ICC World Cup: Major setback for Pakistan as key players battle viral infection

The preparations of Pakistan's national cricket team for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 have been thrown into disarray as several key players have fallen victim to viral chest infection, causing concerns and disruptions on the path to the tournament.

Sources close to the team revealed that four to five players have been afflicted by a severe chest infection, resulting in high fevers and illness.

As per reports, Shaheen Shah Afridi was struck by a viral bacterial infection. He sought medical attention, including receiving antibiotic drips, to aid in his recovery.
Abdullah Shafique also succumbed to a severe high fever, with doctors currently examining his condition.

Moreover, Zaman Khan joined the ranks of those affected by a viral infection, compounding the team's woes.

Among the affected, is leg-spinner Usama Mir, who found himself battling the ailment for five days and was placed in quarantine as a precautionary measure. All medical tests conducted on Mir, aside from COVID-19 and dengue, yielded negative results.

Mir has now made a notable recovery and is reportedly available for selection once again.
Amid these challenges, the National Team's media manager disclosed that cricketers are showing signs of improvement and are on the road to recovery.

The gravity of the situation became evident as the scheduled practice session for today was canceled due to the health issues facing the national players.

It remains to be seen how this unexpected setback will impact Pakistan's preparations for the highly anticipated ICC World Cup 2023, which is just around the corner.

I am just wondering what will happen if we cannot field 11 players plus the 12th man. Do we forfeit the game?

reserves come in.
India and Pakistan are just 30 mins away by flight. If PCB secured visas for extra players, calling in a player through a chartered flight wont be an issue

Reserves? First time I am hearing about reserves, who are our reserves?

This could be critical to Indian chances if Pandya is ruled out. They won't be able to balance the side without him.

Medical Update: Hardik Pandya

Team India vice-captain Hardik Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle while fielding on his own bowling during India’s match against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune.

The all-rounder was taken for scans and is advised rest. He will be under the constant supervision of the BCCI Medical Team.

He will not be taking the flight to Dharamsala with the team on 20th October and will now join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England.

This could not be such a costly miss for India against NZ in Dharmasala. Pandya for all the balance & X-factor he brings to this Indian team he is unfortunately inducing few negative things! It is because of his presence that Shardul Thakur also gets picked! People often mistake that Thakur is giving cushion to Indian batting, but in reality he is giving cushion to Pandya!

Pandya is actually 2nd best pacer in the team after Bumrah (yes more important than even Siraj/Shami. He is so effective and you will understand this only if you have followed Indian LOI Cricket "closely" for past few years), he is also 3rd best bowler in the team (After Bumrah & Kuldeep). But on the downside he has this fitness issues...

That's why we keep selecting a cushion for him in the team (either an extra pacer like Shami, Thakur, etc or extra spinner like Axar, Ashwin, etc) otherwise we would have easily seen an extra batsman in the team which is the actual need of a good LOI team (It is not that Pandya goes for lots of runs if he bowls full 10 overs, he can do much better than Shami/Siraj overall in a 10 over spell on Indian pitches and better than Jadeja on overseas pitches. Even if he goes for some runs in one spell, he has the tenacity to make comebacks in the next spells like a specialist bowler does! It is just because of his fitness that he seldom bowls full quota of overs!)

Just imagine if India plays with Bumrah, Siraj/Shami, Kuldeep & Jadeja in SC and Bumrah, Siraj, Shami & Kuldeep/Jadeja in overseas, then Pandya is not such a bad choice for at least 5th bowler, isn't it? Most teams would opt for only 4 specialist bowlers and 5th bowler will always be so-and-so whom opponents can target. Pandya is definitely a lot better than "a 5th bowler"...

Some cricket purists have hatred towards Pandya because he leaks runs, but come on he is an alrounder (and a scarcity in Indian Cricket - a fast bowling alrounder). He is not a trundler... He can work out pace... He is smart too (has enough variations to pick wickets with new ball, bounce out batsmen & pick wickets in middle overs and also not that bad at the death - at least you can compare this with someone like Thakur...) You can only criticize one thing, just one thing with Pandya and that is "his fitness" and that is the reason for his absence in Test Cricket too (India would have got so much benefit had he played in tests - a 3rd seamer at home and 4th seamer overseas - and a 6th/7th batsman along with wicket-keeper, giving perfect balance to the team!) But unfortunately he has limitations (only if Kapil Dev or someone can workout with his fitness issues and convert him to a bigger prospect!)

Pandya would have got benefited if there was a better spin-bowling alrounder (primary skill - batting) like Sehwag/Yuvaraj/Raina... Unfortunately India don't have! If so, Pandya would have shared bowling with him and also we would be thinking of selecting between Jadeja & Shami (depending on conditions) and would have thrown out this Thakur!

Remember Thakur got into our test side too because of the same reason (Pandya's fitness issues), he has similar role in tests (a bowler who can bat a bit and give cushion to the team! "Axar does that well at home on merit, while Thakur does it through fluke in overseas!") It is unfortunate that fatty/beefy Thakur has better fitness than Pandya! There is a saying in Kannada language that the one who has teeth don't get to eat nuts while the one without teeth won't find nuts to eat...

So India should ideally think of players like Tilak Varma going forward instead of guys like SKY at least in ODIs (a double benefit who can give left hand variety in the batting lineup and also he has shown some promise with part-time spin). This will give breathing space to Pandya, as we can then play one between Jadeja/Shami based on conditions and Thakur will be out of equation!

