“President Macron has attacked and hurt the sentiments of millions of Muslims” : PM Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided to raise the issue of blasphemous caricatures in France at international forums, which has angered the Muslims across the world, it emerged on Tuesday during the Federal Cabinet meeting.

According to sources, the prime minister informed the cabinet that he would write letters to Muslim world leaders and seek their support on the matter.

“In the letter, the prime minister would ask them to show unity and solidarity on the issue of blasphemous caricatures,” the sources said.

PM Imran Khan said that no one would be allowed to disrespect Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in the name of freedom of expression.

The cabinet, while taking strong exception to the publication of blasphemous caricatures in France and hurting the sentiments of billions, Tuesday said it was intolerable and unacceptable for any Muslim.

It also condemned in the strongest terms the remarks of French President Emmanuel Macron that hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims.

During the meeting, it was reiterated that every available forum would be used for the effective representation of the sentiments of Muslims regarding the blasphemous caricatures.

In this regard, the reservations of Pakistani nation as well as Muslim Ummah would be conveyed to the world through the platform of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the cabinet said.

Strong protest lodged over anti-Islam campaign

Pakistan had on Monday summoned French envoy Marc Baréty to lodge "strong protest" against the publication of blasphemous caricatures and Macron’s "anti-Islam" comments.

According to a spokesperson for the Foreign Office, a demarche was also handed to the French envoy by Special Secretary (Europe) Dr Aman Rashid. The FO had told Baréty that Pakistan strongly protested the publication of blasphemous sketches in France.

A "strong protest" was also recorded over Macron's "blasphemous statement" after the caricatures were published, the FO had said, adding that it condemned the French president's statement accusing Muslims of separatism and vowing not to give up on blasphemous caricatures.

Mr. Hypocrite continues with his absurd statements that continue reaffirming the point that he's the Donald Trump of asia.

I'm sure if France filled his pockets like China has he would stay quiet about all this like he has about the genocide

So you agree that IK is doing the right thing regarding France. Your objection is with him not speaking up against China. That is half a victory for IK that an important poster and critic thinks he is right somewhere.

When did I say that he's doing the right thing?

Sorry for assuming. IK is speaking against France. IK is not speaking against China. Which one of these you think he is doing right?

Neither. Either speak up against both or stay quiet against both. If you want my personal opinion, I'd rather he stayed quiet on both issues.

Thanks for revealing where you are coming from. Your problem is not that he is not speaking against china, but that he is speaking against france. Nothing more to know.

Tehran, Iran – Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has denounced France’s treatment of Islam, adding that Western support for cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad is unethical and insulting to Muslims.

In a televised cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the president said freedom must be accompanied by a respect for values and consideration of ethics.

“Westerners must understand the great Prophet of Islam is loved by all Muslims and freedom-lovers of the world,” Rouhani said.

“Insulting the Prophet is insulting all Muslims. Insulting the Prophet is insulting all prophets, human values, and amounts to undermining ethics.”

The Prophet is deeply revered by Muslims and any kind of visual depiction of him is forbidden in Islam. The French caricatures in question are seen by Muslims as offensive and Islamophobic because they are perceived to link Islam with terrorism.

The images are regularly published by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. They were cited as the reason behind a deadly attack launched on the magazine’s offices in early 2015 by two al-Qaeda-linked fighters.

On October 16 this year, French teacher Samuel Paty was murdered in broad daylight near his school in a suburb of Paris after he showed the caricatures to his students as part of a discussion on freedom of expression.

Muslim leaders offered their condolences and support to France after the killing. However, since then, there have been rising concerns that Muslim communities in France would suffer collective punishment as the authorities roll out their response to the killing of Paty.

French and European leaders have come out in support for the right to display the caricatures, citing freedom of expression.

“We will not give in, ever,” Macron wrote in a series of tweets on Sunday evening in French, Arabic and English. “We respect all differences in a spirit of peace. We do not accept hate speech and defend reasonable debate. We will always be on the idea of human dignity and universal values.”

