Hi all! This is my first post on PakPassion after being a lurker for about two years.

I wanted to get an opinion from people who have watched cricket over a long period of time, especially those who have seen Shane Warne in his prime and hopefully even Abdul Qadir. I have only been properly following cricket since 2015, so my knowledge isn't as extensive as others on this subject.

Yasir Shah is probably my favourite bowler right now (bar maybe Hasan) and he is without a doubt Pakistan's best test bowler atm and probably the best leg spinner in test cricket. I'm intrigued to see how people compare him to the other greats of leg spin such as Warne, Qadir, Kumble, etc. Obviously its still fairly early days for him and he has not reached the heights of those great names as of yet, but following his current curve, you would've thought he will reach a fair amount of test wickets. I understand that to be an ATG he needs to be performing in all formats and it is very unlikely he will get his chance in the ODIs due to the brilliance and youth of Shadab, so I am talking purely from a test format perspective.

The obvious blip in his record is his away form, particularly in Oceania. Others have struggled there but an average of 92 is nothing to boast about. His numbers in England aren't fantastic either, but he does suffer from being ridiculously over-bowled and without a support spinner these days - although these are just excuses. In terms of pure stats he is averaging 29.44 with a SR of 56.2. His average is better than Kumble and Qadir's but not better than Warne's but astonishingly, his SR is better than all of theirs. You would look at this and see the amount of wickets he's taken in his 28 tests and say that he is on his way to becoming one of the greatest leg spinners ever. Furthermore, even though he's 31, his late entry into international cricket may aid him in this, and with Pakistan's nature with older players he could easily play for another 6/7 years. We have Shadab who is very young and raw in test cricket, and I do believe we should wait a while for him to be playing regular test cricket. Regular FC and LOI cricket is more important for him atm. However Shadab, along with other young spinners, will hopefully push Yasir to maintain his high performance levels. Furthermore the lack of test cricket we play will hurt Yasir I feel in getting close to these greats.

Having said all of that, cricket is not a game based on stats. So I ask people with knowledge of previous great leggies and how their game was 28 test matches in. How does Yasir shape up against the great leg spinners. Is he a modern day great, overrated or somewhere in between?

Thanks

If there was no Yasir Shah there would'nt have been any test victories post-Ajmal ban. Ajmal removal from Pakistan team was the biggest victory for those who wanted Pakistan cricket to finish and pushed behind. Yasir Shah came and filled the void carrying an isolated Pakistan to victories single-handedly. His stats speak for him, but the stats don't show how crucial was Yasir Shah in helping Pakistan bowling to survive and even win in tough times.

Welcome to PP. Yasir is a match winner and well on his way to becoming a modern great when he sorts out his stats overseas.

Nice post... Welcome to PP.
Coming to the topic...
Modern Day Great....
Will soon become Pakistan’s ATG
and will be among the GOATs if and if he plays for 6 more years with same performances or almost same performances and maintain his fitness.

He's Pakistan's best test player. He'll end up a Pakistani great at least for sure.

Honestly I feel like his average isn't representative of his impact. He pretty much has carried our bowling attack. Feel like his figures are hurt too due to him often being used to give breaks to the fast bowlers, and often is overloaded because no one else is making things happen. We saw even where the fast bowlers should have dominated in England, it was Yasir who stepped up when it counted to win us those matches.

Very good bowler but slightly overrated like most other good players.

Will go down as a better test bowler than Ajmal or Saqlain.

Pakistani bowling is Yasir or Zero for all practical purposes when it comes to influencing the game. Clearly, you are going to have many in PP who will over rate him.

Having said that, Qadir went down as Pakistani great despite averaging around 50 outside of Pakistan. I don't see why Yasir will not go down as a Pakistani great. Yasir will surely do well in UAE.

He's only done poor against AUS. He took 10 wickets in 2 matches to win 1-0 in BD and 19 wickets on his first tour of ENG and helped to draw the series 2-2. As for NZ, he was only bowled in 1 innings and that too not enough to draw a conclusion.

