Mind you, it cannot be a family member.

My greatest hero in life (keeping aside my Lord Jesus Christ) is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. He was my late father's greatest hero, as well as my greatest hero. I can't even put into words how much I admire the great man. The man was a genius academically, yet he sacrificed everything for his nation. Indian posters who know about him know all the sacrifices he made just so that us future generations could live in a free independent India.

While I have extremely high regards for members of the Hindustan Republican Association like Chandrashekhar Azar, Ashfaqulla Khan, Bhagat Singh, Ramprasad Bismil, Sukhdev, Rajguru, etc, my greatest hero of the independence movement still remains Netaji. I have way more regards for him than even Gandhiji, not to say I don't have high regards for the latter.

Who is your greatest hero in life? Would be really nice to hear from Pakistani posters.

Other then The Prophet of Allah(SAW) who was beyond a hero it has to be the great Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Without his incredible intelligence there would be no Pakistan today. What he managed to achieve is nothing short of extraordinary creating a nation state out of nothing. We see so many communities wanting freedom yet hardly any see the light of day that puts in to perspective of what the great Quaid-e-Azam managed to do. As if all this is not enough he was also the highest paid lawyer in British India that further adds a feather to his cap. http://www.myjinnah.com/

"“Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.”

Stanley Wolpert, Jinnah of Pakistan

Dr Muhammad Iqbal was the one who first perceived the idea of Pakistan. Implementing something in practical terms is much more difficult then imagining or philosophizing about it. For this reason the Quaid Jinnah was greater then Dr Iqbal.

You mean Allama Iqbal?

My father. Kindest man I ever knew.

In the political sphere: Nelson Mandela, who transcended the violence of his youth to become an icon of justice and forgiveness, who prevented a race war and united a nation. He would appear to be a genuine hero.

The people who brokered the Good Friday Agreement: David Trimble, John Hume, Mo Mowlam - bringing to an end arguably centuries of horror.

Both my Parents. The sacrifices they have made to make me and my sibling what we are today.

After my parents, it will be all the scientists and inventors without whom majority of us would have been dead due to disease.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

All other Prophets (Jesus, Moses, Abraham etc.; peace be upon them all).

Erdogan.

Non-Pakistani that comes to mind is David Graeber. His book on b.sh*t jobs hit home with the event of furlough, non-essential workers and working from home. Was saddened to recently learn he passed away in 2020.

Yasser Arafat.

It is hard to imagine a man who struggled and fought so much for his people as Yasser Arafat. A true hero.

It would be better if you refer to Islamic Jesus as Isa. For Christians, Jesus is God. You cannot reduce God to a human.

Isa and Jesus (PBUH). Same person. No need for complexity.

Not all Christians consider Jesus (PBUH) to be God. Unitarian Christians, for example.

Anyway. We are going off-topic.

I think the original poster means the most influential non religious character.

Unitarians are not Christians. Anyone who does not believe in Trinity is not a Christian. The God of Jesus is a Trinitarian God with Jesus being his begotten Son.

I agree this is off topic and needs a separate discussion.

Erdogan is not a prophet, just a very naughty boy

The thread is about heroes.

I feel Erdogan is the best Muslim leader in the world currently. So, I see him as a modern hero. Definitely better than the Arab sellouts.

Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha and Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam.

Possibly the greatest Indians who ever walked the earth.

According to the Nicean creed anyway.

Some Unitarians believe in the Trinity. Others do not. They are a liberal church, some of whom incorporate aspects of many systems of belief. And some are atheists who go for fellowship / community.

Were I a Yank I would probably be a Unitarian.

Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Can’t think of a more selfless person with such a huge impact in modern times.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, what a hero! I had the good fortune of seeing him once in my city from distance when he was the President.

Political:

Franklin Roosevelt - if you can buy a copy of Jean Edward Smith's fantastic bio please do. Here's a man who was crippled by polio and lost the ability to walk unassisted, yet steered his country through two of the biggest crises of the 20th Century in the Great Depression and World War Two. He was a privileged man, but fought for the underdog. He literally worked himself to death, suffering a cerebral bleed while working on his idea of a UN to prevent WW3.

MLK - People forget how despised Dr King was during his lifetime, and would be dismissed as woke or a Marxist today. Yet he stood up for his cause despite the baton charges, water hoses and imprisonments.

Mohammad Ali Jinnah - another man who literally worked himself to death for his country. I hope one day Pakistan realises his vision of a progressive Muslim nation where minority rights are protected, where people are free to go to their mosques, temples and churches as he eloquently put it. His personal integrity was indisputable.

Tony Benn - another man of privilege who fought for the underdog. Please watch on YouTube the clip of how during the height of the Gaza War in 2009 when the BBC inexplicably prevented aid appeals, he REFUSED to be silenced and read the appeal out anyway. A lion of a man.

Harold Wilson - a fellow Yorkshireman who kept Britain out of Vietnam despite American bullying and economic blackmail. Again, he fought for the underdog.

Sporting:

Bill Shankly - the man who transformed my team Liverpool into the club it is today. He dragged us out of the old Second Division (Championship today), modernised the training methods and facilities, and began an unprecedented 20 year spell of domination. His oratory was magnificent and still quoted today. He embodied the working class spirit of football.

Religious:

Abdul Sattar Edhi - selflessness personified.
