This is my list of 25 best match-winners of all time in order of merit.Sorry if excluded some really big names but given preference to all-rounders,captains,and great fast bowlers as it is the fast men who were better match winners than the batsmen. It does not rank in terms of overall merit or class but only the player's explosive ability to turn games.

1.Gary Sobers
2.Viv Richards
3.Don Bradman
4.Shane Warne
5.Imran Khan
6.Adam Gilchrist
7.Walter Hammond
8.Malcolm Marshall
9.Keith Miller
10.Ian Botham
11.Curtly Ambrose
12.Dennis Lillee

Sobers was the epitome of cricketing genius who could make a 360 degree turn in game in every department.Viv Richards intimidated the greatest bowlers like a sword piercing flesh and demoralized the opposition like noone else. Simply took batting domination to regions of the sublime.Bradman was a run machine on another plane in runs and run-rate.Warne played the greatest role in rekindling the fire of Australian cricket to take it to a zenith it never reached before. He re-defined the role of the leg spinner.Imran shaped the destiny of nation as a skipper and all-round cricketer like no one else.Gilchrist could make the impact of a dynamite exploding when batting with a phenomenal average in games won.Hammond would have been close to the greatest ever had he not played in the era of Bradman. In addition to his 7249 runs he captured 85 wickets and his scoring rate could be devastating.Inspite of bowling alongside three other all-time greats Marshall delivered the ultimate knockout punch which enabled West Indies to emerge as arguably the strongest test team of all time.Miller had the talent to swing a game equally with both ball and bat.On his day Botham reminded you of a bucaneer, who could create the impact of a hurricane as much as anybody and his best efforts created reversals in cricket matches or test series more than anyone. In a 4th innings on a broken wicket Ambrose was the ultimate man to defend a low total making a bating line up look like nine pins rolling.Lillee was determination and agression personified on a cricket field.

I will only mention the players of my life time for now.

Younis Khan was a great test match winner for Pakistan, possibly the best ever.

Wasim Akram and his bowling was crucial in key moments.

Freddy Flintoff, although not a consistent test performer, was crucial in England's best wins in the middle of the last decade.

KP...what more can be said.

Joe Root in recent times for England.

Ponting for Australia, then again it is difficult to determine his match winning ability cos they had so many different ways to win matches with Hayden, Gilly, McGrath and Warne.

Jimmy with the ball, probably alongside Herath the best bowling test winner in the last 7 years.

Younis Khan is up there as well, one of the biggest match winners of the modern era

Younis Khan and Inzamam ul Haq. Younis would be my pick for the best ever match winner in Test cricket

Great list except Joe Root. He doesn't score big enough to win games for England away. At home, yes.Other names I agree.

Graeme Smith should be also there OP.

Root was crucial to winning in SA and his century helped England hammer SA by 7 wickets.

Smith, as with Ponting, was part of a very strong team so it is difficult to see their contribution as clear as say Khan or KP.

Root did scored a century in that match but I don't think that was the game changing moment. It was actually Broad who destroyed SA batting lineup in 2nd inning.

And I would disagree with your last statement because Smith was the one who used to rise on big occasions and decider in tests more than any of his teammates. This is why when you look at his performance, he has played some series defining performances in their famous victories away from home.

Just wanted to come and mention Younis Khan great matchwinner on his day impossible to stop.

Just a few names in no particular order

Bottham
Gilchrist
Warner
Imran Khan
Warne
McGrath
Younis
KP
Steyn
Ashwin
Ben Stokes

Some are great match winners and some are the best in today's game.

Muralitharan by far - he won games off his own back more than anyone else.

Also: Warne, Kumble, Imran Khan, Lillee, McGrath, Sobers, Marshall, Botham and many more.

If we judge the players solely based on the output in comparison to their colleagues, it's impossible to go past Bradman.

I assume during your lifetime India became the #1 rated team by a margin of 15 points with no match-winners.

Thread is "best match winners..."

Of course India has match winners but can you name me one that stands out better than Wasim, KP, Cook, JImmy, Ponting?

How many test matches have India one in England, Australia and SA in that time they were number 1? How many times did they play the team with the longest modern unbeaten streak Pakistan?

Thank you for answering.

India won 1 test each in England, SA and Australia during their journey to and stay at number 1 in 07-11. In 2007-08, India lost a series in Australia 2-1, won a series in England 1-0 in 2007, and drew a series in SA 1-1 in 2010-11.

As for the longest modern unbeaten streak (last 3 years plus), that is surely held by India (9 and counting).

If we go for within the last 10 years, then its South Africa.

In case you are interested, Rahul Dravid is one name.

Drew a series in England 2002
Drew a series in Australia 2003
Won a series in Windies 2006

As for him batting at slow rate, there is no way Cook can be mentioned among all and neither would Jimmy be who cant decimate a lineup outside home.
