LAHORE: Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq on Saturday said Pakistan’s batsmen lacked in aggression while its bowlers might have been fatigued because of which the team experienced a whitewash in the three-Test series against Australia

The former captain, however, expressed hope that Pakistan will be faring better in the upcoming ODI series Down Under as many fresh and talented players are in the squad and are determined to do well under skipper Azhar Ali.

Talking to Dawn on Saturday, Inzamam was quite candid in his views about Pakistan’s sluggish show in Tests. “First of all we couldn’t play well under pressure and twice our batsmen failed to hold their nerve for even two sessions of the day which is quite unfortunate,” he said.

“Even when they were in strong position, our batsmen could not show aggression. In Brisbane they scored with an average of 3.1 and were even slower in Melbourne. The Australians on the other hand were aggressive, scoring at times at almost eight runs an over,” he observed.

“When you go on the defensive, it allows the opposition bowlers to dominate you and that’s what happened with our team.”

“Our key batsmen like Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq and others just played a couple of good knocks in the three Test series and only Azhar Ali was consistent with more good knocks. As for Misbah, he failed to play even a single good innings,” lamented Inzamam. “Now if that is the standard of our consistency, it is not good enough at the international level.”

“Our bowlers might have been experiencing fatigue as no bowler could take five wickets in an innings which was sorry to see,” he added. “Our main bowlers have been playing regularly in the last three series and the fatigue could have affected their performance.”

“We have also been overtly relying on leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who had emerged as our main bowler in the past few series. But he failed miserably in Australia and generally all our bowlers conceded too many runs,” Inzamam pointed out. “I feel that the bowlers, if they were not getting wickets, should have at least tried to control the flow of runs but that did not happen.”

When asked why skipper Misbah looked out of sorts on the field despite being a mentally strong person, Inzamam said: “Look, when your team is not performing and you are also struggling with the bat, the pressure is doubled and Misbah is also passing through the same situation.”

However, when asked whether Misbah would be able to come out of this grim situation at a ripe age of 42, Inzamam avoided a detailed reply and simply said, “it is up to Misbah.”

The head of selectors, though, lamented the fact that head coach Mickey Arthur could not stay in Pakistan for a longer period to watch and groom the back-up players. But he added that during the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he would sit with Arthur to short-list the best boys from the back up pool and will hold a training camp for them in Lahore.

“Yes, we can introduce new faces in the Pakistan team in the coming series, but only after polishing them in the training camp at Lahore which should enable them to face international pressure with more authority and composure,” he said.

Commenting on the morale of the ODI team ahead of the five-match series against Australia and how it could be boosted, Inzamam said it was up to captain Azhar and head coach Arthur how they work with the boys to prepare them for the tough assignment. “But we have a good number of new and fresh players Down Under for the ODI series and it should be treated like a new challenge, though it will not be easy to shrug off the Test whitewash.

On the thorny issue of team management having its way in calling leg-spinner Mohammad Asghar as back-up for injured Yasir, Inzamam admitted that the bowler should have been tested since the team management had specifically asked for him.

He also agreed that as per the professional ethics, the team management should not demand any player by name but by his profile as spinner, fast bowler or batsman. “But I accepted the team management’s demand, believing that the captain and coach may have solid reasons to trust Asghar’s ability as a possible match-winner,” he said.

The first of the five ODI matches will be played in Brisbane on Jan 13.

Yeah, your selection policies have been nothing but ultra-defensive.

It's good to just talk and blow hot air.

You would know considering you're sill arguably the most defensive full time captain we have had in my lifetime

:facepalm: He should be dropped on the basis of his pathetic performance as a player in last 10 games. forget about what he thinks and make them accountable. No one is above country. If you cannot perform then please don't be a burden on the team and nation.

well despite that he achieved better results than Misbah had. Beaten India in India,SL in SL,India at home, England at home, fought bravely against SA in SA even though series ended 2-1..and most importantly he left a great team. those players are still considered valuable in our any team.

and he did that when other teams had great quality players ,the Indian team consisted of their all time legendary batting, similarly England who had just won Ashes after years, and Smith's SA which had the likes of Pollock,Kallis in their prime. and the SL team with the likes of Jaya,Samaraweera,Dilshan,Vass,Murali..

