Your top 5 ODI openers of all-time?

Hard to argue against Tendulkar and Gilchrist, but the other spots can be debated. There has been many great openers like Sehwag, Ganguly, Saeed Anwer, David Warner, Chris Gayle and so on

1) Sachin Tendulker
2) Hashim Amla
3) Adam Gilchrist
4) Sanath Jayasuriya
5) Saeed Anwar

Sachin is undoubtedly the best. Gilly, Jaya and Anwar were all pretty similar in their role and impact and you can rank them any which way and it would be fine. However, neither of them were as consistent in scoring massive amounts of runs across the world as Amla has been.

Tendulkar
Lara
Dilshan
Hayden
Waugh

Honorable Mention: Ganguly
I just did not like his game against genuine fast bowlers so he's not in my top 5.

Guys like Gilchrist, Jayasuriya, and Sehwag were explosive but way too inconsistent.

Sachin
Greenedige
Lara
Sannath
Gilly

Honourable mentions,Ganguly,Dilshan,Anwar,and Mark Waugh.

Anyone who voted for Lara, did you know he was not a regular LO opener, like ever?

I had memories of him as an opener. But yes he just played 52 ODIs as an opener. He batted at no.3 for 106 OdI matches.

Sachin Tendulkar
Sanath Jayasuriya
Greenidge
Gilchrist
Saeed Anwar

Was thinking who is a better OdI batsmen- Williamson or BMac?

One averages 30 while other guy averages 46. There is not a gulf of difference in the era they played either.

Jayasuriya
Jayasuriya

The 5 guys above changed the whole dynamic of the way ODIs are played. Incredible audacity and flair.

Tendulkar
Jayasuriya
Gilchrist
Dilshan
Greenidge

Revised list:

Tendulkar
Jayasuriya
Rohit
Gilchrist
Dilshan

Rohit is seriously pushing for the number two spot. If he keeps this up for another 2 years, which he should, he will overtake Jayasuriya in my opinion.

Rohit having very good stats as opener. He can be 2nd best opener after tendulkar. Rohit will have to target 35-40 odi centuries, 11-12k odi runs and one match winning worldcup knock.

In no particular order

Sachin Tendulkar
Saeed Anwar
Adam Gilchrist
Sanath Jayasuriya
Desmond Haynes

Hard to pick any particular five. Probably era-wise: -

80s: - Greenidge, Haynes
90s: - Tendulkar, Jayasuriya, Anwar, Waugh, Ganguly
00s: - Tendulkar, Gilchrist, Gayle, Hayden
10s: - Amla, Rohit, Dilshan

So, 13 names in total. Reducing them to five, I would say: -

Tendulkar
Gilchrist (for the WC final inning)
Greenidge
Jayasuriya
Anwar/Waugh/Rohit(no clear no. 5)

Desmond Haynes hardly mentioned. At one time the greatest centurion in ODI's who freaked out in this form of cricket. Not as powerful as Greenidge but very artistic and pliable.Should make it here arguably.

Also Mark Waugh was an embodiment of talent and better than brother Steve in this form of cricket. In league stage best batsmen of 1996 world cup .

Saurav Ganguly -the prince of Kolkata also comes into my mind.

My 5

Gilchrist
Greenidge
Jayasuriya
Tendulkar
Haynes.

Anwar and Mark Waugh just miss out.

Sharma averages below 30 against England, South Africa and New Zealand away. As if people needed more proof of what a bunny he is against the moving ball.

Safe to say he's nowhere near the top five openers of all time and seeing how he's 31 and has only played 100 games thus far, won't be getting there in the future either.

Shikar Dhawan is a far better player and someone who can certainly end up a legendary ODI opener.

I made this post in 2018. The 2019 World Cup certainly pushed Rohit above Jayasuriya.

Tendulkar
Rohit
Jayasuriya
Gilchrist
Dilshan

For me,

1. Gilchrist
2. Jaysuriya
3. Fakhar
4. Sehwag
5. Trescothic

5 absolute bosses of white ball cricket

My top 5 Pakistan white ball openers:

1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Saeed Anwar
3. Sharjeel Khan
4. Salman Butt
5. Kamran Akmal (when opening)

SRT - absolute perfect, scored everywhere, scored in big tournaments, scored in big matches. Only dark spot being 2 failures in WC finals, should have scored more in the 2nd.

Gilchrist - absolute match winner, 3 wc finals - 2 fifties and a century

Jayasurya - changed the game in true sense. While this phrase changed the game' is catchy, very few can make legitimate claim to it and Sanath is one of them.

Hayden - While his career wasn't as long as some of the others but for that period of 2001-2008, he was an absolute beast esp in big tournaments.

Gordon Greenidge - in 80s he stood head and shoulder above any other opener in world cricket. He hooked, he pulled, had an ultra powerful square cut in times when facing fast bowlers with new ball wasn't easy.

Only counting 1990s onwards :-

Tendulkar , the numbers look good now rather than extraordinary but the hype this man carried back in the day belonged to a different dimension.

Gilchrist - Sucker-punched the opposition flat 3 World Cup finals in a row.

Jayasuriya - Revolutionized ODI cricket in the 1990s.

Sharma - The record speaks for him

Gibbs, Ganguly, Hayden, Anwar, Warner, Amla and a few more pretty much in the same boat with not much separating them. The above 4 mentioned for me are a level above

Sachin Tendulkar
Sanath Jayasuriya
Rohit Sharma
Saeed Anwar
Saurav Ganguly
TM Dilshan
Adam Gilchrist
David Warner
Desmond Haynes
Johnny Bairstow
