Pakistan is marking the 22nd anniversary of successfully conducting nuclear tests today.

On this day in 1998, responding to Indian nuclear tests, Pakistan carried out five successful tests of its own in Chaghi, Balochistan followed by another one on May 30th in Kharan.

Each year, the day, Youm-e-Takbeer is celebrated to commemorate the historic day when the country conducted the nuclear tests in 1998 as a response, in self-defence, to the nuclear tests and accompanying hostile posturing by its neighbour India.

After the tests were conducted successfully, Pakistan became the seventh nation in the world to possess nuclear weapons and the first Islamic country to do so.

On the occasion, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif, said, “Salute to Nawaz Sharif as no complexity and no sacrifice could come in his way to serve the nation and none will God willing shall become an obstacle in his endeavours.”

She added that Youm-e-Takbeer reminds us every year of Sharif’s allegiance to the land; the tale that started with loyalties and culminates with fake sentences.

“Ask each and every atom of the land and every drop of flowing waters of the rivers that it was who, decorated this orchard, made the frontiers and airs of the country invincible. And it was who, after sacrificing everything is still honouring his commitments with the nation and will continue to do so,” Maryam added.

Luckily we built up nuclear capabilities at a good time, a project that was boosted by the 1971 humiliation.

If we didn’t back then, our PM would now be setting up a ‘nuclear bomb account’ and requesting people to donate money like he does for every project or initiative.

Inshallah Project Azm will also be a deadly surprise for humsaya mulk just like the nuke test.

I find it a bit odd that countries celebrate the anniversary of things like this.

I was in Calcutta when this happened and local Muslims actually celebrated this wildly. Asked a few guys and was told that they felt safe because Pakistan could now stand up to India and the Muslims there were safe which meant they were safe as well. That day ai knew the importance of Pakistan :)

So Indian Muslims consider Pakistan as their " Baap " who will come to their rescue? :))

Since where it is mentioned "Baap and will come to their rescue?

What shall I interpret from the statement that " Since Pakistan is safe we are safe " ? Means a Nuclear Pakistan will ensure safety of Muslims on both sides of the border. Pakistani side yes but why Indian side?

why would Muslims in India celebrate that Pakistan has acquired nukes? Do they see Pakistan as a saviour or an enemy country?

Indian Muslims have decided after independence at what place they have to stay so that only matters.

But as you can see a Muslim from India is bragging about how fellow Muslims from places as far as Calcutta were celebrating nuclear achievements of Pakistan then questions have to be asked for clarification.

What is this baap beta stuff, are u sehwag? Pakistan's nukes were a very big thing for Muslims all over the world as they were the first Muslim country to get them IIRC, plus the communal riots of '46 live on in the memory of the Muslims of Calcutta.

Celebrating the potential of causing thousands of deaths and untold suffering.

I hope one day we as species will move on from such barbarism.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday accused nuclear-armed India of risky behaviour for toying with dangerous military concepts, but assured the world that it (Pakistan) would continue to act with restraint and responsibility.

“The flawed notion of establishment of a ‘new normal’ and fantasies of ‘punishing Pakistan’ while remaining below the threshold of a nuclear conflict demonstrate irresponsible and dangerous behaviour by India,” Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said at a webinar, while referring to the Feb 2019 post-Pulwama stand-off.

The webinar was organised by the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) to commemorate the nuclear tests conducted by Pakistan on this day in 1998.

Mr Qureshi’s remarks came in the backdrop of high running tensions between the two arch rival neighbours. Ceasefire violations and allegations of cross-LoC infiltration by India have escalated the situation.

The foreign minister said India’s illegal annexation of Occupied Kashmir last August added to volatility in the region. “The irresponsible statements made by senior members of the BJP government, including on nuclear issues and threats of dismemberment, leave little doubt about the reckless mind-set at work,” he added.

The security situation resulting from “hegemonic ambitions of a larger neighbor under the rule of an ultra-nationalist and revisionist regime”, he said, does not allow Pakistan to lower its guard.

He emphasised Islamabad’s desire for peace saying Yaum-i-Takbeer observance reminds us about Pakistani quest for peace and its resolve to defend its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.

Mr Qureshi said that ‘credible minimum deterrence’ would remain the guiding principle of Pakistan’s nuclear posture and reiterated Islamabad’s pledge to stay away from regional arms race.

“Pakistan has demonstrated its commitment to peace and stability by putting forward the proposal for a Strategic Restraint Regime (SRR). Yet our desire for peace should not leave anyone in doubt regarding our capability and will to defend ourselves effectively against any form of aggression,” he maintained.

