Pakistan's middle-order was nothing short of a disaster in the South Africa series so will the management make changes and experiment in the series against Zimbabwe?

Mind you, good performances against Zimbabwe may not tell us that much about the strength of our batting line-up so bit of a problem for Pakistan.

Challenges abound on and off the field for Zimbabwe ahead of their home series against Pakistan, but former test opener Tino Mawoyo believes the return of several batting stalwarts will lift the hosts' spirits.

Bruised by four heavy losses to Afghanistan across two formats in Abu Dhabi last month, Zimbabwe are expected to ring in the changes when they meet Pakistan on Wednesday in the first of three Twenty20 matches at Harare Sports Club.

Two test matches will follow at the same venue.

Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine are set to return to the lineup, bolstering a batting unit which is heavily reliant on all-rounder Sean Williams.

"I think it'll definitely bring the stability that we lacked, the experience, and I think it'll just lift the spirit of the lads as well," Mawoyo told Reuters.

A mountain confronts the hosts, however, if they are to threaten a Pakistan side brimming with confidence after dominating South Africa at home and away.

"(Zimbabwe) will have to be almost flawless in all three departments... they cannot afford to lapse at all and allow Pakistan to take control," said Mawoyo, who carried his bat for 163 against the Asian side in a 2011 test.

"(Pakistan) will come hard at you, and they'll come hard at you early... however, if they don't get early wickets and stuff doesn't quite go their way, they do tend to flatten out a little bit."

One example of that came in 2013, when Mawoyo and his team mates engineered a red-ball upset against Pakistan.

"I know it's a very long time ago, but the last time Zimbabwe took on Pakistan in a test match in Harare, they won," he said.

Overshadowing the return of international cricket to Zimbabwean soil after a pandemic-induced 15-month hiatus is a corruption scandal involving former head coach Heath Streak.

Streak, who was handed an eight-year ban, admitted to five breaches of the International Cricket Council anti-corruption code, including the disclosure of inside information for betting purposes and accepting a corrupt payment.

"(It is) not ideal to have such news going into such a big series, however the lads are professional. Some of them I know have personal relationships with him (Streak), but I think they just need to focus on the job at hand," Mawoyo said.

"The boys are professional enough to know what they need to be focusing on."

Could Pakistan unleash Asif Ali the bowler on Zimbabwe?

Won’t be necessary lol

What is the team news? Are we still playing our super duper 1st choice playing XI, or is any chance that of the new guns will get a chance?

I rather loose all T20s to Zimbabwe in trying out untested players.

I've finally found a solution to Pakistan's middle order woes:

Here's my line up...
Rizwan
Babar
Fakhar
Hafeez
Messi
Ronaldo
Faheem
Nawaz
Hasan
Afridi
Rauf

Misbah/Younis/Babar/PCB/CNN eat your heart out.

Does any poster over here believe in Asif ali ??
Just wondering.. out of curiosity!
I would like to know is he even worth all this investment ??
I would love to see if he comes off finally .. i mean your batting line-up basically have no power hitter who can go bang bang from Ball one.. may be amad butt deserve a chance?

Zimbabwe series are like FA Cup matches against lower league opposition.

You'll get zero credit if you win, but all the vitriol if you lose.

Shaheen should rested for this series.

This series shouldn’t have happened. Zero interest.

No positives to be expected, it would just provide Misbah with another chest thumping exercise before we finally get smashed later on in the year by better teams

They should have used this series to open with haider and get someone like rohail into the mix. Leg gies should play, shaheen must be rested. Hasnain should play all matches.

Misbah & co should try our bench strength for this match & series. No need to take this one seriously.

They should go with this line up.they should test the squad by giving opportunities.

Babar
Rizwan
Fakhar
Hafeez
Haider
Danish
Wasim
Hassan Ali
Qadir
Hussain
Rauf

The last thing asif ali should be doing is practicing bowling, he can't even bat properly.

You had me in the first half, I thought you were serious :facepalm

I don't know why Pakistan plays so much against Zim. Bilateral series is meant to be a preparation to find out your best 11 for ICC tournaments. Playing against a side like Zim twice a year will not yield any benefits unless you are playing your 2nd XI.

Pakistan's level is very low for all others but suits Zimbabwe.

Other than Misbah, NOBODY believes in Asif Ali. Not even Asif Ali.

Why is Azam khan not in the squad. If Sharjeel is there with fitness issues surely Azam khan could also be tried out who has a lot of time on his side and has shown good potential in psl and lpl.

I honestly don't think the level of opposition (for Pakistan) will go down considerably. In fact I doubt if it even actually does...

So, I'd expect a few tight games if zimbabwe play even close to their full strength side.

With this top 3, middle order will not get chance to bat.