What is his average against same teams in UAE and outside of UAE? With a larger sample size, average vs opposition may not look so lopsided.

He's lost initial bounce and zip in his bowling. He used to focus on ripping leg-breaks when he made his debut but 2 years under Misbah have replaced that with defensive, wicket-to-wicket deliveries. The back injury that hasn't healed 100% doesn't help either and the massive workload. I mean what other spinner bowls 40 overs in the first innings?

he has not played against South Africa and India yet?

He's the best test spinner in the world. If he can hold onto this tag for a few more years, he'll go down as a great bowler.

he has not played against South Africa and India yet?

Of course. Pakistan last played tests against those two countries when Yasir was still at the FC level.

Herath is the best at the moment Yasir is second overall above average in tests but not great.

How was he in domestic before debut? Was he robbed off some good years by Ajmal?

He is a pitch dependent bowler. Until he shows adaptability to non-turning wickets, it will be difficult to consider him a great. His five-wicket haul at The Oval is his best performance to date. If he learns to replicate that sort of flight, dip and drift, he will be a threat anywhere.

No, Shah is better. Herath in his prime was better but he's on his last legs now.

Yasir shah is an over rated - going to be a - modern day great

He's a late bloomer on the international stage so he still has a bit to do to prove himself- if he manages two successful tours of Oz/Eng/NZ/SA then I think he will be an atg as he will have proven he can play in all conditions. Just one good tour of those four, then at least he gets in the conversation.

In an ideal world he'll do that, plus get to play a test series or two at his true home on Pakistan soil before he retires in 5 years or so. That would be an atg alongside Kumble type career, who I have a lot of respect for.

Question for Pakistani fans- what does Yasir have to do to surpass Qadir?

Statistically, he will easily pass Qadir. In that regard, his competition is Mushy who has well rounded stats and performances everywhere. It's difficult to accurately judge Qadir because players from his era say he was denied a lot of wickets because of the style of umpiring in his days. The eye test is in accordance with what they say because of his great skillset and control over a variety of deliveries.

Hard to beat the first innings lord's spell

He is wicket-taker in Asian conditions, but he is not good enough overseas. People talk about the two matches in England, but the pitches favored him and England played some reckless cricket against him. He really cost the team big time with his abject performances at Old Trafford, Edgbaston and in NZ and Australia.

The problem with Yasir - and that is a function of him being a leg-spinner - is that he is not unable to stem the flow of runs unless he can take wickets.

He was whooped in Australia like no tomorrow, and it was one of the major reasons why we were not able to draw a single game, even though we managed to punch above our weight with the bat quite a few times. This is where someone like Ashwin and Jadeja have an edge on him. They need turning pitches to take wickets, but they do not get smashed on non-friendly pitches.

Ashwin was able to keep it tight in Australia and it helped India draw a couple of games. I would rank Yasir below Ashwin and Jadeja as a Test spinner. He is good but not exceptional as he is portrayed to be.

We also have to understand that it is somewhat understandable that he is overrated on PP. Firstly, 80% of the posters here are Pakistani so you will be hard-pressed to find a single Pakistani player who is not overrated to a certain extent, and secondly, he is the only wicket-taker in the Test team which means that our incompetent bowlers make him look better than he is, and he ends up taking more wickets because he doesn't have to share the spoils.

Bring in a couple of wicket-takers or another wicket-taking spinner and Yasir will not stand-out to the same extent. Any wicket-taking spinner will look like a world beater in the current Pakistani Test team especially in Asian conditions. You can replace him with Ashwin, Jadeja and even Tahir in the current Pakistani Test bowling unit and they will look better than they are, and they will take more wickets as well.

Herath is pretty much in the same boat. He is a good spinner but he is looking better than he is because he is the only good bowler that Sri Lanka have in Tests. However, he is better than Yasir outside Asia, who is a match-loser in those conditions unless he gets assistance from the pitch, and that is when he turns into a match-winner.