The foreign minister recalled Pakistan’s growing technological prowess and offered cooperation with other countries in civilian nuclear application. He said Pakistan wanted to expand its high technology exports.

He said Pakistan vast experience and expertise, which could be used for attainment of Sustainable Development Goals.

Pakistan 'most improved' country in nuclear security: watchdog

Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a leading US non-proliferation watchdog, has ranked Pakistan as the most improved in security of those countries holding nuclear materials, improving its overall score by seven points.

“Pakistan’s improvements in the Security and Control Measures category are significant because strengthened laws and regulations result in durable boosts in Pakistan’s score as well as provide sustainable security benefits,” the watchdog said in its annual report.

The NTI Nuclear Security Index is a public benchmarking project of nuclear security conditions on a country-by-country basis in 176 countries.

Laura E Kennedy, a retired United States career diplomat, also commended Pakistan’s improvement in security ranking.

“One welcome bit of news reported by #NTIindex is that #Pakistan ranked as most improved in security of those countries holding nuclear materials,” she said in a tweet.

The report stated that the majority of Pakistan’s improvements are in the Security and Control Measures category because of its passage of new regulations. The country also improved in the Global Norms category.

It said that Pakistan improved its score with the passage of time with eight points in 2014, two in 2016, and six in 2018 owing to new regulations for on-site physical protection.

“In 2016, it passed new cyber security regulations. In 2018, it improved its insider threat protections. Its newest regulations mark a much larger shift.”

The report further stated that Pakistan’s score improvement for regulatory measures is the second largest improvement for regulations in the Index since 2012.

Among countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials, Australia ranked first for the fifth time. It also ranks first in the sabotage ranking for the third time. Despite its repeated position at the top of the ranking, Australia continues to better its score, improving by +1 in both rankings.

The report stated that among countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials, Canada and Switzerland tie for second, Germany is fourth, and the Netherlands and Norway tie for fifth.

Among countries with nuclear facilities in the sabotage ranking, Canada, Finland, and the United Kingdom rank second, third, and fourth, respectively, and Germany and Hungary are tied for fifth.

New Zealand and Sweden tie for first in the theft ranking for countries without weapon-usable nuclear materials, followed by Finland (third), Denmark and South Korea(tied for fourth), and Hungary and Spain (tied for sixth).

first for the fifth time with the best nuclear security conditions among the 22 countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials and for the third time in the sabotage ranking of 46 countries and Taiwan that have nuclear facilities at which an act of sabotage would could result in a dangerous release of radiation.

In the ranking for 153 countries and Taiwan without materials, New Zealand and Sweden tie for first.

india and pakistan can instead invest the billions in uplifting the lifestyle of common ppl, provide quality education, infrastructure. nuclear war ain’t happening. Foolish way of wasting money

If Pakistan did not have nukes, there is a good chance they could have been turned into Libya, Syria, Yemen, Iraq. Its a necessary deterrent.

Nuclear weapon is a very useful thing to have for any country. It ensures other countries don't mess with you.

Nation celebrates 26th Youm-e-Takbeer today

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Youm-e-Takbeer, the celebration of Pakistan’s atomic explosions in 1998, is being observed today (Tuesday) with a pledge to make the country economically and militarily strong.

The day is commemorated every year on May 28 to remember the conduction of nuclear tests on the very day, in 1998, making seventh nuclear nation of the world and first Islamic state equipped with nuclear arsenal.

Pakistan had conducted nuclear tests in Rasko hills of Chaghi district of Balochistan in response to five nuclear explosions conducted by India, threatening the security of Pakistan.

These nuclear tests gave a clear message to the world that despite Pakistan is a peace loving country but it cannot ignore its defence needs and is capable of meeting any challenge.

Detonation of nuclear devices on May 28, 1998 was culmination of a daring journey took on by Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto to make the nation’s defence invincible against the arch rival India.

The programme was started though with limited resources but insurmountable will and passion to ensure that the country becomes a sovereign and strong state unable to be bullied by the hostile powers.

Dreams of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto as well as the nation came true in 1998 when the then Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif stood firm against all threats to include Pakistan in the nuclear club by detonating device at Chagai.

It was the will and determination of our nation and the leadership that removed all hurdles on way to achieving this milestone.

There was also a hidden force behind this achievement and a great hero of nation Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan who with his unflinching resolve and commitment fought out all threats to the nation and his own life.

