“I’ll long remember Asad Shafiq’s 100 in the 2nd innings as that of a genuine fighter" : Brett Lee

24-Dec-16 129
Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee has praised the Pakistan cricket team for showing excellent determination and fight back in the first test against Australia at the Gabba.

Lee who played for Australia from 1999 to 2012 wrote for an online website that one should never write off the opposing team at any stage of the game.

Lee describe his experience of the first test that after Pakistan were bundled out for just 142 runs in the first innings, there were talks in the press box and the Australian camp that the match could be over within three days. He further said that considering the past performance of Pakistan team in Australia, this claim was fair enough.

Lee emphasised that even though on record books, Australia may have won the test match but Pakistan taught him the lesson that one should never underestimate any cricket team.

Lee said, “One should never take anything for granted about a cricket team, especially one that represents the hopes and dreams of their nation and one that won the last series against Australia quite convincingly”

Lee further highlighted the impact of Misbah ul Haq and assistant coach Steve Rixon who have ignited the spirit of fight back in the team which has a history of getting crumbled in pressure situations.

Lee also appreciated the gutsy innings of Asad Shafiq and called him a genuine fighter

“I’ll long remember Asad Shafiq’s century in the second innings as that of a genuine fighter,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention that Australia won the first test match by 39 runs after giving Pakistan a target of 490 to chase in the second innings. Pakistan ended up scoring 450 which is now the fourth highest fourth innings total in the history of test cricket.

Wow that's nice of Lee.

Think Shafiq 100 will long stay in the minds of Australians for its fighting quality. Challenge now is to repeat the performance.

I said in another thread, he is the batting equivalent of Wahab, except he isn't a match-winner like him.

That innings at the Gabba was the equivalent of Riaz's spell against Watson and co.

In terms of equivalence in Tests:

Asad has 10 hundreds & 17 fifties

Wahab has 2 5Fers & 2 4Fers

Can you see why Asad is not like Wahab?

Performing in England and Australia makes you a star

I have to say you have a very poor understanding of cricket if that is what you actually believe

Shafiq did his job which is to score runs. In that spell Wahab didn't do his job of taking wickets

Wahab is more of a match-winner and that is the only difference I see.

Both very inconsistent.

Not entirely, they both were great to watch, but nothing came out of it.

Also, Riaz did do his job and picked up 2 quick wkts, plus had Watson dropped.

Brett Lee and Hayden like to appease the fans by talking great about subcontinent teams. We can almost feel they're lying about what's on their minds

So one should take their praise seriously if its only for Non subcontinental players.....

Are there any such commentators as well

If nothing else, these tours (England and Australia) have raised the the profile of the Pakistan players

I was talking about Lee and Haydens authenticity. Lee once said he was scared of bowling to Dhoni while infact he only bowled in one match to Dhoni at the time of that interview. And Dhoni got out cheaply to him.

They can always see the batsmen on tv and judge whether they are difficult to bowl at or not. Wayne parnell onve said he i scared of bowling to sehwag. I dont think he had faced much of sehwag either.

You can from now on listen to them and see for yourself. Thanks

I agree. Most former players do this, only a select few talk honestly about their playing days. Which is why their words shouldn't be the be all, end all.

Asad getting some recognition now, the expectations will only increase. Hopefully he is able to raise his standards as well.

Aussies making us happy with moral victories first with wahab and now with shafiq, fighting in winning cause matters not in losing one.

He will face a different challenge bowling wise this test. Tighter lines encouraging him to drive through covers or down the ground (for the nick to slip) or the sucker ball which would be the incoming delivery. If he plays long this match, we will see a different wagon wheel.

Should have lost it in three days I agree. Aussies gave us a gift of playing two extra days

An analogy with Wahab can be made on the ground that both had their moments in the sun in Australia and attained stardom without achieving anything for them team.

I don't know why this guy Shafiq does not looks to me a modern day player. He is too timid. His body language does not inspire any one . Although he got a very sound technique probably best in the pak side. He is a very good player as per pak standard. Let's hope this tour mark a turning point in his carrer
