Cape Town: India feel they have the right balance in their squad to break new ground and win a series in South Africa for the first time, to underline their top ranking in Test cricket, captain Virat Kohli said on Saturday.

“Our best result here has been a drawn series in 2010-11 but I feel the kind of bowling attack we have now and the balance we have in the side, we definitely can win here. There are no two ways about it,” he told a news conference as India began their preparations for the first Test at Newlands in Cape Town, which starts on Friday.

“We come here wanting to express ourselves, believing in our abilities and knowing we have the right balance to win Test matches under any conditions we play under.

“This is an opportunity for us to play good cricket. We aren’t thinking about the history of past series in South Africa but concentrating on winning each session and executing our strategy well. I think international cricket is all about staying in the present and trying to do things better than your opposition at all times.

“If we didn’t have that mindset, there would be no point getting on to the flight to come here,” Kohli told reporters.

Though India, top of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Test rankings, have won their last nine Test series in a row, stretching back to August 2015, their record in South Africa is poor.

Since 1992, they have won just two of the 17 Tests played there, losing five of the six series, with the 1-1 draw in 2010-11 their best return.

“We come to South Africa knowing the wickets are going to be different from those back home. We are under no illusions but we are ready for it.

“Last time we were here, there was a lot of talk about our batsmen being bounced out but we stood up rather nicely.

“The most important thing is not to get surprised by the pace and bounce. It is going to be much quicker and much more bouncy than back home and you will get balls that will surprise you every now and then, so the most important thing is to focus on the game ball by ball,” said Kohli, second behind Australia skipper Steve Smith in the individual Test batting rankings.

“That’s something we did last time. You can’t afford to worry about the pace and bounce, you have to believe in your abilities and take it head-on. That’s key to playing in conditions that are different from your own,” he added.

India play three Tests, six one-day internationals and three Twenty20 international matches on their two-month tour.

Apparently the actual quote

“For us every game is a home game. Even this one in Newlands. See the pitch and adapt. No excuses, no complaints ... Leave all the crap aside and try and compete in the conditions on offer.”

Pretty positive mindset. You expect a visiting team captain to come up with this mindset even though the records may be on a negative side and opposing your points.

This is up against a top notch bowling unit. Even a hint of assistance is enough for them to destroy any batting line up in the world. Indian line up is somewhat undercooked this time having faced an easier opponent.

fighting talk by VK - now needs to back it up with a few hundreds!

Way to go Kohli!

He can become the greatest ever Indian captain if he manages to win/draw series in SA. That'd be some accomplishment.

I don't follow Indian cricket matches but I'll check scoreboards of this one.

Indian fast bowlers are never used to kookaburra balls like Aussies. Hope they practice with those balls instead of SG balls.

Asian teams really have a pathetic record in SA & AUS.
All the big names but never been able to win a series.

It all depends on how indian bowlers bowl (if pitches are flat) or how batsman bat (if pitch is green). Virat will play role but not as big as indian seamers and openers will.

Great mindset. And spot on. No point in going there if you dont believe that you can compete well.

Are rahane and Murli vijay in the squad? They will be the key guys.

India in South Africa: Virat Kohli reveals why India opted not to have a practice game

Cape Town: India captain Virat Kohli on Saturday justified his team's decision to not play a warm-up game ahead of Test series in South Africa as the track on offer would not have been even "15 per cent" of what it will be at Newlands.

"You are never sure whether you are getting quality practice games or not. We would rather have practice sessions that are in our control," Kohli said during his media interaction after the team's first practice session.

"If you look at the wicket we are playing on right now, it's not even going to be 15 per cent of what we will get in the game," the skipper said.

"There is no point wasting two days, guys going in, scoring quick fifties and coming out. We would rather have them do two sessions like today, get into the Test match zone and test ourselves," Kohli added.

The Indian captain also emphasised on being in a right mental space before starting a series, which does not necessarily come from performing well in warm-up games.

"It doesn't matter if you have played three practice games if you are not in the right kind of frame of mind. If you are in a good head space and have had good practice session, then that is good enough as well."

The Indian team on Saturday opted for two practice sessions and experimented with different simulations, preparing the wicket according to the conditions they desired.

