My 12 best cricketers of all time in order of merit combining test matches and ODI's equally. Excludes any great cricketer who has not played ODI cricket or not more than 12 ODI games .Equal emphasis given on tests and ODIS.

1.Viv Richards-Decimated or intimidated opposition more than anyone and best match-winner.At top because he was also an all-time great captain unlike Sachin.Best of all ODI batsmen who championed finals in tournaments.Never lost a test series as a skipper from 1985-91.In peak period in combined cricket best of all batsmen. No cricketer delivered a greater death blow. His batting average in world cups speaks for itself ,as well as in 1977-78 in WSC supertests and when averaging over 118 in 4 tests in England in 1976 or 96.50 in Australia in 1979-80.Great cricketers have read Viv as more daunting than even Sachin or Lara, including those from later eras.

2.Sachin Tendulkar-The most complete of all batsmen whose staggering figures of 100 centuries is a yardstick for everyone. Not the greatest match-winner but for longevity the ultimate champion.Mastered any kind of conditions with consistency unmatched.Still did not win as many games as he could have lanking consistency in delivering a knockout punch.

3.Wasim Akram-Endowed with genius which arguably no pace bowler ever posessed with his magical variations.Even if Mcgrath had better stats it was Wasim who was morally the more impactful in all types of conditions.Best ever ODI bowler. For a period also a very successful test and ODI captain.Rated high also because he won more man of the match awards than any fast bowler of his time.

4.Shane Warne-The best match-wining cricketer of his day and leg-spinner ever who gave the art of leg spin a new definition.Above all played the biggest role in Australia's rise to an almost invincible cricketing power.

5.Imran Khan-Arguably the most charismatic cricketer ever who shaped his nation's destiny as none ever did.As a skipper took hi steam to reach the pedestal of joint unofficial world test champion sin 1988 in West Indies and official world ODI champion sin the 1992 world cup. From 1981-87 the best all-rounder in the world and at his peak close to the bets ever bowler .Although not attacking,Imran played some of the most defining innings in tests and ODI's ,becoming a great batsman towards the end of his career.I can never forget his bowling spells v India at Karchi and Hyderabad in 1982-83,at Leeds in 1987,at Trinidada and Georgetown in 1988 and earlier at Sydney in 1976-77.Close to the greatest of match-winners and all-time great captains.

6.Jacques Kallis-In terms of figures the best cricketer ever and arguably the 2nd best all-rounder of all time,if not the best.A model of consistency who at his peak also championed cause with the ball. However often did not step the gas to the extent required and scored bulk of runs against weaker opposition. To bat for your life he was the best of all all-rounders and also had some big scores versus Australia. Not great with both bat and ball at same time like Sobers.

7.Virat Kohli-Figures speak for themselves and he is the only one likey to emulate Sachin Tendulkar.Possesses match-winning killer instinct more than any batsmen today being a master in manouvering matches around him.

8.Brian Lara-No batsmen was blessed with more creative genius or natural talent or who could single-handedly win games for his team.At his best a better match-winner than even Tendulkar.

9.Richard Hadlee-The best ever bowler on green tops with a staggering haul of scalps as well as 5 and 10 wicket hauls, inspite of spearheading bowling attack of such a weak team. The most clinical pacemen of his day with more control than Lillee and Roberts. Also a more than useful batsmen.

10.Glen Mcgrath- Staistically the best ever bowler ,posessing more control and more relentless than anyone.-,with possible exception of Garner,Ambrose and Hadlee.Won 84 test matches for his country

11.Javed Miandad-Not the most elegant or technically correct but a master craftsman and ultimate one to niggle opponents or be a scourge in their eyes.Manipulated a cricket ball with great precision and imagination to be the biggest thorn in the flesh to opposition in a crisis. The one I would wish to have most in the climax of an ODI run chase,to steer a side across the line.