Misbah did better home and away apart from SA. Inzi didn't win in India.

Also Misbah drew in England whereas inzi lost 3-0

those were some notable performances. compare them with Misbah's and we will know wh has been better. Also Inzi lead from the front instead of Misbah only being reduced to phattas of UAE. Also Inzi build a great overall team not just look for some mystery spinners and hope to win the games by bowling them day out and forget the art of fast bowling completely. Also Misbah brought some promising youngsters like Asif who despite getting phainty in Australia was brought back because of mere talent. I doubt Misbah had such future insight.

Bowling was the major problem not batting. Batting did better than expected, bowling did worse. Of course, the slow batting helped Australia force a result in each match. But when you take only 33 wickets out of a total of possible 50 (as one match was an innings defeat) then you cannot expect the batting to do much.

:))

Then why did you select one of the most defensive ODI squads of all time?

Inzi feeling the full force of the attack right now. But what he has said is 100% true. Pak played too defensive and in turn it only made things a lot more difficult for them.

“Yes, we can introduce new faces in the Pakistan team in the coming series, but only after polishing them in the training camp at Lahore which should enable them to face international pressure with more authority and composure,”

i wonder what polishing was done by the great IK, when he thrust Inzi into the 92WC

And of course nothing in cricket has changed at all in the last 25 years.

That being said seems like half the current team isn't prepared for international pressure.

All tall talk of hopes but deliver nothing. This guy is worse than Haroon or Mohsin. Don't have any clue about players' strength. Why put Nawaz in the test squad when he does not have any confidence on him and brought Asghar? Please resign

4 Test series and 4 Odi series he has " CHANGED " 2 players

1. Hasan Ali

2. Mohammad Asghar

Record most consistent Chief Selector of any International Cricket team in last 20 years.

How can Inzimam comments on the players when he himself doesn't watch them playing on TV. At least his selection process and choices doesn't give an impression he watches domestics and nationa teams matches.

If after all his failure as a captain and as batsman, Misbah's future is " it's up to Misbah" then what exactly is Inzimam,s job. In other countries selectors pick the team and not a player pick himself.

“Now if that is the standard of our consistency, it is not good enough at the international level."

Inzamam Bhaee now its time you shun off your CONSISTENCY in selection.

Besides Imran Khan that too because of his overall Test record not because of his brilliance all other Fast bowlers need to go. Yes drop them. Seal the Test careers of 3 forever and only keep the gate open for 1 incase He improves his fitness and works on his technical deficiencies.

Wahab & Rahat are as good as those previous Pak Test pacers whose Career ended at 24 and 20 Tests. They are no Waqar, Imran, Wasim to be given 80 plus Tests. They aren't even Shoaib to be given 46 Tests. Don't give them a rope like Umar Gul needlessly though Gul was better than them both.

Sohail is better than both Rahat & Wahab skillwise but his age and poor fitness means its time to Seal his Test Career forever aswell.

Now do justice and drop 4 out of the 5 Test bowlers for tour of West Indies.

Inzi lost 2: 1 against india in pakistan under ganguly

Inzi's team drawn the test series and won the ODI series in India.

Misbah won an ODI series in India too. And that too at a time when it was practically impossible for an ODI side to beat the World Champions at home.. Misbah is galaxies ahead in terms of captaincy.

You would know considering you're sill arguably the most defensive full time captain we have had in my lifetime

If he failed does that make what he is saying wrong? he is the selector, remember that

Yes, whilst the Pakistani batting has its flaws, it performed better than the fielding and the bowling.

In historical perspective as well, when looking at Test series in Australia, Pakistani batting has only averaged more per wicket in 1983-84 and 1976-77. On all other tours to Australia they averaged less per wicket than this current tour. In fact in a 3 Test series they have never scored more runs in Australia than they did this time.

So whilst far from perfect, the batting was not in fact the main reason for the failure in Australia.

I totally agree with this post.

Misbah is not even near to captain Inzamam in achievements. You have nicely put up stats in favor of it.I still remember, when Inzamam beat India 4-2 after coming from behind 0-2 in ODIS in India with 2 key fast bowlers not playing due to injury,Ravi Shastri in presentation ceremony said to Inzamam that tum to kamal ki cheez ho .These few words just explained Injamam's legacy in that series against a fully strong Indian side.