Coming to Dharmasala match India should go with specialists and be confident... Should attack NZ, that's the best bet against them instead of choosing conservative approach...

Rohit
Gill
Kishan
Kohli
Rahul
Iyer
Jadeja
Shami
Bumrah
Kuldeep
Siraj

So we have got a proper batsman in the form of Kishan (don't make the mistake of going with SKY... Kishan has been doing well off late, he has the match practice and will give left-hand utility to the batting lineup) and a proper bowler in the form of Shami (don't play Thakur please even if you are tempted to give that so-called cushion at No.8... The batting lineup is good enough). So Pandya is not such a miss at least for this match...

Medical Update: Reece Topley

Team England's fast bowler Reece Topley sustained an injury to his index finger while bowling during the match against South Africa at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The ball hit the edge of the finger, around the nails. The index finger is getting attention now as he walks off the field.

Matthew Mott confirms that Reece Topley has a suspected cracked finger but Jofra Archer will not be considered to replace him.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has approved Brydon Carse as a replacement for Reece Topley in the England squad.
Carse, who has played 12 ODIs, was named as a replacement as Topley was ruled out of the tournament after breaking his left index finger during England’s match against South Africa on Saturday.
The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad.

He has been ruled out of Cricket World Cup and New Zealand have announced Kyle Jamieson as his replacement.

Icc should reconsider this stupid 15 player only rule. Wc is a long tournament and each squad needs to be atleast 18 players or even 20. Injuries are expected in a long 45 day tournament with 9 games and traveling and the intense pressure.

Pandya worst fears confirmed as India announce replacement player for World Cup

India's unbeaten start to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup has received a massive hit with news that star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has failed to recover from his ankle injury and will miss the remainder of the tournament.

Pandya hurt his left ankle while bowling during India's World Cup match against Bangladesh in Pune last month and it has now been confirmed that the 30-year-old has failed to recover in time to part of the rest of the campaign.

His place in India's squad will be taken by Prasidh Krishna, with the inexperienced fast bowler parachuted into the playing group after being approved by the tournament's Event Technical Committee on Saturday.

Krishna has just 19 white-ball appearances to his name for India and was last seen at international level when he picked up the prized wicket of David Warner in taking 1/45 from nine overs against Australia just prior to the World Cup.

While Krishna has shown signs of promise in the past with 33 international wickets, the right-armer is going to be competing with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj for a place in India's pace attack.

With the Event Technical Committee approving India's replacement player on Saturday, it means Krishna is available for selection for Sunday's crucial World Cup clash against fellow tournament pacesetter South Africa.

India and South Africa currently occupy the top two places on the World Cup standings and the winner of Sunday's match in Kolkata will be in the box seat to finish the group stage of the tournament in first spot.

Injury update:

Shakib Al Hasan will miss Bangladesh's last game against Australia due to a fracture of his left index finger.

The Netherlands have made a change to their squad ahead of their last match at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup against India on Sunday.

Pacer Ryan Klein has been removed from the 15-player squad due to a back injury, with young batter Noah Croes promoted into the playing group for the final clash of the tournament.

The alteration was approved by the tournament Event Technical Committee on Thursday, meaning Croes could feature against unbeaten India in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Croes has played just one ODI for his country, with his sole appearance coming in the final of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier in July when the 23-year-old managed to score just seven against Sri Lanka.

Klein has appeared once for the Netherlands in the ongoing tournament, with his sole effort coming against New Zealand in Hyderabad when he went wicketless from seven overs.

While the Netherlands are out of contention of reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup, a victory over India could propel them into one of eight qualification spots for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy event in Pakistan.

Netherlands squad: Scott Edwards (c), Max O'Dowd, Bas de Leede, Vikram Singh, Teja Nidamanuru, Paul van Meekeren, Colin Ackermann, Roelof van der Merwe, Logan van Beek, Aryan Dutt, Noah Croes, Wesley Barresi, Saqib Zulfiqar, Shariz Ahmad, Sybrand Engelbrecht.

No 'sob story' for hobbled Starc ahead of semi-final

Mitchell Starc remains short of full fitness and admits he has not lived up to the heights of his standout 2015 and 2019 World Cup campaigns, but will not let that affect his pursuit of a third global limited-overs title this week.

Starc is still carrying injury niggles that date back to this year’s Ashes series, leaving Australia's selectors and medical staff to overrule his objections and rest him from their final group match against Bangladesh on Saturday.

"I didn't have much of a say in the decision," said the 33-year-old. "I've carried a few things from the Ashes and it was a chance to give them an extra chance (to recover) before the semi-finals."

Starc finished this year’s Test tour of the United Kingdom, where he played five of a possible six Tests across the World Test Championship final and Ashes series, with shoulder and groin issues.

The speedster declined to reveal whether they remain his chief injury concerns, insisting he would be fine to play in Thursday's semi-final against South Africa in Kolkata.

"If I only played when I was 100 per cent, I would have probably played 10 games," he said. "All bowlers around the world deal with stuff, we just don’t have to talk about it like batters do."

Bavuma may miss the semi-final against Australia because of his fitness issue but I think it won't be a big blow for South Africa as they have a very good replaces in their ranks in the shape of Reeza Hendricks.
