knee heal properly.

It worked better than anyone could have imagined as the 35-year-old returned at the start of the year to win his 18th major title in Australia, and is still riding that wave of confidence.

Raonic, 26, is not quite in the form of last year but remains a fearsome opponent on grass, with a fastest serve so far of 142mph.

"To beat a big server is a different kind of match," said Federer. "It's more of a penalty shootout.

"On the return I've got to keep going for it, keep staying aggressive. Positive attitude. I do believe good things can happen."

'I know what I need to do'

Djokovic, 30, returns to action for the second day in a row after his fourth-round match against Adrian Mannarino was delayed by rain, but the Serb won in three comfortable sets on Tuesday.

Berdych, 31, has impressed in reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final for a year but is on the wrong end of a crushing 25-2 career record against Djokovic, having lost the last 12.

"For me, it's important to start off well," said Djokovic. "I've played him many times. I know what I need to do. Hopefully I can execute that."

The opening match on Court One will see a clash of two of the best grass-courters, with Muller hoping to build on his win over Nadal and Cilic through to a fourth straight Wimbledon quarter-final.

"I played Marin not too long ago at the Queen's Club in the semi-finals," said Muller, 34.

"I lost to him in three tough sets. Obviously he's playing good."

I'm rooting for Federer here, the other dudes still have time.

Red-hot Federer cruises into the final, where he is to face Cilic. Great opportunity to win his nineteenth major.