President Ziaul Haq was also less to none in taking forward the nuclear program initiated by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and despite all reservations, the nation cannot ignore his contribution.

GOVT ANNOUNCES PUBLIC HOLIDAY

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday declared public holiday on May 28 to mark Youm-e-Takbeer, a day when Pakistan’s defence became impregnable after nuclear tests in the hills of Chagai, Balochistan.

Youm-e-Takbeer reminds the Pakistani nation of unity to make the defence of the country invincible, the prime minister said in a statement issued by the PM House.

He said on this day in 1998, the entire nation decided for the integrity of the country, that there would be no compromise by accepting any external pressure on national defence.

He said Youm-e-Takbeer was the day of renewing pledge to always thwart the nefarious designs of the external as well as internal enemies who want to endanger the country through their chaotic politics.

“This is also the day of paying tributes to the measures taken by then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Army to making the national defence invincible.

Youm-e-Takbeer will be fervently observed today (Tuesday) in remembrance of nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998 that made the defence of the country invincible.

The day made Pakistan the seventh nuclear nation of the world and the first Muslim state having the nuclear arsenal in its defense stockpile to exercise maximum deterrence for peaceful purposes.

Resisting the mounting external pressures, the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif went for the bold decision to test the Pakistani nukes and thus balancing the strategic slanting power in the region.

On Youm-i-Takbeer, PM and acting president hail nation’s ‘unwavering determination’ under ‘bold leadership’

As the nation observed Youm-i-Takbeer on Tuesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Acting President Yusuf Raza Gilani hailed the nation’s “unwavering determination” to make Pakistan a nuclear power under the “bold leadership” of then-premier Nawaz Sharif.

Youm-i-Takbeer is observed on May 28 to commemorate the historic day in 1998 when Pakistan joined the ranks of nuclear powers after atomic tests in the hills of Chagai, Balochistan.

A day ago, PM Shehbaz had declared today a public holiday across the country on account of Youm-i-Takbeer.

In his message, the prime minister said May 28 “encapsulates the narrative of our nation’s arduous yet remarkable path towards establishing a credible minimum deterrence”.

“On this historic day in 1998, [then-] PM Nawaz Sharif demonstrated bold leadership by rejecting nerve-wracking pressures and inducements to make Pakistan a nuclear-armed nation,” he wrote in a post on X.

The premier also paid tribute to ex-PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who he said was the “founder of Pakistan’s nuclear programme for his strategic foresight and unwavering commitment to the cause”.

“This significant day symbolises the collective effort of all facets of national power, overcoming what seemed like an insurmountable challenge and achieving a milestone in our country’s defence capabilities,” PM Shehbaz asserted.

Acting president Gilani said Youm-i-Takbeer served as a “testament to our nation’s resilience, unwavering determination and commitment to maintaining regional peace and stability”.

Calling the day a “pivotal moment in our history”, Gilani noted that the “journey to becoming a nuclear state was not without its difficulties”.

“Our leadership and scientists braved various challenges to achieve this remarkable feat,” he said, acknowledging the hard work of scientists and engineers “without whom this achievement would not have been possible”.

Gilani highlighted that Bhutto’s “efforts led to making Pakistan a nuclear state” and also appreciated former premier Benazir Bhutto’s “decision as the opposition leader of the time to support Mian Nawaz Sharif for conducting nuclear tests”.

“Indeed, it was the collective determination of our civil and military leadership as well as our scientific acumen, and unwavering dedication to national defence that propelled us forward,” Gilani emphasised.

“Pakistan, as a responsible nuclear state, firmly believes in the peaceful resolution of conflicts. We are also strictly adhering to international standards, and have implemented stringent controls and comprehensive safety measures to safeguard our nuclear assets,” the acting president said.

He added that Pakistan remained “committed to maintaining Credible Minimum Deterrence, preserving the balance of power and deterring aggression”.

“Nuclear deterrence stands as a cornerstone of stability in South Asia, and we remain steadfast in our resolve to uphold this principle,” Gilani stated, calling Pakistan’s strategic capability a “powerful deterrent and a weapon for peace”.

He renewed Pakistan’s pledge to “continue working toward a peaceful and stable world”. “Let’s draw inspiration from this success and work together to make the country’s defence impregnable through technological and economic advancements,” the acting president said.

Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza and services chiefs also felicitated the nation on Youm-i-Takbeer, Radio Pakistan reported.

