Every1 has their opinion, I think 1 year ban “as the Aussie media is suggesting” should be the maximum punishment

David Warner will never play for Australia again regardless of the length of the ban. Word is that the players don't even want to share the hotel with him.

Hope they get banned for life. Its high time these arrogant Aussies had some poetic justice thrown their way.

The millions disgraced cricketers stand to lose

The lavish rock-star lifestyles of Australia's top cricket stars could be an unexpected casualty of the ball-tampering scandal engulfing the sport.

Australian team leaders Steve Smith and David Warner have stood down from the captain and vice-captain roles of the national team after rookie Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera meddling with the game ball.

Both collect massive paychecks through their performance on the field and endorsements off it, but this could now be jeopardised.

Griffith University's Dr Caroline Riot studies the mindset of elite athletes, and said she believed the multi-million dollar salaries could go to their heads.

"You know they live a great lifestyle, they are driving their Lamborghinis and living it up," she told A Current Affair.

However, she said they were "probably not" in touch with reality.

Smith and Warner both earn more than the highest-paid player in the AFL and in the NRL - combined.

Cricket Australia will announce tomorrow what punishments the players will receive.

Celebrity agent Max Markson said whatever the official consequences, both players could expect to lose millions in endorsements.

"It's just a line in the sand, corporations and companies can't be associated with cheaters," he said.

"They will lose every contract they have got. Every contract has a moral clause in it and they've breached their moral clause."

Dr Riot believes the path to redemption for Smith and Warner will lie on "bringing them back to earth".

"Get them back into volunteering or working at the community levels of sport," she said.

A number of Australia Test team players have asked their bosses to remove David Warner from the team hotel to prevent an "incident" occurring between them over the on-going ball-tampering scandal, Fox Sports Australia are reporting.

On their website, foxsports.com.au, the channel say they understand team-mates are "outraged" at Warner after he was seen swilling champagne in a hotel bar in Cape Town and he removed himself from the team Whatsapp group, amid the ongoing crisis.

Meanwhile, Australasian media company Fairfax, which owns the Sydney Morning Herald among other titles, are reporting that Warner is emerging as "the central character" in the ball-tampering crisis.

Cricket Australia (CA) have flown several representatives out to South Africa in an attempt to manage the furore, with chief executive James Sutherland expected to address the media from Johannesburg later on Tuesday.

The Daily Telegraph have reported that Darren Lehmann could quit as head coach, while captain Steve Smith, who admitted the ball-tampering plan that also involved Cameron Bancroft, may be stripped of the captaincy for good.

The Daily Mail report Smith and Warner, who once criticised South African Faf du Plessis for using a mint on a ball in 2006, could be banned for as long as a year by CA.

Dave Warner reported to have testified against the bowlers

For those of you outside Australia, in the last ninety minutes Fox Sports has reported a sensational twist to the Ball Tampering Affair.

We all know that originally Steve Smith told a hastily-assembled press conference that "the leadership group" decided to tamper with the ball at Cape Town.

That was widely considered to mean Smith, Warner, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon.

Over the last 24 hours, the three bowlers have made it very clear that they deny any involvement - although of course they would have handled the doctored ball (or balls if this is a repeat offence) more than anyone.

This evening the Brisbane Courier-Mail Cricket Correspondent Robert "Crash" Craddock has told Fox Sports' "The Back Page" show that:

1. All players apart from Smith, Bancroft and Warner have denied any involvement in or knowledge of ball tampering.

(Interesting process, whereby you investigate a crime by asking people whether or not they did it).

2. Hazlewood, Starc and Lyon have expressed anger at being implicated by Smith as members of the "leadership group".

3. The same players have complained that Warner drank champagne with outside friends at the Cullinan Hotel in Cape Town, and have ejected him from the team's What's App group.

4. Warner has given evidence to the Integrity Commissioner and High Performance Manager that Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon were active participants in the ball tampering decision.

This is not good for Cricket Australia. These new jokers, especially Warner ruining alot for a proud cricket nation.

How is exposing the bowlers ruining the proud nation?

No doubt they were in on it too.

The Way Warner is carrying on he will be lucky to play cricket again

When I started this thread, the question I initially asked was "Would you have any sympathy if David Warner is banned for life?"

Obviously the vast majority of people will have sympathy knowing Steven Smith's name is also in the mix. Warner alone deserves no sympathy whatsoever!

I think cricket Australia is trying to salvage Smith's career and is throwing Warner under the bus.Warner is the ring leader and Smith foolishly agreed. Come on.. Smith is the captain of the national team. How could he not know.
They are targeting Warner unfairly just like England did with KP to cover their failures.

At the moment, I think Warner is adamant to take everyone down with him. He isnt going to lose his career when others who were involved are still playing for Australia

I am takling about the bowlers as well. Pointed out Warner because he is involved in almost every controversy.

