“There are more chances of snowfall in Lahore than a series between India/Pakistan" : Sunil Gavaskar

Former India captain and batting talisman Sunil Gavaskar has given his opinion on the possibility of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan during a conversation with former Pakistan cricketer and commentator Ramiz Raja on the latter’s Youtube channel.

The topic has been in discussion among cricket pundits ever since Shoaib Akhtar put forth a suggestion of an only for TV series between the two countries to help raise funds to fight the coronavirus pandemic in both the countries.

“There are more chances of snowfall in Lahore than bilateral series between India and Pakistan.

“Both teams will keep on meeting in World Cups and ICC tournaments, but a series between them seem unlikely right now,” Gavaskar said.

Former India captain and Gavaskar’s former teammate Kapil Dev had also spoken on the issue a few days back. Kapil, who captained India to teh 1983 World Cup win, had said that a bilateral series, specially in these circumstances would endanger the lives of many people and it is not a feasible idea.

The entire sporting world, including cricket, has come to a complete standstill with no sports taking place anywhere in the world due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar’s suggestion about an India-Pakistan series to raise funds in the fight against Covid-19 has started a war of words among former India and Pakistan cricketers. Sunil Gavaskar was the latest to join after India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev and Pakistan’s 2011 World Cup captain Shahid Afridi gave contrasting opinions on it.

Gavaskar said Lahore may receive some snowfall but a bilateral series between India and Pakistan cannot be played in present circumstances. Just like Akhtar had answered Kapil Dev’s remarks, the Rawalpindi Express decided to respond to Gavaskar by saying, “Well Sunny bhai, we did have a snowfall in Lahore last year :) So nothing is impossible.”

“There are more chances of snowfall in Lahore than bilateral series between India and Pakistan,” Gavaskar had told former Pakistan batsman Rameez Raja on his Youtube channel.

“Both teams will keep on meeting in World Cups and ICC tournaments, but a series between them seem unlikely right now.” India and Pakistan have not played a full-series since 2007 due to the diplomatic tension between the two nations. They only play each other in ICC events and Asia Cup.

Former India captain and Gavaskar’s former teammate Kapil Dev had also spoken on the issue a few days back. Kapil, who captained India to the 1983 World Cup win, had said that a bilateral series, especially in these circumstances would endanger the lives of many people and it is not a feasible idea.

Akhtar had then replied to Kapil by saying that the former India all-rounder had failed to understand his comments. Afridi too echoed Akhtar’s views and said, he had expected a better response from Kapil Dev.

The entire sporting world, including cricket, has come to a complete standstill with no sports taking place anywhere in the world due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Jokes on him, think it snowed in Lahore a couple of years ago :faheem

Sunny is not only a legendary batsman but also true gentlemen of the game and has been loved and respected in equal measure by the PK public for his bravery. He must feel so out of place in Modis India.

Apparently Gavaskar hasn't been back to Pakistan since 1982-83.

So since India's World Cup win of 1983 he hasn't returned.

Not wholly correct.

He was in Pakistan for India's ODI series commemorating Pakistan's golden jubilee in 1997. That's when Sarfraz Nawaz notoriously gave a live interview accusing Gavaskar of being involved in match fixing, while Gavaskar was in the commentary box for PTV.

I don't know if he has visited since though.

Players need to stop towing the Govt lines and think for themselves and say what comes to their minds about cricket between Pakistan and India.

I for one do not really care whether India wants to play with Pak. Yes we are losing revenue but its not the end of world for Pak cricket. Pak cricket will continue to flourish once foreign big teams started visiting Pakistan, re-popularisng cricket in the country.

Unfortunately Indians are too buzdil to do this. Pakistanis on the other hand speak their mind always. Makes you wonder if India is really a democracy as it claims to be.

Deep down Indian players and most Indians really want to play Pakistan and want to have friendly ties. But everyone is scared of their fascist government and its fascist followers. The amount of Indians on this forum is a testimony to how much they love Pakistan cricket and how they want to have ties with us. Just a shame that their nutjobs have ruined it for everyone by electing such a government.

Nope, I think he was exclusively contracted to Star during the years prior to 2008. So he hasn't visited in an official capacity since 1997.

Heard him during an India Today conclave in 2018 Asia Cup talking about Pakistan food and how his tummy got bigger when he went to Pakistan. And then said his tummy hasn't got bigger because he hasn't been back to Pakistan since.

He was definitely there as commentator in 97, and if memory serves me correctly 1999 also for the Asian Test Championship match in Lahore between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Government here brainwashed the majority of people through media and IT cell against a particular community & country on religion basis these blood sucking politician have no other motives but to spread hatred & fear among majority that one day minority will take over your jobs and your country from you .
whoever tries to speak the truth they have been labelled as traitor & pakistani or encouraged to go to pakistan.

The Indian public will eat them alive and their post cricket careers will be over.

The comments which were directed towards Harbhajan and Yuvraj for supporting Shahid Afridi's charity foundation were unbelievable.

Former Indian cricket team skipper Sunil Gavaskar believes that India can swap the T20 World Cup hosting with Australia and host the tournament instead of the scheduled 2021 edition amid the Coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak has resulted in all cricketing activities getting suspended around the world and it looks unlikely that Australia will be able to host this year’s edition of the tournament. Gavaskar said that India can host this year’s competition if the COVID-19 curve flattens and Australia can host the 2021 edition.

“As we all know, Australia has barred foreigners from entering the country till September 30. The tournament starts mid-October so it is looking difficult at the moment,” Gavaskar told India Today.

“Next year the T20 World Cup is in India. If India and Australia come to an agreement and the COVID-19 curve in India flattens out, they can swap. It can be held in India this October-November and next year in Australia around the same time.”The IPL too has been indefinitely postponed but there is a possibility of it being held in September.

Gavaskar also said that the Indian Premier League (IPL) should be held before the World Cup so that the players can get some much needed practice. The tournament was postponed indefinitely amid the ongoing crisis.

“If it (T20 WC swap) happens that way, IPL is just held prior to T20 World Cup so there is enough practice for the players. Then you can have T20 World Cup in November and Asia Cup in December in UAE. December is a much better time to host a tournament in the UAE,” he concluded.

Lets face it. This series will not happen.

Akhtar's idea was that adversity would bring us together but he was dreaming.
