Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has slammed England all-rounder Moeen Ali for his recent comments criticising the 'horrible' scheduling in international cricket. Ali called out the tight schedule after England defeated Pakistan in the final to win the T20 World Cup 2022 title on Sunday (November 13).

England are already gearing up for their next international assignment in less than a week after playing the T20 World Cup 2022 final as they will take on Australia in a three-match ODI series starting from Thursday (November 17). England players have a break of just three days before they return to action once again post the recently-concluded World Cup.

Calling out the packed schedule, Ali said it becomes difficult for the players to give their hundred percent in every game if they have to play so frequently with no time for rest and recovery.

"Having a game in three days' time, it's horrible. But it's better than two days' time. If it had rained on Sunday, it would have been two days (if the reserve day came into play)," Ali said after England's T20 World Cup triumph.

"As players, we're kind of getting used to it now. But to give 100 percent all the time is difficult when you're playing every two, three days," he added.

Moeen further pointed out how it was the same situation after England had won the ODI World Cup in 2019 as the team had little time to celebrate with their next assignment lined up shortly after the tournament. The England star said it's a shame that they don't have enough time to celebrate their T20 World Cup victory.

"Those kind of things are a shame. As a group we want to enjoy and celebrate and have that [time] because you put so much into it. It's not just while the tournament is going on, there's the pre-tournament, the build-up and all that," said Moeen.

Clarke slammed Ali for his comments on the international schedule and said nobody would have raised questions had their been an Indian Premier League (IPL) season line up after the T20 World Cup.

The former Aussie skipper pointed out its the players' choice on whether they want to play franchise cricket or not and they could use the time for rest and recovery rather than plying their trade in domestic T20 leagues.

"If it was playing in the T20 World Cup and then the next day get on a plane to depart for the IPL, I don’t think you’d hear anybody whinge.

"Players can’t complain about the international schedule when they’re taking opportunity to play domestic cricket as well for franchises for money when you can have that six or eight weeks off. Then you’d be as fresh as a daisy. I’ve obviously found that very hard," said Clarke.

Fair point. Players are happy to be paid big and play every other day for 6 weeks but heaven forbid your country asks the same. MA getting a proper slap

Mo is a bit of a whinger.

Every statement is a moan of some sort.

And Clarke is 100% right to call him out here.

The scheduling these days can give Cricket Boards the opportunity to field seperate teams, test their bench strength so that players are adequately rested and player burn out is avoided and also players are kept on their toes that they are replaceable.

I agree with Clarke's point overall.

But Moeen has a valid case here, playing yet another T20I just 3 days after winning the T20 WC....it's hard to motivate yourself for these games

After a t20 final they should at least get two weeks off. They should be able to relax a little.

Moeen is always crying. He can’t help himself. The comments are also ill-timed.

England have just won a World Cup, everyone is celebrating. Now is not the time to moan about scheduling.

Besides, it is just a 3 match series. He will not die if he plays these 3 ODIs.

More importantly, he is not all-format player for England anymore. He has already chickened out of Tests, so he has no right to complain about workload and scheduling.

Laughable entitlement. Clarke did well to take him to task.

But Boards have TV commitments. If the IPL was starting in 3 days, would MA be complaining, no chance

Leagues are spreading. Now SA has come up with leagues. Maybe they should restrict T20 just to leagues. Either that or every country has to come up with 2 separate teams to manage the workload. England sure can come up with a completely different team for T20Is.

League cricket - you are playing for yourself. You don't represent England.
International cricket - you are representing your country.

No comparison here. Moeen Ali has made close to 2 million USD for the years 2021 and 2022. Michael Clarke himself makes half a million for each IPL edition. This is professional cricket. So there is no way they will question the schedule. Clarke knows it :) Not just IPL, Moeen Ali won't question county cricket either. International cricket schedules are way more flexible than these leagues because in a bilateral only two teams get involved. IN league cricket you have players from so many countries playing. Each player may have preference. IPL can't or won't accommodate.

The inspirational World Champion has spoken, he is spot on here, can’t run players into the ground, this will force them to pick and choose formats which you don’t want

Moeen has a point, they just won a WC.

A couple weeks break after a high stakes campaign is not a big ask

He's right in that something has to give in terms of scheduling. Franchise cricket is the future and those of us who are not on board with that, including Michael Clarke , need to accept the reality.

3 formats + ICC event every year + multiple leagues is just not sustainable. He maybe a mediocre choker buy he's not wrong here.

Clarke is right and Moeen has no right to complain. They get the option to choose not to play franchise. Besides, hasn't Moeen retired from Test, t20 cricket doesnt require that much effort.

It's always funny hearing retired cricketers give moral lectures to current players about keeping their priorities in international cricket, when they themselves played league cricket or Kerry Packer circus.

Moeen has become Buttler's lieutenant so has license to speak. Almost on behalf of the team

I agree with Moeen here. Who plays a 3 match JAMODIs just 4 days after WT20? Players are not machines. They have lives and family as well outside cricket. It is very easy for Michael Clarke to say all these things now who during his playing days used to skip series even with the bat of an eyelid.

And that age old tactics of drawing parallel with IPL by jealous ex players is getting tiresome now. It is no secret than IPL offers money which international cricket can never do. So there is extra initiative from players to participate in IPL than JAMODIs. Nothing new that Michael Clarke is saying.

And people want this mediocre moaner to be the captain. What a joke.

He should thank his lucky stars that he still has the opportunity to represent England in ODIs after what he did at the 2019 World Cup.

Buttler and ECB see him as a leader and that's what matters.
