“It will be an exciting series but I can’t see Pakistan winning a match” : Ian Botham

Well he is right to an extent. England's depth due to numerous quality all-rounders is unparalleled at the moment.

What England is lacking at the moment is one world class batsman to complement Root and Cook. Someone who could replace Hales, Vince or Ballance.

James Taylor retirement definitely hurt them.

Actually, I didn't read his comments first time (won't have either had it not been bumped), it's not even worthy of spending 2 minutes when it comes to cricket comments from Botham, which has ENG & PAK in it (ENG for obvious reasons & PAK for the battering he got on & off the field from Imran).

Now, what he has said is absolute rubbish - full of self deluded bravado.

First, his side doesn't deserved to be in top of the rank, even had they won it 4-0 against PAK. These days every team is hero at home - even Lanka is giving AUS a hiding, still just about 2 years back they lost 1-0 to SRL & last summer drew 1-1 to Kiwis. Their SAF win was more of a SAF decline than anything else. IND & ENG is just the things to come for SAF - they are already 5th/6th & couple of years time will become permanent there, unless policy doesn't change there. India is just showing in Caribbean Isles, how poor ENG was to finish 1-1 there.

Second - England is probably 5th or 6th feared team if I take home & away counted. No way, they are feared more than AUS in AUS, IND in IND, PAK in UAE & now probably SRL in SRL. In fact, they drew 1-1 at home, but might not return 1-1 from New Zealand.

He quoted PAK 3-1 & 3-0 (should have been 2-1) in last 2 UK tours, last one being 6 years back; but forgot to mention 3-0 & 2-0 in UAE since then. In fact, out of that 3-1, the last Test at Lord's should have been scrapped from records for obvious reasons. Had it been ENG, AUS or IND in receiving end, it would have been as well, most likely. Had there been 9 Tests in those 2 Series at UAE, England would have been humiliated 7-0 or 8-0, may be even 9-0. I see lot of "fun" regarding PAK & Indian collapse in ENG, for a side that went packing in a session for 74, chasing 140.

Last 2 Ashes reads ENG 3-2 at home, AUS 5-0 at home .... and that's why Botham is a laughing stalk, no clue on what he is spouting. Even SRL won 1-0 just about 2 years back & next time ENG visits SRL, I can see them losing 2-0, with 1 Test might be ruined by rain.

English all-rounders are exactly the medium pace version of Jadeja or Dilruhan Perera or MoHa. Dibli doblies, who are lucky to to play lots of Test in favoured home condition. In next couple of winters, the likes Woakes, Stokes will be lucky to keep their spots in squad after the drubbing they are waiting for in India & Australia.

I have still good contacts with few BD players & trust me, at home, even Kiwis & West Indians are feared more than those Poms. Yes, it's in ODI and ENG has changed lot in ODI, still, they have lot to go before earning that fear, what Botham thinks of his team. If absence of players like James Taylor hurts England so much, then I wonder what Sri Lanka should say about it.

The English team that won Ashes down under & in India had 5/6 World class players including KP, Bell, couple of spinners & 2 pacers at their prime. This is a pretty average English side, which actually caught Pakistan off-guard, otherwise 2-1 was written there & they'll lose 7 to 9 out of 10 Tests in IND & AUS. Botham is a loud mouth snob, who speaks more than what he should, because he has no clue on what's going around. Most posters in PP has better clue on contemporary cricket than Botham, because during match, these guys watch cricket when Botham is busy with his booze.

You are an English fan, which is perfectly OK, but never try to defend this arrogant, ignorant & blue nose English guy who takes the advantage of his playing career, by insulting people/teams he doesn't like.

Eloquently put, sir. Especially the bold part.

Posters like you are the reason I keep coming back to PP :)

Obviously Botham is deluded. But if he was only referring to the Odi team then I think he has a point. England have real depth in their odi side and I would say they are just growing into being the best in the world esp at home. We won't win a single Odi.

MMHS Woakes and Stokes medium pace dibbli dobbies? Stop embarrassing yourself with your trash.

A lot of egg on a lot of faces..both in the cricketing world and on this forum ;)

Still, I'll have to go long way to match Sir Ian Botham regarding his forecasts on English Team & it's prospect in AUS (& this Series).

Anyway, wait for few months, then we can come back again here after the IND Series (just like I embarrassed myself regarding SRL-ENG Lord's Test).

You've already embarrassed yourself by calling 2 bowlers who regularly bowl late 80mphs and are capable of hitting and surpassing 90mph medium pacers.

You are embrassing yourself and entire PP community by jumping into response without reading the post or the context. If you had read the post carefully, instead of embarrassed with my post, you would have been pampered as an English fan. But, I can't help if someone has no clue what is MoHa, Jadeja or Dilruhan on their favourable condition.

