A man who had picked up his 11-year-old daughter to celebrate her birthday is in police custody after her body was found in his basement apartment, and he'll soon be facing charges, police in Brampton, Ont., said Friday.

Peel police are expected to provide an update into the investigation starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Roopesh Rajkumar, 41, was arrested after an Amber Alert was issued around 11 p.m. Thursday in the search for Riya Rajkumar. Her body was found about an hour later in his apartment in the city, which is about 30 kilometres northwest of Toronto. Peel Regional Police Const. Danny Marttini also confirmed a homicide investigation is underway.

Marttini said Riya's mother initially contacted police to report her daughter hadn't been returned to her at the agreed time of 6:30 p.m. Riya did not live with her father full time, police said, but had been dropped off at a gas station in neighbouring Mississauga at around 3 p.m. so he could take her out to celebrate her birthday.

Her mother had received concerning messages from Roopesh, her former boyfriend, that indicated he intended to hurt himself and their daughter.

"She came in already fully concerned saying, 'This is what he's saying to me, I'm concerned for the well-being of my daughter, I need some help,"' Marttini said. "Obviously our investigators took action right away."

After several hours of fruitless investigation, an Amber Alert was issued but cancelled after officers found Riya's body, Marttini explained.

Rajkumar was arrested by OPP on Highway 11 near Orillia, about 130 kilometres north of Brampton, around midnight, after a caller reported seeing the silver Honda Civic described in the Amber Alert.

Rajkumar was transferred to the custody of Peel police overnight and it's expected he will be charged, said Marttini. Officers will meet with Crown lawyers Friday afternoon to discuss what specific charges he may face.

"Because there is a level of the severity of the case, there's obviously the potential for first-degree (murder), second-degree or manslaughter," Marttini said.

"My heart aches for this family and as a parent, I can't even begin to imagine what the mom is going through."

On Friday morning, Riya's elementary school sent an email to families to tell them counsellors would be on hand to support her friends and classmates for "as long as they are needed."

"This tragedy has brought tremendous sadness to the students and staff at Meadowvale Village Public School," the email read.

"Riya was a well-liked student, and her death is deeply felt by everyone at the school."

Staff at the school have set up a memorial for Riya in the foyer, it added.

'It's sickening and it's sad'
Several people stopped by the scene outside Rajkumar's Brampton home to leave flowers and pay their respects.

Emmanuel Okafor, who lives nearby, paused near the home, clasped his hands and said a silent prayer.

"It's sickening and it's sad," she said.

An Amber Alert is a special bulletin issued (on cellphones, television and through other forms of media) when someone under 18 is abducted and believed to be in imminent danger. In order to meet the criteria for an alert, police must also have a description of either a suspect or a suspect vehicle.

Communications officers with Peel police revealed on social media that the force had received a series of complaints from residents that the Amber Alert was issued at a late hour.

"I can't even begin to describe how disappointing and upsetting it is to read the comments, emails and calls to our communications bureau complaining about receiving an Amber Alert late at night," wrote Const. Akhil Mooken on Twitter.

"I appreciate that a lot of people were sleeping, but the immediate need to locate the child outweighed the momentary inconvenience that some people encountered," he continued. "Tragically this incident did not have the outcome we were all hoping for but the suspect was located as a direct result of a citizen receiving the alert and calling 911. The system works."

What is the world coming to? It's disgusting and shameful how people were complaining about the amber alert last night just because they got woken up. I have lost all faith in humanity now.

As for the father, I hope he gets TORTURED in prison. How could you?

Terrible, terrible! Canada was so famous once upon a time as polite good nation.

This is nothing new, people were upset with amber alerts before too.

God forbid their precious sleep is disturbed in an effort to save a kid. The car was apparently last spotted on the 401 when the alert went out, so it had a very good chance of working out if someone on the 401 saw the alert. Too bad it was a bit too late though.

The Amber Alert wasn't even that late, pathetic from some folks to call 9-1-1 just because their precious sleep was disturbed. Filth of the earth.

I read the Amber Alert on my phone and it said 11 year old Riya Rajkumar is missing and suspect is Roopesh Rajkumar. Seeing the same last names I thought it was just the father and the kid would be returned safe. In Canada it happens fairly often when the parents are divorced and the child is with one parent more than agreed time the other parent calls the police if they can't get in touch. Then maybe half-n-hour later the second alert came saying the girl has been found and the Amber Alert has been cancelled. I was like oh thank God.

Now I'm reading this pathetic father actually killed his 11 year old daughter. I think Canada does not have the death penalty but they need to make an exception for this vermin.

My friend jus told.me the same thing that the alert said 'Girl has been found' ,that is so misleading imo but they can't write 'girl found dead either' .

it was the girls birthday. Really felt gutted reading this

Keep your religion away from this. It does not help one bit and I'm talking from personal experiences which I won't dive any deeper into.

You can ignore him/her as that is his/her personal beliefs.

Terrible, terrible! Canada was so famous once upon a time as polite good nation.

That politeness is mostly cosmetic as it is limited to “please” and “thank you”.

Countless Canadian complaint about late night Amber Alert.

Belief in God and religion are two separate things so lets not conflate the two.
