The thought actually came to my mind because some of my friends don't at all care about bilateral ODI series. They often complain that the star player is not playing (say a Starc or a Cummins). But when the World Cup is on, they suddenly start following matches and become very interested. They start wishing that World Cup should come on every year with all top 10 teams playing with each other in the league phase (current format) and then the knockouts. Though we can't compare T20 leagues with World cups but they are innocently like if T20 leagues can be played in every year then why can't world cup be played in every year !
Bilateral ODIs are often deemed meaningless and often it's believed that it's losing it's charm. Some major players (all format players) also skip bilateral ODIs every now and then as part of their workload management. All these decrease the excitement.
In world cup, there is meaning and excitement. All the top 10 teams participate and all the star players participate (or at least try to) in it. So, it's a treat for the fans.
So, do you think it's a good idea or a bad idea to stage world cup in every year and cut down some bilateral ODI series ?
Thoughts ?
