Would Shikhar Dhawan walk into ODI World Cup XI of other major countries today?

With Gill's emergence, Dhawan has been faded away but was a fantastic player for India between 2013-2019 and a good player post that too. Would he walk into all the other country's ODI XI?

I think a current Dhawan would certainly walk into Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka XI. Probably Australia as well.
 
Clutch ICC tournament player. Due to low strike rate he lost his place. Tried too hard to find some form and in the process consumed too many balls. But he is more aggressive than Rohit/Gill in power play. He takes charge almost immediately. If he knows his spot is permanent you will see a different Dhawan.
 
In Pak he would be an ATG player
Aus would prolly have him if Head misses world cup
Eng wouldn't need him
In SA he would replace Bavuma as an upgrade
NZ would take him over Young

Rest 4 smaller teams he would likely captain as well
 
We sing praises of Fakhar in Pakistan and now compare Fakhar with Dhawan.

Fakhar's career would sink faster than Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad's and it's not even up for debate.
 
Not anymore, but in his prime he was the best ICC tournament player they had, even better than Rohit or Kohli.
 
The kind of support Kohli received, wish he would have an iota of the same. He always felt that his position was shaky, even after having a stellar career. I believe he was among the fastest to score 5 centuries, 5k runs etc. A clutch ICC tournament batter
 
He is certainly underrated cricketer .He should've been picked as a 3rd opener considering his brilliant record in icc event
 
Before Asia cup, I wanted him as opener and Gill at 3 or 4. I still think he should travel with team as reserve for WC. He can be good option if any opener gets injured like Dhawan himself in 2019 WC.

Dhawan is past it, totally. Strike rate is way too low for a modern ODI opener.

In Indian conditions he can be more than what he has been in recent times. In the IPL before getting injured he made 373 runs at an average of 42 and strike rate 142. There was one match where he single handedly put up a decent total with everyone else losing their wickets

Rankings don't count for much. A prime Shikhar Dhawan would easily replace Imam, so is it a stretch to say a slightly past his prime Shikhar Dhawan could still replace Imam, who still has technical deficiencies and a dot ball problem?
 
Last 2 years performances of openers in away conditions from India and Pakistan
Dhawan scores quickly in any format. Even in Tests. Unusually slow by his standard. But he did ligt up the IPL with some great innings this season. Peak form Dhawan is significantly better than Imam.

Never. Stats shows something else, dhawan ave 44 in ODIs and imam ave 50.
Technically imam is better than dhawan.

Things are looking different for both India and Pak after Asia cup and Ind-Aus series. Before that I had no trust in our middle order. No one was considering India a contender for final.

I am still doubtful of KL and Sky. Sky is unreliable and KL will score only if top order performs, when there is no pressure. At least once or twice our top order will fail. In a 2019 semi like situation KL won't perform. The guy can't handle pressure. That's why I thought Gill or Kohli at no 4 could be helpful. And Dhawan at top will do an okay job.

However things are looking good for now and I hope my worst fear doesn't turn into reality for next two months.

Stats aren't everything. Over the last couple of years Pakistan has feasted on weak teams playing on extremely flat tracks at home. This brought Pakistan to #1 and the top 3 in the top 10 of the batsmen rankings. Dhawan has significantly proved himself in various conditions and especially ICC tournaments. So, no, technically Imam is not better. This isn't even a rub against Imam. He's proven his place in the side through his performances. But let's not compare him to others who have been tested more rigorously and have performed. Stats don't always tell the full story
 
Shikhar Dhawan is better than most openers in the world.

However I always thought the Indians team just moved on from him as they were young promising openers. I mean it doesn't help that he's 37.

He may be clutch, but age would be a issue. Would be taken over Fakhar, Imam & Shafique.

Imam out of 65 innings only 5 innings have a strike rate over 100. That too between 100 and 115. No team is going to quack in their boots against such batsman. If anything they would want him to bat more.
 
