We often talk of world XIs, it is quite fun and always gets the juices flowing, so I thought, why not one with slightly different rules. So, one player from every decade, from 1900 to the 00s, with a few basic guidelines you need to follow.

For any player to be considered pre-1950, they have to have played at least 10 test matches in that particular decade, post 1950, they have to have played at least 15 test matches in that particular decade. This is simply to offset the increase in global cricket over the years.

So here I go:

1. Jack Hobbs - 1910s
2. Len Hutton - 1940s
3. Don Bradman - 1930s
4. Ricky Ponting - 2000s
5. Walter Hammond - 1920s
6. Garfield Sobers - 1960s
7. Imran Khan c - 1980s
8. Rodney Marsh wk - 1970s
9. Richie Benaud - 1950s
10. Wasim Akram - 1990s
11. Sydney Barnes - 1900s

It should be Allen Knott for 1970s, if it’s to be a WK. I’ll rather take Gilchrist from 2000s and replace Ponting with Viv from 1970s.

Richie Benaud was never an ATG , all other were.

You have no idea what you have written here ...

In this squad, he'll be the Captain. And, he'll be the Captain of all-time AUS Test XI as well.

I have a 2nd look at the squad and probably will make a little change -

Hutton actually wasn't the best player of 1940s - we can think of dropping him from 1940s team (Bradman still was best in 1940s) and pick Alec Bedsar from 1940s and drop Syd Barnes for Vic Trumper from 1900s.

1. Hobbs
2. Trumper
3. Viv
4. Hammond
5. Bradman
6. Sobers
7. Gilchrist+
8. Imran
9. *Benaud
10. Wasim
11. Bedsar

Lindwall for Bedser he was a better bowler throughout Bedser did well in the early 50s after Bradman had retired more rain and helpful pitches probably the main reason.
Possibly McGrath for Wasim but a left handed gives more variety Viv at 5 and Bradman at 3 would be another change.

True, a much better batsman as well, but I think in 1940s, Bedsar had better figures. Also, Bedsar was almost 29 by the time war ended and we have seen very little of his best years, but RR Lindwall for Bedsar hardly matters - both were better than Syd Barnes, whose career stats were built from early day's SAF bashing: 83 wickets in 7 Tests at <10; his Ashes record of 104 wickets @ 21 is below average for contemporary cricket. From 1950s, I'll also take Benaud over Truman or Miller, because of his Captaincy and the Leg spin, but KR Miller was probably the cricketer of 1950s, while Truman the best fast bower ever before DK Lillee emerged. From 1990s, more than Mac, Warne was closer to Wasim, who was truly the champion of 1990s, was a far better batsman than any of the other 5 as well - Warne, Mac, Ambrose, Donald & WY.

Bradman's stats at 3 (at any position) is beyond reach by any standard, but I like the most dominant batsman at 3 and the run machine at 4 - so, Bradman can exchange with Hammond (who was probably the best ever No. 4 at prime), but at 3, I'll definitely play a peak Viv. Viv Richards of 1979 Frank Worrell Trophy was the ultimate No. 3 that the game has ever seen and I don't think any batsman can be so good against absolute flat out, skillful fast bowling.

You do not have a clue as to how good Benaud was.

Close call between those two but Marsh just pips it for me.

Khan was the superior captain but it would be amazing having someone like Benaud as your number two.