In a statement, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the armed forces paid tribute to the “unwavering dedication and selfless sacrifices of all those who contributed to this remarkable feat, achieved against overwhelming odds”.

The armed forces “reaffirm their unwavering resolve to defend the motherland, protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and ensure the nation’s security at all times and any cost”, the ISPR asserted.

Youm-e-Takbir holiday criticized

Business leaders criticised the “unnecessary and abrupt” public holiday observed for Youm-e-Takbir, announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, citing its detrimental impact on businesses and the national economy. Moreover, the sudden additional holiday has almost a double impact, as all scheduled deals and meetings are put on hold, they said.

Expressing their concerns to The Express Tribune, they stated that businesses were on the verge of finalising their transactions when the sudden announcement was made. They suggested that the government should have either revoked the notification or revised it by declaring a public holiday only for schools instead of closing all government organisations, especially commercial banks.

Economic analyst and CEO of Alpha Beta Core, Khurram Schehzad, highlighted the detrimental effects of an additional public holiday on the economy. He lamented that such holidays disrupt the economic cycle, halting the wheels of commerce.

“With the size of our economy standing at around $375 billion, even a single holiday can result in a loss of $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion annually, impacting the national economy significantly. Moreover, the repercussions of sudden holidays are compounded, as they disrupt planned meetings and deals, leading to further delays,” he said.

Schehzad underscored the potential economic ramifications of sudden holidays on an already inefficient and low-productivity economy. He warned against exacerbating the situation by reducing productivity further, especially considering the rising population and poverty levels. Urging swift action to improve productivity, he stressed the need for competitiveness on a global scale.

Seatrade Group of Companies Chairman Muhammad Najib Balagamwala said like additional holidays on Eid, politicians, bureaucrats and others are playing with the economy. He lamented the lack of productivity among politicians and bureaucrats, who often engage in idle activities instead of addressing important issues. Expressing his dismay, he underscored the detrimental impact of such actions on the economy, labelling it as shameful.

In a similar vein, Nabi Bux Sathio, Senior Vice President of the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA), vehemently opposed the holiday, deeming it pointless. He criticised government officials for shirking their duties, which not only disgraces taxpayers but also disrupts essential services such as surgeries in public hospitals and legal proceedings in courts. Sathio highlighted the widespread repercussions of such decisions, affecting various sectors across the country.

Moreover, Sathio suggested that people would appreciate the prime minister’s efforts if measures were taken to prevent power outages, particularly during scorching temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. He underscored the misery caused by frequent power fluctuations and outages, especially in Sindh and other regions, adversely impacting people’s lives.

“Youm-e-Takbir commemorates the day Pakistan carried out successful nuclear tests in 1998. As Pakistanis, we wholeheartedly respect and celebrate this day. However, in today’s challenging times, we cannot afford additional holidays that halt the operations of the private and banking sectors,” remarked Ismail Suttar, President of the Lasbela Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and Founding Chairman of the Salt Manufacturers Association of Pakistan (SMAP).

Suttar pointed out the urgency of remaining vigilant and diligent to overcome economic challenges. He stressed that exclusive holidays are no longer feasible, given the current economic turmoil. While the private sector operates tirelessly to sustain the economy, policymakers fail to grasp the severity of the situation. Moreover, Suttar warned that Pakistan is on the verge of default, with exports plummeting and the inflow of dollars delayed. Introducing excessive holidays could expedite the nation’s descent into economic crisis.

TBH, nothing has changed... Being a nuclear country and we are still struggling with problems like electricity shortage, inflation, and economic suffering.

Since then, we have regressed across all empirical observations for economic and security-related KPIs.

It was a bust move in retrospect.

takbeer label is oxymoronic.

Nukes are expensive to maintain.

Pakistan reportedly spends 1 billion USD annually to maintain them
Bharat spends roughly 2.7 billion USD

Although the warhead numbers are similar but Bharat's nuclear deterrence is more layered and technologically more sophisticated given its second strike doctrine and being aimed primarily at China.

After 2025 escalation, both nations are in process of upgrading the same so more expenditure for Pakistan at a time its economy isn't quite catching up with the ambitions of its army masters.

At some point close to 2050, there will be a cold war type situation between Bharat and China as Bharat is increasingly elevating its offense capabilities keeping China as its primary foe. Subcontinent is going to be the true epicentre of World War 3. We are going to make gulf wars, Russia-Ukraine look like baby wars. The global world order is going to eb turned upside down. America sit the hell down. We got this.