This support, as well as comments by French President Emmanuel Macron, who on October 2 said Islam was in “crisis”, have prompted a backlash by Muslims around the world.

Muslim leaders and organisations have condemned Europe’s stance, and several Muslim countries are supporting a campaign to boycott French goods.

Iran’s religious leaders have not called for a boycott of French goods. But Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, chairman of the influential Expediency Council, on Tuesday welcomed other Muslim countries’ support for a ban on French products.

“It was a very good move and we hope that others follow on this path,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Iranian foreign ministry summoned the French chargé d’affaires to protest against Macron’s comments and his support for the right to keep showing the caricatures.

Public and student protests are expected to take place on Wednesday in front of the French embassy in Tehran’s Neauphle-le-Chateau street, featuring public prayers and speeches by clerics.

Political analyst and Tehran University professor Mohammad Marandi said the world’s Muslims were “shocked” by Macron’s position.

“Europeans have set a number of red lines for themselves in terms of freedom of speech, including the Holocaust,” Marandi told Al Jazeera.

“But not only do they insult what other people hold sacred, in this case, those of almost two billion Muslims, they support and propagate it as well.”

Iranian authorities, media condemn France
Over the past few days, figures and groups across the Iranian political spectrum have united to condemn the French and European stance.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Monday Muslims were “the primary victims of the ‘cult of hatred’ – empowered by colonial regimes and exported by their own clients,” and that insulting all Muslims for the crimes of “such extremists… only fuels extremism”.

Other officials, including the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the speaker of parliament, and adviser to the supreme leader slammed Macron, who they said is pursuing a “foolish enmity” with the Prophet Muhammad in part due to “his lack of experience in politics”.

On Monday, 240 members of the conservative-majority Iranian parliament issued a joint statement against what they called the “anti-human” French stance, adding that the “audacity and arrogance” of the French president had nothing to do with freedom of speech and was part of a larger plan against Islam and Muslims.

The Iranian army said in a statement on Tuesday that: “Those who claim to champion human rights are generalising the actions of one … to the whole of Islam”.

A number of Iranian media outlets and newspapers have also dedicated their front pages to the controversy.

Conservative daily newspaper Vatan-e-Emrooz ran a large depiction of a red-faced Macron as the devil: “Iblis of Paris” was the headline.

The Keyhan daily published an editorial calling for the expulsion of the French ambassador as the “least of responses to Macron’s obscenity”.

It has called for the French ambassador’s expulsion multiple times in recent years in response to controversies in Europe concerning Iran and Muslims.

Guys US is a free country right with Freedom of Speech and everything

So here Geller (anti-Muslim) drew prophet Muhammad PBUH cartoons and she was criticized by the US RIGHT WING for her actions (Macron not only supported the actions of cartoonists but also displayed the cartoon on government buildings look at the diffrence in the handling of the crisis)

here is President Trumps quote on Galler the cartoonist "On the day after the shooting, Donald Trump, appearing on Fox & Friends, questioned Geller's motives. He said, "It looks like she's just taunting everybody. What is she doing? Drawing Mohammed and it looks like she's actually taunting people. (...) You know, I'm one that believes in free speech, probably more than she does. But what's the purpose of this?"

Bill O Rielly "In response to Trump's remarks, Bill O'Reilly said in his program The O'Reilly Factor, "Mr. Trump is correct. By setting up a contest and awarding $10,000 for a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed, the American Freedom Defense Initiative spurred a violent attack. (...) Insulting a religion with more than a billion followers does not advance the cause of defeating the fanatical jihadists. It hurts the cause."

So the criticism is not the freedom of Speech but the way the government is handling this situation by clearly taking a side

IK is right because other western countries didn't took a side when they faced this situation but Macron is encouraging this behavior in the name freedom of expression which is wrong

France's president Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for coronavirus, his office has said.

The Elysee Palace said he was tested after showing early symptoms.

