Assuming both teams played with their full allotment of overseas players. Would Islamabad United be able to defeat any one of the top teams in IPL?

Would be a fascinating contest!

Maybe if it's a one off game. Not if it's a 3 game series.

Little Lahore Lions (without overseas players etc) beat Mumbai Indians so they would definitely have a chance.

Lahore Lions XI that day:

Nasir Jamshed
Ahmed Shehzad
Mohammad Hafeez
Saad Nasim
Umar Akmal
Asif Raza
Umar Siddiq
Imran Ali
Aizaz Cheema
Adnan Rasool
Wahab Riaz

Mumbai Indians XI that day:

Lendl Simmons
Mike Hussey
Jalaj Saxena
Ambati Rayudu
A Tare
Kieron Pollard
Harbhajan Singh
Praveen Kumar
Lasith Malinga
Pragyan Ojha
Jaspit Bumrah

And this match was in India as well - I'm surprised no one talks about this match more often - that was amazing :)

IU have the batting firepower to even beat international sides.

Any team can beat any team.

Thats the beauty of sport and thats why its watched.

If strong teams always won in sport, we wouldnt have World Cups where a single moment of excellence by an individual or a bad day by a world class team can mean victory or defeat.

This applies to almost every sport not just cricket.

In a one-off game? sure.

If they play 10 games, one team is likely to win 7 out of 10.

It’s like India playing Zimbabwe. Yes Islamabad can win as upset do happen in sports.

I think it will be difficult for any team to beat United. United is filled with match winners. If you can get out Ronchi and JP you got Hales and Talat get them out you more great batsmen till like 10 or 11. They are one of the most balanced sides i have ever seen. They got incredible hitters in Ronchi, Hales, Asif, and Russal. They have players like JP and Talat who can play the anchor role and still be able to hit it our of the park when required. They got great spacers, there was an article on espncric revealing how Ruman Raees has been the best T20 bowler according to the stats. Of course they got world class spinners like Shadab, Patel, and Badree. Even their bench is super strong. They bat till 10 yet their bowling is still very good. So United is a super team, and it wont be easy beating them.

It will ultimately depend upon overseas Star players; will Russell play for IU if KKR win; similarly will Hales, Duminy, Sam billings play for IU or their respective IPL sides?

may you give me a link? i did not remember this match.

Anyone equating Islamabad United with Zimbabwe clearly hasn't watched PSL

Islamabad has a solid batting with Shadab at 10 and multiple quality bowling options.

That's the point. During champions league, the internationals mostly chose IPL.

You are one of those who watched IPL back in 2007 and haven’t watched single ball since then. Isnt it?

Would be a close game but I will back Islamabad especially if grandad is not playing for them.

Will depend where Rusell Billings Hales etc play.

I don't think you watched PSL cause ISLU benched these guys for most of the games. Ronchi and Duminy were the foreigners that constantly performed and were well supported by our local boys

Depends on the team, but would win some and are capable of winning a series if it was to be played

Islamabad.

IPL teams are bit diluted owing the the fact that Indian and overseas talent is divided amongst 8 teams.

If it were 6, IPL teams might have been more stronger..At least in theory.

Islamabad will be bundled below 70 runs
They have below club level batsman

The only foreigners who actually performed for Islamabad were Ronchi and Patel, and neither play in the IPL. As for the actual match, which IPL team is the strongest? KKR? CSK?

We must first know which teams would play before discussing such a question.

Islamabad will be tough to beat for any IPL team given their bowling attack being far superior to any in IPL.

They have wahab and Sami also, never underestimate them both are international discard

Lol. How did I forget these two great bowlers.

Now Bhaijaan really needs to answer this. how he came up with this conclusion that bowling line up consist of sumit, wahab and Sami being better than any of IPL bowling lineup.

Wahab doesn't even play for Islamabad and it's not like IPL doesn't have discarded players. Almost all of the local bowling in IPL are filled with the likes of Vinay Kumar and Ashok Dinda.

Yes easily even without international players but Isloo need to get rid of 45 year old captain who brings nothing to the side and is taking spot of a youngster.

Btw hats off to Isloo scouts for picking a team full of youngsters and not going on (social) media hype. Even a talent like Gohar couldn't find a place in playing X1.

A team can beat any team on their day but I guess we’re talking about potential here. Consider a team like the RCB. Look at their top 4. You can’t write off such a team even if the Almighty himself comes down to bowl.

Would they be able to win? Yes. How often? Not very often if we go by potential.

Comparing ISlamabasd to IPL team is like insulting IPL. First comparison should be between PSL and BPL winner.

lol Indians with their usual excuses. "you can only beat us in one off matches" ahaha. United is too good of a team to lose to teams that get hammered by tail-enders. United team is setup like Pakistan National team (NO. 1 team in the world), and i think it's better than Pak team. United is a perfect team when all players are fit. :isbunited

Wonder how the teams would fare without their foreign players? Would it even be attractive as a contest without the foreigners?

Their success was due to Luke Ronchi and Samit's & Sami's opening spell. Considering better spinner in IPL, Ronchi will be trapped and Samit will not be much effective against Indian batsman.

Mohammed Sami will take wickets but the wickets in IPL will not help much.

ISLU can win one off game but not a series. Anyway any team can win a T20 with momentum in their side.

Don't know who will win the IPL but IU is one heck of a team. Bowling strength is a given in PSL but IU bat all the way to 11 which was quite unheard of either in the PSL or in a Pakistani team.

Why cant they win a series? its T20 if they win one game they will probably win the series. All they need is one player to hit a big score and the team will rally around him. Its a proper team and can give any other domestic team a run for its money.

IU is a very strong team. They can beat any T20 team if they perform.