He should do that.He should threaten to expose brain fade controversy in detail and earlier incidents also.Aussies cricketers value their baggy green more than anything. He will go down fighting.

Exactly.

Warner may be obnoxious, but he may well be the only player not lying to the investigators.

So the others have scapegoated him, apparently too desperate to save themselves to understand that if he is punished and they are not, he will tell the media his story.

Leaving the team's whatsapp group means he is clearly annoyed with his team mates wants to distance himself with them.

I have a feeling we could see Starc and Hazlewood in big trouble too. If Warner tells the authorities they are involved then who is to say they are not? All signs indicate that Starc and Hazlewood knew that they are working with an out of shape ball

if this turns out to be true ... these guys have the maturity levels of High School kids :)))

One thing ive learnt about the Aussies in this whole scenario...

They all act tough, macho and follow a bro code until things turn extremely sour! The moment Bancroft is caught on camera, he cr*ps his pants and does a stupid thing on camera again. The Moment Smith knows that the world will know that he put Bancroft upto this, he also panics and just admits to his mistake, also throwing the leadership group under the bus. The moment the leadership group (embodied in the form of David Warner) know their days are numbered, Warner goes all out and snitches on his team-mates and bowlers! Clearly these guys were never homies, brothers!

Some may call Hansie a criminal for withholding names of team mates to the police and the media. However one thing is for sure, the guy was not a snitch, he didnt scr*w the lives of guys who got away with it!

Are we to Respect Hansie more than Warner and Smith? Maybe not in a gentleman's world, however too much respect for Hansie in the streets of COMPTON!

Can we arrange a quick one-Test Ashes series in April so we can get the urn back? Even our crap team could beat the Aussies suffering internal capitulation and with no Steve Smith

Smith will be reduced to the ranks. Warner will probably not be picked by Australia again.

Australia should definitely hand the Ashes back though.

Stuart Broad's 160 against Pakistan at lords should be erased from the history books also ;)

There was something deeply odd about the field placing that day. It was just so easy for Broad to keep hitting fours.

Not happening this Life Ban and to be fair, it should not be that. Just the shame will be enough

Whereas I do feel that a one year ban is incredibly harsh, as its the aussie clique, I dont feel very sorry for them. Particularly David Warner, Jonothan Trott summed it up nicely on his twitter account saying "Goodbye David"......What does this tell you.

Warner was the main culprit. As per news, Smith won't be captaining anytime for 12 months after the ban while Warner will never ever captain in future.

Life ban would have been too harsh - one year I think is more than enough. I infact won’t have banned for 1 year, may be 6 months and severe monitory penalties. Already guys have lost in millions from the ban and they are surely not the only one in masterminding the “act”.

One year is satisfactory enough as includes all sorts of cricket - only regreat that Lehman could blackmail CA to his way out with clean chit.

Someone spot-fixing and getting a 5-year ban is fine but someone cheating by trying to change the shape of the ball and getting a one year ban is too harsh?

FYI...Spot-fixing will NOT affect the result of the match but ball tempering could.

It's high time the ICC and the individual boards stand up against corruption by setting up examples.

I think Smith and Bancroft are committed Aussies who will want to come back and rebuild their careers, however I would not be surprised if Warner now stuck his middle finger up at CA and became one of these stateless journeyman T20 mercenary types to maximise his late career earnings.

Steve Smith is a cheater no doubt but life time ban for Ball tamparing is surely too much.. Some countries allowed their players to return even after fixing scandals and we are talking about this non sense. One year ban is too much for this offense .
Steven Smith may be the proven cheater but he is also one of the precious players of this generation.

I always did have sympathy for Smith. He's not a serial offender. It's Warner who I have no sympathy for. The guy does his best to buy sympathy in Public now. But I've lost a lot of respect for this guy. Really should not have crossed the line this series in all ways

Spot-fixing is a federal crime and gives external parties the ability to influence games (i.e. play out maiden overs). It has repercussions beyond the sport itself.

Ball tampering isn't comparable.

I didn't have any sympathy at first but seeing the way Smith cried definitely changed my stance. We have lost the best test batsman of this generation to a scandal that blew up way too much because of the tabloids and the reaction of the public. Sad times ahead.

that is a ridiculous way of thinking. In one, u r selling ur country for personal benefits. In other, u r cheating for an unfair advantage in a game.

I dont think they need to be banned for life. I even think banning for 1 year is a bit much. Steve Smith needs to come back as he is the best batsman IMO and I think there's a mastermind behind this - lehmann.
But I dont have any sympathy for Warner. For all things, Steve Waugh has described the Aussie teams as someone who played hard and left it on the field. Seems like Warner continues it beyond the field as well with his punching Root, sledging Bairstow about his father committing suicide, his sledging on twiitter for god's sake, acting tough vis-a-vis DeKock. Looks like he has a bad case of napoleon syndrome. And he hasnt been performing well.