He will now isolate for seven days but will continue to work and carry out his activities remotely.

The brief statement did not give details of the symptoms the French president was experiencing.

"He will continue to work and take care of his activities at a distance," it added.

Mr Macron was due to visit Lebanon next week. The trip has now been cancelled, the palace said.

The diagnosis comes nine days after a state visit to Paris by Egypt's president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

During the two-day trip, Mr Macron presented his Egyptian counterpart with the Legion of Honour - the highest French award.

Actually france has been shown its place. That despite taking dept from g20 countries, Pakistan still talks against them when principles are involved. Whatever be his flaws, under IK, Pakistan has shown more ghairat.

This is what stings the anti-Pak brigade the most. Imran did not sign up to these loans and debts which have enslaved the country, that will have been done by predecessors, but he won't let that stop him speaking out. We have seen already that Pakistan has returned huge loans to Saudi Arabia who tried to buy silence.

lol. Anti pakistani sentiment seems to have messd up your reading skills. It was a G20 inititave and Pakistan STILL condemns cartoons of prophet(pbuh) and Islamaphobia of France unless Macron has emailed you suggesting otherwise?

Talk is cheap. If Pakistan is a country of strong principles, it should refuse French aid. But Pakistan cannot do such a thing, because it cannot bite the hand that feeds it. Pakistan is set to receive another 200 million Euros from evil France.

And France steals that money from Haiti and its former colonies in Africa. Trying reading about colonialism. France has one of the most despicables histories and even today they extract money from African governments and require them to keep a large amount of their foreign reserve in France's central bank. If Pakistan can finesse France, good for them.

Cannot wait for LePen to come into power next year. You can always trust Europe to offer up far-right governments.

I really hope IK stops crying about the cartoons now. This is a good step forward. I had high hopes for IK, let's hope he steps up now and focuses on real issues.

Also, pathetic of Macron to give Sisi France's highest honour.

Ties with France to be deepened: PM
Premier hoped that the ambassador would contribute towards strengthening the bilateral relationship

ISLAMABAD:
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said that Pakistan was committed to further deepen its relations with France across all areas of mutual interest, saying continued engagement would further deepen mutually beneficial relations.

The prime minister reaffirmed the importance Pakistan attached to its longstanding cooperative relations with France, both bilaterally and in the context of the European Union.

The premier hoped that bilateral relations would get strengthened and new areas for cooperation would soon be explored. The prime minister shared the views during his meeting with French Ambassador Nicolas Galey who called on him at the PM Office.

During the meeting, the prime minister highlighted the extensive devastation caused by recent floods across Pakistan and the government’s response to address the dire situation.

In this regard, the prime minister expressed gratitude to President Emmanuel Macron for solidarity and support for the flood-stricken people and for sending a relief flight carrying tents, water pumps and a team of doctors and nurses for the flood-affected people.

The prime minister underscored that the scale and magnitude of losses was too big to be borne by the country alone and that the international community’s support was of vital importance.

The premier added that Pakistan despite having a negligible contribution to climate change was among the most vulnerable to its devastation as manifested in the recent floods.

The prime minister runderlined that besides the immediate relief assistance, France could contribute to the government’s efforts in the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.

“In the bilateral context,” Shehbaz said, “Pakistan was committed to further deepen its relations with France across all areas of mutual interest.”

He hoped that the ambassador would contribute towards strengthening the bilateral relationship as well as explore new areas for cooperation, such as IT, start-ups, agriculture, water management and energy.

Shehbaz said that Pakistan looked forward to continued engagement with France to further deepen mutually beneficial relations.

After the publication of blasphemous caricatures in France in 2020, the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) took to the streets and blocked many parts of the country to pressure the then PTI government to expel the French ambassador from Pakistan.

The country had remained engulfed for weeks due to the protests by TLP workers and supporters demands to sever ties with France and expel its envoy. At one point, PTI government had to summon the National Security Committee (NSC) to discuss the situation.