Hmmm could do with resting off Babar then

1. Sharjeel
2. Rizwan (wk) & (c)
3. Fakhar Zaman
4. Muhammad Hafeez
5. Danish Aziz
6. Muhammad Nawaz
7. Faheem Ashraf/Muhammad Wasim Jr
8. Usman Qadir
9. Hassan Ali
10. Muhammad Hasnain
11. Arshad Iqbal

Excluding Hafeez you have 3 spinners and 4 pacers so not short on bowling.

Why you want Danish in the line up, whatever i have seen of him is not convincing (infact i was bit embarrassed to see him struggle against Norje short pitch, he was even struggling to get out of line), Haider deserve more chances given his talent. The batting looks very weak from 5 onward.

Pakistan cricket team to test youngsters in Zimbabwe series: sources

LAHORE: The Pakistan cricket team management has decided to rest its senior players in the Zimbabwe series and give the youngsters a chance to prove themselves.

Sources told , the team management has decided to rest senior cricketers during the series and will adopt a “rotation policy” in the upcoming series.

Pakistan play their first T20 match of the three-match series against Zimbabwe on April 21.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has been leading the country’s pace attack for several tours consistently, will be rested while fast bowler Hassan Ali will be rotated.

Sources said Wasim Junior, the entrant into the team, will likely make his T20 debut while right-arm quickie Mohammad Hasnain will be included in every match of the series.

Left-handed batsman Sharjeel Khan and youngster Danish Aziz will also be seen in action during the series while wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan will be rested, revealed sources.

Pakistan cricket team clear COVID-19 tests ahead of Zimbabwe series
The tour to Zimbabwe starts with the opening T20 International at Harare Sports Club on April 21.

The Pakistan cricket team began training for their T20I series against Zimbabwe on Monday afternoon after testing negative for the coronavirus, a team official had said.

The coronavirus tests were conducted on cricketers at their arrival in South Africa where the team continuously stayed in the ‘Bubble’.

All squad members of the Pakistan team tested negative at their arrival in Harare.

According to a news report published in The News on Monday, the team members that were in South Africa reached Harare from Johannesburg through a chartered flight.

“All test results that were conducted on the visiting team on arrival on Saturday in Harare have returned negative. The test results were released on Sunday,” an official who was accompanying the team had said.

The tour to Zimbabwe starts with the opening T20 International at Harare Sports Club on April 21.

The second game will be played on 23rd and the third on the 25th. The first of the two Tests will be played from April 29.

Pakistan won the ODI series against South Africa 2-1 and T20I series 3-1.

Might as well give Danish a chance again just for the experience, done with Haider and his scores of 20-odd he'll excel against Zimbabwe but he's done nothing for me to say he'll be a star in the upcoming World t20.

I think i would expect lots batting wise from Hafeez, Fakhar, Rizwan and Danish all very capable of batting against Zimbabwe plus you might get fireworks from Sharjeel and Wasim Jr can bat as well.

I hope so, We need someone to grab the chance in the middle order. yes agree wasim jr should play to put pressure on faheem, competition will push them to keep improving.
I think if middle order flop again vs zim then Malik have a gr8 chance to making comeback by having good PSL.

Need bat bat and bat.

Get middle order some balls under the belt.

Hafeez, Haider, Sharjeel, Asif all need at least 100 runs in the 3 games

I'm not for Malik making a comeback, only need one older guy in Hafeez.

This series should not be happening. Absolutely no gain at all for the players. In fact it is detrimental to them as we will have a situation as in the 2018 series where we bullied a hapless Zimbabwe and get into a false sense of security, only to then go to the Asia Cup and get embarrassed by everyone including Bangla. This trend then haunted us all the way to WC 2019 where we could barely win against the top teams.

True. What about this and it gives a chance to youngsters whilst the core team is rested.

Sharjeel

Sarfraz
Haider Ali

Qadir
Hussnain

That's why you give them a chance against a weeker team if he doesn't perform then you know he's not good enough.

Wow will common sense actually prevail? Shocking to see.

Smart they are resting Rizwan as well. He has played a lot of cricket lately and playing in every format as a wicketkeeper as well.

Yep, finally. I would've went a step further by sending Shaheen back to Lahore for 1 to 1 training at the performance center.

Rizwan and Shaheen both need a well deserved rest, would like even Babar as well as probably Faheem to maybe rest for last game or so. Others should stand up and play professional cricket.

Mohammad Wasim Jr looks pretty decent based upon what I have seen with decent temperament as well as solid basics for a pacer (Other than slightly angular runup into the crease which can easily be worked upon) and his ability with the bat is a bonus. Arshad Iqbal has been performing in T20 cricket for couple of years now in PSL and domestic cricket, so he will be an exciting watch as well with his height and hit the pitch bowling that is not very common trait in Pak bowlers. So both should be exciting watch if the get oppurtunities.

Danish Aziz on the other hand didnt stay enough on the crease in SA series to form any judgement. Both the time he was troubled by Nortje against which a lot of batsmen struggled even in Pak. If he is given a chance and he survives the first 10 balls in T20 then it would be a better time to judge him.