As of now he wont get into any top 6 team, his str rate over the past couple of years has been really bad but in his prime he was amongst top 5 odi batters in world cricket and I rate him better than any Odi opener Pak or Sl has produced.A bit above Anwar in odis for me
 
Before I was 50/50, but the more I think about it, I would take him over Imam no question
 
Shikhar can walk in to any other current team as an opener except England. Better than any other current pak batsman except babar but that too is debatable.

That's a bit debatable though. Jayasuriya and Anwar vs Dhawan? I am not sure more people will go with Dhawan over those two. They are ODI greats.
 
I wouldn't take him right now, but in his prime better than any Pakistan opener that we have today.
 
He is now old. Not the same old Dhawan.

But, he should still make it to mid-tier and bottom-tier teams.

Dhawan on his last legs is miles ahead of Imam in his prime.

Dhawan is better than any ODI batsman that Pakistan has produced.

He was a bit apprehensive about losing his spot. So he unusually played a bit selfishly. But in the IPL we could see the old Dhawan. ALl those slow knocks always looked like purposeful as he became more and more insecure about his place. In IPL he doesn't have to worry about his spot as he was always a marquee player.

As far as I am concerned, top 5 Asian ODI openers :

Tendulkar
Rohit
Jayasuriya
Anwar
Ganguly

Then you have Dhawan, Gambhir, Dilshan, Sehwag, Fakhar etc in no particular order.

The problem with Dhawan in recent years was he'd gotten slow. Which put pressure on Rohit Sharma.

Dhawan on his normal day had no trouble striking 90+. Sad that he just faded away without a proper send-off. Always felt bad the way he never got to play the full 2019 WC too.

He still puts a smile on always, cheerful guy!

Dhawan has done very well in his ODI career. So have Inzy, Saeed Anwar and etc.

But what puts Dhawan well ahead of any Pakistani batsman in ODIs is his track record in ICC events.

2013 CT: Man of the tournament. Scored 363 runs in his 5 games at an average of 90 with a terrific strike rate of over 100. Second highest run scorer managed 229 runs. He was also the only player to score 2 x tons throughout the tournament.

2015 WC: India’s highest run scorer and one of the best batsman in the tournament. Averaged over 50 with a commendable strike rate of over 90.

2017 CT: Man of the tournament again. Also the highest run getter in the tournament. Averaged near 70 with a strike rate of over 100.

Let’s not forget Rohit Sharma and Kohli played in these tournaments as well and he still managed to outperform them in 3 x consecutive ODI tournaments.

Do you still rate Saeed Anwar above Dhawan?

As for your list of top 5 is concerned, I agree with your top 2 but Dhawan is number 3 for me.

I should also add. Dhawan was unlucky only to play 2 x matches in the last ODI WC. But even then he impressed. Scored a hundred and managed to make over 120 odd runs in these 2 games.

He always raised his game for the big occasions.
 
He would not only walk into the Pakistani side but he would also become the best player in the team
without any doubt.

Probably more on emotion, Both Jayasuriya and Anwar were below average in outside Asia, especially in big tournaments. I am not comparing average and s/r as the generation difference is there.

Tendulkar himself was below average outside Asia in 90s, every subcontinent batsman was. Things changed post 2003.
 
In our current ODI team? Easily

However if our actual best Xi was being selected than it would be hard for Dhawan who is past his prime to fit in as he would be competing with Shajreel, Saim, Omair Yusuf and Shan Masood, all of whom is feel are currently better than Dhawan with maybe the exception of Masood, however his tactical know how gives him a slight advantage

Interesting take, can u share some of the relevant stat? As Sachin was a middle-order batsman till early 90s ( maybe in a separate topic of discussion)

Dhawan was a big tournament player. Check his stats. Even big names from all round the world would love to have his stats in ICC tournaments.

He got dropped. But Rohit and Kohli are still playing. Not to forget KL Damaad still in the team.