Do you think England is going to open with 90mph Stokes & Woakes in India? Obviously Englanf 'll need couple of spinners & lots of batsman. If you have 2 bowlers regularly hitting 90mph, and bat as well, obviously they should play every game.

If you can answer this question, I'll take out that dibly-Dolby comment, after India tour - promise.

Calling someone a medium pacer is a pretty factual statement that doesn't need a context. You've called Woakes and Stokes medium pacers and been shown up, simple as that.

Barring any calamities then yes both Woakes and Stokes will nearly definitely both be in the team in India. Stokes won't open the bowling as there's better options available to do so and he'll be more handy with the old ball but Woakes may quite possibly do so.

haha you mean half the batting side.... you lose three batsmen in the upper middle order your batting backbone is gone. What I have seen thus far of England in test they are poor side on two fronts.

(1) No genuine spinners and lack of technique against quality spinners.
(2) Middle order that cannot resist presenting opportunities.

Unless England sorts out these issues they will remain a one dimensional side. They have moutain to climb even in BD.

they are feared more than AUS in AUS, IND in IND, PAK in UAE & now probably SRL in SRL.

Eng have not been the most feared teams for ages at home. Botham is just being himself with all these non-sense.

LOL fearing the likes of Hales, Ballance, Vince, probably the most fragile middle order in world cricket at the moment. i'm still dissapointed pakistan didn't win the series after the edgbaston debacle if it wasn't for joe root and alistair cook england would be as mediocre as they were in the 90's.Shame there are people so gullable to actually agree with the likes of Ian Botham rather than getting behind our own team.

Doesn't surprise me one bit that Mamoon agreed with everything that Botham said.

Well. I think Botham should double down and claim he meant the odi series.

Of course butha is biased and abraisive but actually some of what he was saying made sense. Having beaten an albeit weakened SA in SA they deserved to think of themselves as the best in the World. Similarly if it had been damp Pakistan may well have struggled given our seamers arent as good as theirs.

Not sure why England persist with Hales, Vince and Ballance. Time to push Bairstow and Moeen up. Stokes comes back with possibly Buttler or Bell. Pretty decent team but lacking a spin threat to do well in Asia.

Similarly with us drawing in England we deserve to think we are the best team in the World as the current no1 travel so badly.

I thought we could win one match. but to be honest we should have won this series. Egdbaston should have been a draw. And we are always strong at the Oval. i think this may be the last year we see butha on sky.

Deep inside his heart Botham knows Pakistan should have won this series 3-1 and England got off nicely with a 2-2 draw.

Pakistan should have won 3-1. Also wonder what might have been if we won the toss at OT. Gladly swap it with winning the toss at Edgbaston as Cook would have batted anyway.

We had poor evening sessions with the ball on day 3 and 4 at Edgbaston. Cost us the series.

While he must be sitting in some corner and sulking Botham is a hard core supporter of the 3 lions. It's very evident in the way he played his game as well as in his role now a s a commentator. He does very little fence sitting and expects England to win everytime everywhere. I am pretty sure he sees England winning every tour outside whether its Australia, India, UAE, Mesopotamia......Kepler Wessles, Justin Langer all sound the same when they talk about their respective countries. There's no fence sitting!

I enjoy them more than the commies who play it safe. Just put your tue belief out there rather than the diplomatic gibberish they usually spew out!!

Rather Botham than some of the Pakistani commies who resort to insults and wrist slitting when the team struggles then switch to praises when they win!!

I didn't know he said something like that. I am glad he now has his tail between his legs. Someone should tweet him about this and see how he reacts. Still remember him snubbing me on twitter during Ind-Eng series in 2012, I think I had a genuine question to him.

I feel, he and Geoffrey both do what MMHS said - mount the high horse and take advantage of their cricketing pedigree to belittle others.

Geoff Boycott ? Unfair to compare him to Botham as he's not afraid to slaughter England when the situation merits.

He even testified on Imran's and Inzamam's behalf when the ball tampering affairs of 1992 and 2006 erupted. Unlike "back in my day Botham" he's been willing to embrace the modern game and has even called for 4 day Tests, D/N Tests and T20 as a means to grow the game. He was a critic of Murali but when the scientific evidence came out about the whole chucking debate, he changed his views with the facts.

Whereas Botham is an incredibly stubborn man whose views are often coloured by his parochialism and how things were "back in my day" - that stubbornness did make him a fierce competitor on the field but as a pundit it goes against him.

for a team that has no no2, no4, no5, not even half decent spinner.... and then they r the team to beat?

how will they compete in India, SL, UAE/Pak....? even WI? ....

"England are the most feared team in the world right now"

Since Sir Ian Botham made this statement, England have drawn at home to Pakistan, drawn against Bangladesh and got marmalised in India. They also equalled their record year for most losses in a calendar year.

Botham has a great knack of predicting things I must say.:srini

Haha. They are in a mess for sure.