So resting both Shaheen and Rizwan while rotating Hassan;

Sharjeel
Babar (C)
Fakhar
Hafeez
Sarfaraz (WK)
Haider/ Danish
Faheem/ Wasim Jr
Nawaz
Wasim Jr/ Hassan Ali
Rauf/ Arshad Iqbal/ Usman Qadir(Depending upon conditions)
Hasnain/ Arshad

If Misbah and Babar has any guts, they should try all the newbies in this series.

I think Haider Ali must be persisted with until England series.

Danish deserves a chance.

Wasim khan and Arshad must be tried.

Go with Strong Batting line and New Bowling line Up.

I would select this 11

Rizwan
Haider Ali
Sharjeel K
Babar
Fakhar
Hafeez
Danish
Nawaz
Wasim Khan
Arshad
Harris Rauf

I think there'll be a customary 1 game loss against the Zimbabweans. Let's see which match that is.

They will likely play

Rizwan
Babar
Fakhar
Hafeez
Haider
Faheem
Nawaz
Hasan
Qadir
Hasnain
Haris

If Rizwan is rested than Saifi is going to play which isn't what is needed. It would be better if they rest Babar, drop Asif and play Sharheel and Danish.
My playing XI

Rizwan c
Sharjeel
Zaman
Hafeez
Haider
Danish
Wasim Jr
Hassan
Qadir
Hasnain/Rauf
Iqbal

Playing against Zimbabwe will make this average Pakistan look good , but on gig stage against top 4 teams they will struggle. Pakistan needs to start looking to play quality opposition

Good point.

How about

Babar

....actually, not too bad?

Playing against Zimbabwe will make this average Pakistan look good , but on gig stage against top 4 teams they will struggle. Pakistan needs to start looking to play quality opposition

This series is sandwiched between tours of South Africa and England . They also toured New Zealand earlier this year . No need to be critical just for the sake of it .

Playing against Zimbabwe will make this average Pakistan look good , but on gig stage against top 4 teams they will struggle. Pakistan needs to start looking to play quality opposition

Pakistan have played all three big teams within the past 2 years. They may have been forgettable because under Misbah we haven't been competitive, but if anything Pakistan are due a rest from being the whipping boys.

CHEVRONS skipper, Sean Williams, says he rates Pakistan highly but believes his team can challenge the Asian heavyweights, in their three-match T20I series.

The battle gets underway today at Harare Sports Club.

The matches have been set for today, Friday and Sunday. Addressing a virtual press briefing yesterday, Williams said although the Asian giants deserved respect, the hosts had the ability to compete against them.

Pakistan are coming in from a 2-1 ODI series victory, and 3-1 T20I series win over in South Africa.

It was an impressive show by Pakistan and will start their tour of Zimbabwe as odds-on favourites.

“Obviously, having Babar (Azam) leading them, and leading from the front with the bat, has been exceptional for them,’’ said Williams.

“Their top orders got a lot of runs in South Africa, which was crucial for them in winning that series.

“To beat South Africa, in South Africa, is no small feat, it’s a big thing, so I rate them very highly.

“I think they are a very good side, I think they are playing fearless cricket at the moment. They have got a lot of experience in the side.

“I think they are a good bunch of people, we always have good chats and good time with them as a team, so I think, they are really a good side that can go far.’’

Azam hit a superb T20 century in Centurion as the visitors beat South Africa.

“I think we can stop him, I think we have got some guys here, that can stop him,’’ said Williams.

“We have got some young players in this side, that play fearless cricket and I bet them to stop him, so I think he is stoppable.

“Not only that, we are playing at home, so our pitches suit our ballers, I know he came here and scored a double, I think two doubles against us last time.

“But, this is a new series, new players in our side, so let’s see how our guys go against him.’’ The skipper said the return of veterans, Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine, into the fold, was a huge boost for the team. The two missed the previous series due to health issues.

“It is huge for me to have those two back. You know, they have contributed a lot to Zimbabwe cricket in the past,’’ said Williams. “And, not only that but the leadership skills that they are bringing and experience that they have, coming into this T20 series for the team.

“Not only for the team but for me, as well, on the field, Brendan, obviously, playing T20 tournaments around the world, so he is a huge senior.

“Seeing Brendan back, at the top of the order, obviously, is going to be part of the plans and Craig also brings that cool, calm collectiveness into the side.”

Williams, who was nominated for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month awards for March, says the recognition, from around the world, has been a huge boost for him. He was nominated alongside Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar of India.

This is the first time a Zimbabwean player has been short-listed in the monthly awards.

I don't know why Pakistan plays so much against Zim. Bilateral series is meant to be a preparation to find out your best 11 for ICC tournaments. Playing against a side like Zim twice a year will not yield any benefits unless you are playing your 2nd XI.

Pakistan has two choices either play zimbabwe or no cricket during ipl window,
So i think it's better to play some cricket than nothing

Except SENA, every other team is free to play international cricket during the IPL.
