The thought actually came to my mind because some of my friends don't at all care about bilateral ODI series. They often complain that the star player is not playing (say a Starc or a Cummins). But when the World Cup is on, they suddenly start following matches and become very interested. They start wishing that World Cup should come on every year with all top 10 teams playing with each other in the league phase (current format) and then the knockouts. Though we can't compare T20 leagues with World cups but they are innocently like if T20 leagues can be played in every year then why can't world cup be played in every year !

Bilateral ODIs are often deemed meaningless and often it's believed that it's losing it's charm. Some major players (all format players) also skip bilateral ODIs every now and then as part of their workload management. All these decrease the excitement.

In world cup, there is meaning and excitement. All the top 10 teams participate and all the star players participate (or at least try to) in it. So, it's a treat for the fans.

So, do you think it's a good idea or a bad idea to stage world cup in every year and cut down some bilateral ODI series ?

Thoughts ?

No. A World Cup is a special event to be built towards every four years. Every year means you'd devalue the tournament.

However bilateral ODIs definitely need context. That's why ICC have introduced the new ODI Championship from 2020 which'll feed into the next World Cup.

ICC is trying for ODI championship just like test championship to make the bilateral series more meaningful.

So I dont think there is a need to reduce the importance of WC.

World Cup will lose it's significance if it takes place every year.

What's this new ODI championship thing?

Awful idea.

World T20 every 2 years, surrounded by 1 ODI World Cup and 1 Test Championship each every 4 years should be enough cricket.

I think it’s the ODI league which will use for qualification for next World Cup. If I’m not wrong top 5 teams ranked in this league will get automatic qualification for 2023 worldCup. Remaining teams will battle in qualifier like Windies and Afg team did for this worldCup. India is exempted from qualification due to being host.

What's this new ODI championship thing?

A 13 team ODI League. Each team plays eight series (four home, four away) over two years. Each series will consist of three matches.

The top seven plus India as hosts automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup with the bottom 5 entering a qualifier.

This is a great idea. This will give the ICC rankings more meaning.

Tri-series should be held to get associate teams to play more games against top teams. No one wants to play bilaterals against them.

Yup.

If a series is being held in India include Afghanistan.

If a series is being held in SA include Zimbabwe

If a series is being held in England include Ireland/Scotland

etc etc.

It will be the worst idea if WC takes place every year. WC will probably lose the meaning.

I want to see WC once in every three years. Four years is too long.

That's a great idea. It will give a more realistic indication of the rankings and the series isn't too long either it could be motivational for the players to play these out and show the world their might.

Thanks for the info.

Please recreate your thread suggesting an ODI World Cup every three years instead and your thread will skyrocket.

I almost think you're trolling, a World Cup every year? come on bro you can't suggest that with a straight face.

Four years is indeed too long, three years like a poster above suggested would be money and the sweet spot going forward.

The World T20 should be every 2 years. T20 bilaterals are meaningless anyway . Also T20 is the way we can grow the game more.

WC in 2019
Test Championship 2019-2021
WT20 in 2020
ODI Championship in 2020
WT20 in 2021
Test Championship 2021-2023
World Cup in 2023
WT20 in 2024

I think that's enough cricket. The WC being once ever four years is what makes it special.

If not every year, at least every 2 years.

WCC every two years should not be difficult. Unlike the football WC which has 32 to 48 countries participating, in cricket it is only about 10.
