Islamabad : Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Senator Syed Shibli Faraz Thursday said his ministry has started work on the National Hemp Policy which would be formulated in consultation with the Ministry of Commerce.

He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Pakistan Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Hemp Development Programme 2021 held at PMAS Arid University Greenhouse Research Farm (Institute of Hydroponic) at Rawat. The minister stated that it was very unfortunate that the agriculture sector which was backbone of our economy had not received due attention in the past.

Shibli Faraz said that Prime Minister, Imran Khan had always emphasized starting such projects which could help move the country forward economically and help create jobs opportunities. Cannabis cultivation is the result of this great vision, he said. The minister was of the view that the secret of the country’s development lied in the Science and Technology sector.

He said that the Ministry of Science and Technology was taking steps to create linkages between research institutions and the universities. The minister said that the one acre land could produce 10 litres of CBD oil which was also used in various medicines. Cannabis cultivation would bring investment in the country, he added.

The cannabis project was rejected earlier but the world was working on it, he said and emphasized that ?we also have to start seed production ourselves?.

Shibli Faraz said that Hemp seeds were very expensive and his ministry was also focusing on production of hemp seeds and starting exporting cannabis products.

The minister said that Pakistan had a vast and well-developed network of Research and Development institutions and academia and the present government is paying due attention to the optimal utilization of these natural resources through coordinated efforts of available scientific and academic infrastructure with particular emphasis on the commercialization of resultant products, technologies, processes and services.

The Hemp Development Programme is a development project of the current government which was initiated on the directives of the Prime Minister, Imran Khan.

The Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology will execute the project in collaboration with the PMAS Arid Agriculture University.

Is Pakistan going to foray into Medical Cannabis and Marijuana industry ?
What is the current status of legalisation of weed in Pakistan ?

Weed is bit of a taboo, mostly, but legal in India.. especially govt owned Bhaang shops in parts of Northern India. How is it in Pakistan ?

I think drugs overall are illegal in Pakistan but how strongly are these laws enforced, I cannot speak to it.

you can find marijuana growing freely near the villages and farms in pakistan, the smell is very pungent during certain time's of the year aswel and my uncle told me villagers make tea out of the plant to help them relax. i think on paper it is illegal but the enforcement isnt that tight.

Pakistan is facing a drug problme. Hashish has become very common and people get addicted to it and ruin their healths.

While it is illegal, but you can get away with a 2000-4000 bribe.

By legalizing its production people will sell it illegally by making hash.. law has never been implemented and it would be implemented in such cases either.

Thats actually bhang. It looks like marijuana and the leaf specie is basically the same.

But there are some levels that are attached to it.. bhang has lower levels and marijuana has high dont know what those measures are...

Yes you are right people do drink bhang.

you can make bhang with any marijuana strain, i think what ur trying to say is that local strains are less potent than foreign strains.

levels refer to cbd (painkiller which helps u relax) and thc (gets you high) concentrations within the plant.

some strains of pakistani weed however, i hear, have very high levels of thc and are thus fairly potent.

CBD oil and medical marijuana is huge demand in the world today. This can be side money spinner for the Pakistan government.

Same in India. As kids in my hometown, we used to play cricket in some local grounds and there always used to be few guys plucking those leaves and look for fresh stuff, for their night fix i guess.

Another gift from the messiah running so called madina riasat now delving into drugs and weed cultivation knowing full well that drugs are blighting lives of many young pakistani men since a lot are jobless and struggling.

This can be a huge money maker for Pak.

If it is grown for medicinal purposes and used for the extraction of oil, then Pak will gain a lot of deals from the Western countries.

It is already gaining much speed in the west, so might as well take advantage now and get everything done.

Also, if they can use hemp to restart the process of making paper, ropes and other stuff, then that is another money maker with the Western countries heading towards greener items.

At the same time this will destroy the youth.

What do you think, these companies wont be sellling drugs under the table to the publix?

i dont think regulated companies need to, for example the UK is the biggest distributor of medicinal cannabis in the world yet smoking cannabis is still illegal, compared to other european countries like Spain and Holland.

Far more money is made in medicinal cannabis then on the black market and even if they did start supplying marijuana like they do in coffee shops in holland etc it would be a lot cleaner than the stuff you will find on road that most of the youth currently indulge in.

Why would they need to, if they make millions in dollars?

That would be stupid!

Selling to the youth in rupees and making pittance, when you can get paid big bucks in dollars.

Rs.500 for a small gram here in Pakistan. ANd it happens, it will get sold here to balance out the demand and supply for international markets

You cant compare Pakistan to european countries. They have law and order implemented. Pakistan cant and never would be able to implement law and order here.

Alot of people are addicted to drugs like Hashish and no one really cares about it because it dosent come under the hard drugs category. Yet, no one cares to look at the effect of hashish is having on Pakistani youth.

No it won't.

Absolute rubbish.

No company is going to sell its prized possession to locals for 500rs.

Not even worth 1 dollar.
