Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has expressed his desire to play his “last season” of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with the Quetta Gladiators.

Talking exclusively in DawnNewsTV show ‘Live with Adil Shahzeb’, Afridi said even though he was currently associated with the Multan Sultans, “if the franchise releases me, I will prefer to represent the Quetta Gladiators in my last season.”

The star all-rounder said he was also undergoing trainings to stay fit.

Afridi was ruled out mid-season in the recently-concluded PSL-6, won by Multan Sultans, after suffering a back injury during training.

"I missed not being with the team in the PSL final but I was constantly in touch with Muhammad Rizwan, Sohaib Maqsood and Shan Masood through text messages and I kept guiding them and sharing my experience about the importance of a big match, especially the final," Afridi said.

He also congratulated the Pakistan Cricket Board for arranging the remaining matches of the PSL despite difficulties. However, he added that leagues did not bear the desired fruit unless they were held on home soil.

To a question about prospects of the PSL in comparison to other leagues, he said there was no significant difference between the PSL and the Indian Premier League (IPL), “except that of the amount offered to players”.

He said the core purpose of holding cricket leagues was to bring out new talent and the PSL had produced a number of good players.

Responding to a query about Pakistan’s chances in the upcoming World T20, he said preparations for the T20 World Cup should begin eight to nine months prior to the tournament. He added that too many changes before the event could cause problems in creating successful team combinations.

Would be an interesting signing for QG but they've already got Nawaz as their spin-bowling all-rounder and I don't think they'd drop him.

Nawaz is not even half the player that retired Afridi is.

Interesting.

Seems like Afridi knows that Multan Sultans will release Afridi after their recent success with their current combination.

Quetta will be nice for Lala with his best friend Moin and student Sarfraz there. He will be a badshah there again instead of being a number at the Sultans.

One could say that the philosophy of the Qalanders is more suited to Shahid Afridi. But I guess he wouldn't want to end last in his last PSL stint.

They often play with the combination legspinner/left arm spinner.

This will be the end of Zahid Mahmood @ Quetta.

Given Afridi's stature in Pakistan Cricket, he will probably end up at QG and retire there.

It will be funny to see how Sarfaraz reacts when Afridi is hit for a boundary compared with when Zahid is hit, but I won't be surprised if Sarfaraz is relinquished of captaincy and Afridi takes over instead.

PCB should add a ‘one off’ special rule for the next PSL as a way to say farewell to Afridi - let him have 3 lives as a batsman.

We might then get to see him score a couple of quarter centuries (score over 25)in the tournament even after getting caught out first ball, wouldn’t that be nice.

Gets out first ball yet he’s still won more games for PAK with the bat than many Pakistani “legends” i.e Tuk Tuk.

An ageing, underperforming and angry Sarfaraz was reason enough to not like and support QG. Now, if this happens and Afridi joins QG I will surely have my least fav. PsL team clearly identified.

Could be a calming influence on the skipper?

Sad to see Afridi reduced to being this unwanted. He should just call it a day for good now. His body is just not up to it anymore.

He could wish to play for Lahore Qalanders keeping in mind that Rashid may not be available next year and they need a spinner who can bat in their lineup and LQ have a tendency to go for big name players. But I think no one from other teams want to play for LQ. Even LQ's own players look uninterested in playing and winning for them.

Nadeem Omar will easily pick Afridi if he is released by MS.

As much as I would like to see Afridi with IU, don't think it's going to happen considering IU pick players based on data rather than the weight of the name.