"We can try and prepare the wickets the way you want to. But if you are playing a two-day game, there is no chance of changing the wicket at different times of the day," Kohli said.

"Here we have the freedom to put more water on the wicket, roll it, make it harder come tomorrow's practice session and you have the conditions you want," he added.

Murli V, Rahul and Pujara will be the key for India.

If they can see off the new ball, then I see no reason why Kohli, Rahane and Rohit (yes he will play the 1st test) can't dominate the South African attack.

Yes

When It's Good It's Great,but when It's Bad It's Awful

Seeing Off the new Ball is Key.

Firing out filmy dialogues is much easier than winning. @kholi

Right, he should have said that we can't win at all but just wanted to have a free trip to SA, correct??? Sometimes, posters should just avoid posting here.

Cape Town - When South Africa slumped to a 3-0 Test series defeat in India back in 2015, the conditions were a central talking point.

The Proteas batting was nowhere as the Indian spinners dominated in Mohali, Nagpur and Delhi to secure one-sided wins on wickets that were effectively dust bowls.

The nature of the strips caused a stir in the cricket community, particularly in South Africa, with questions raised over what they were doing for the overall good of the game.

With South Africa's batsmen all at sea against Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, the art of fast bowling was almost non-existent for India throughout that series as they turned to spin from the get-go.

It is the major reason that India have been near-unbeatable in their own conditions in recent years, but they have struggled on their travels when leaving the sub-continent.

Over the next few weeks South Africa will have a shot at revenge and a chance to drown the demons of that disastrous tour two years ago.

The first of three Tests against India gets underway in Cape Town on January 5 with the Highveld tracks in Johannesburg and Pretoria the other two venues.

With Morne Morkel, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander all expected to be fit, one can expect to see wickets that offer the seamers a lot in terms of pace, movement and bounce.

That is where India have struggled in these parts, having drawn one and lost five Test series in South Africa since 1992 without ever having left victorious.

India coach Ravi Shastri, though, has a sense that this side is on the verge of achieving something special.

He says the players are in exactly the right head space this time around and he also downplayed India's struggles away from home.

"Tell me one team in world cricket that has travelled well over the last two years? We have that opportunity and we sense it," he said.

"For us, every game is a home game. Even this game at Newlands. You see the pitch and you adapt … no excuses, no complaints. Two teams have to play on that pitch."

Shastri's firm approach has hardened this India squad, and on Saturday at a training session at Western Province Cricket Club their batsmen spent significant time practicing against the short ball in the nets.

"This team is up for the challenge. If you had asked me four years ago if it was up for the challenge, I would have said 'no'," Shastri added.

"This team has gained in experience now. We have strength in our fast bowling department which is key in taking 20 wickets.

"The beauty about this team is that it doesn’t matter who the opposition is. We respect all oppositions. We look at the pitch and adapt to those conditions. It’s as simple as that."

The Newlands pitch was quite flat vs ENG in 2016 and SL's performance in 2017 was simply pathetic regardless of conditions.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of pitch is prepared this time around.

Isn't newlands where Australia was reduced to 24/9? I know kingsmead is a fast pitch. Other pitches have different nature for different series. Rolling out fast track to Australia could backfire. But Rolling out the same to subcontinent sides will give you upper hand.

If saffers feel they were hard done in India, now is the time for to prepare the fastest, bounciest pitches. This will be fun..

I like the attitude but no epic phainty on it's way.Destroy HTBs with no mercy.
Go proteas Go!

You have to admire Kohlis fearless attitude here. He could have been on the defensive, but he's made his intentions clear India are in South Africa to win. This is there best chance of winning a test series in South Africa.

Its all good but what do you think the likes of Wasim Akram, Ganguly, Sangakkara used to say?

Fact is Asian teams have a horrible record in SA / AUS.
I mean none of the 3 was able to win a test series in either country.

Thats an awful stat.

India will miss aggressive attitude. Sreesanth brought that aggression last time. He was bowling peaches. to some of the top batsmen when helped India bundle them out for 84 runs.

I have an honest question for the India fans on the forum:
It seems there's nothing Kohli cant do, including mindset cheer-leading: why is Shastri there?

Apparently the actual quote

Correction. This was Shastri's quote and not Kohli's.

Where do you think Kohli's bombast comes from? One on one sessions with the Shaz.