Watched him take 10 wickets at Lord's in person and he was truly mesmerizing during those 4 days. On the flip side, he was hammered all over the park in Australia a few months later. Thus, I would be loth to label him a modern great. He's very good though and Pakistan are lucky to have him.

somewhere in between

Hampered by dodgy tactics and overreliance on him by the captain.

If he wins us another test overseas like he did in England, then we can get him to great status.

I never could understand the lines he bowled against Australia in Australia. Was it Misbah who was feeding him info to bowl those negative line or was it just him.

Needs a few seasons of county or something without Mushtaq being around. I think he's relied too much on him and needs the confidence to go out and do it himself. He needs to understand his strengths and be attacking. He got spanked in Australia because of bowling a horrible line and you just can't expect him to bowl 40 overs each innings. Maybe needs a second full-time spinner in the bowling line up to share the load.

a good overseas tour and many pp experts will be sillent then,,but of course he has been ordinary in nz and AUS...already a pak ATG in progress.

If we are to compare him to Shane Warne, one thing is for sure. Yasir Shah is not 'the larger than life' figure. He is just a cricketer on and off the field. Doesnt have the charisma off nor on it to become a modern great at the moment

The biggest issue on Shah is the workload, half the time he is carrying the team on his own in test matches and in a crisis situation the man has always delivered, specially in the last few overs of the day with the test match hanging by the thread.

I have an issue with the 3-1 bowling formula, we need batsmen who can bowl. Shah needs a support spinner as well. Enough with this 3-1 and one of the pacers being Mohammad Amir, who has gone wicketless the most by any bowler in the past 1 year.

Yasir Shah is still not there to be called as best Pakistani Test Spinner. But he has very good chance to earn that claim in future.
He has the best strike rate on all 3 table.

Hard to beat the first innings lord's spell

Oval was a flat pitch. Lord's was holding up a bit. This is based on the quality of bowling rather than the number of wickets taken. Yasir was turnt up for that spell. IIRC there was some trash talk prior to the 2nd innings.

Agree with this summary broadly. Good but not great. Unlikely to ever be ATG, but could be very good, like Kimble level but not Warne or Murali.

May not end up an ATG but will be an ATG in our hearts as Pakistan fans.

Champion bowler

Yasir helped Pakistan win 2 tests in England on his first tour. Just because he had a horrible Australian tour does not make him a bad bowler.

He might not retire as an ATG but in my opinion, he's already a Pakistani great.

Thanks

Yasir is a good bowler who is doing pretty well at the moment.. I havent watched Abful qadir but O have watched warne in his prime. And Yasir stands no where when it comes to skills. Warne was way too fierce and competitive which Yasir does lack a lot. Also Shane warne had a great control over his line and length which Yasir lacks at times.

Good bowler but not great. To be honest I don't think he'll ever succeed in Australia/South Africa unless he gets absolutely batting duds there. To be effective he needs pitches to help him which is not a trait for an all time great Test bowler. I wouldn't even rate him ahead of Saeed Ajmal right now despite Yasir's superior numbers.

Also from watching Yasir over the past 3 years, never once have I gotten the feeling that he sets up a batsman to get him out. We shouldn't even be anywhere near mentioning Warne alongside Yasir because Warne was on a different level altogether. The way he used to out think batsmen was superb to watch. Yasir doesn't even set up his own field for starters!!! He mostly agrees to whatever field the captain has set for him.

For me in order to make that transition from being a good bowler to a great one, he needs to take wickets in unhelpful conditions all the time. We berate Ashwin for being a home-track bully, but we ignore Yasir's away from the subcontinent performances. He got two bone-dry pitches at Lords and Oval and he made full use of it which should be applauded but he got absolutely hammered at Old Trafford where the pitch didn't suit him. However, Yasir has time on his side and he has the potential to grow. Hopefully he does for Pakistan's sake. At home, he's a great bowler no doubt!!!