12.Ricky Ponting-One of the best players of genuine pace, front foot batsman and best exponents of the pull and hook shot ever. One of the architects in building the Australian cricketing empire taking his nation to the top of the pedestal in both forms of the game,as a player and captain.Arguably after Bradman no Australian batsman dominated bowling to the degree of Ricky, who looked like an ultimate batting machine. At one stage looked likely to rival Tendulkar ,but then declined after 2007.Not outstanding against spin or on turning surfaces .He also had an advantage of representing a champion side, thus not ranked with Tendulkar or Lara.

My list:
1. McGrath: top 2 bowler for both tests and ODI's, don't know how he is so low. Vs Akram for example, he is a much better test bowler, and they are very close in ODI cricket. For Warne, similar in test and much better in ODI. Not sure how you calculated the 84 tests won. If that was true he would be the goat by a mile, above Bradman
2. Tendulkar: 2nd of all time for me in ODI, about 5th for tests so very ranks highly
3. Viv Richards: the GOAT ODI bat, and top 10 in test cricket
4. Gilchrist: the GOAT test keeper bat, and top 2 with Dhoni in ODI's
5. Hadlee: top 5 test cricketer of all time, carried a weak team. Brilliant ODI bowler as well
6. Murali: top 3 test spinner, and the GOAT ODI spinner
7. Donald: top 5-10 test bowler and top 5 ODI bowler.
8. Akram: top 10-15 test bowler and top 2 ODI bowler. Feel like overrated by OP due to aesthetics when his test performance while obviously really good doesn't stack up to the best
9. Pollock: top 5 ODI player, and 15-20 test bowler. Very underrated
10. Imran Khan: top 5 test player of all time, and very good ODI player. His ODI exploits are perhaps overrated though, not as good as his contemporary Dev in that form
11. Brian Lara: top 10 test bat, top 10 ODI bat. Brilliant to watch as well, but that doesn't impact my ratings
12. ABdV: top 5 ODI bat, top 25 test bat. Ridiculous ODI record. Could be ranked higher if cared more about his country, playing more tests
Feel like your lit was generally good, but a few errors - McGrath too low, Akram too high, Kallis too high, no gilchrist/pollock

no never Sachin at top not good enough.
Viv Richards is the GOAT along with Wasim Akram
Shane warne Brian Lara and Imran khan comes after that.

Why is Lara above Sachin, Sachin much better ODI bat. And how is Akram above McGrath, Donald

Shane warne doesn't belong in top 10.
Sangakkara, Pollock, donald, chappell, dev, stokes all ahead of miandad.
Sangakkara and murali should be included.
Agree with other selections.

Greatly appreciate choices, particularly of Kohli .Mcgrath ,Viv and Sachin.Good list but questionable rankings.

Like mine?My order correct?

You rank Wasim very low who is almost at the top with his batting and bowling as well as Warne who was the best match-winner of his day.Why is Mcgrath above Warne oe even Wasim ,Sachin or Viv?

Great compilation bro.

I really like seeing Sir Richard Hadlee up there. Many people these days just do not recognise the giant he was in his playing days.

My question to you is, are you waiting for Kohli to retire before ranking him in these lists. You reckon he can make your Top 12 in let's say 5 years provided he keeps his test average above 50 and has a good world cup before retirement.

Also What does Steve Smith has to do to get in this list.

Thanks in advance. Cheers

Great choices and analytical ranking .appreciate a lot.

I question why you place Warne below Mcgrath who was the greatest match-winner of hi s day or even Tendulkar ahead with his phenomenal record and longevity .Why Kapil Dev above Kallis with the most staggering stats of any cricketer or even Richard Hadlee or Ricky Ponting?Kapil wasa genius but compare relative performances and to me all overshadow him.No doubt Kapil was a greater entertainer or match winner than Kallis but was eclipsed by Kalis as an all round cricketer in both versions. To me Kallis ranked too low and should be in 6-10,in 2nd tier.

Finally applaud your choice on Viv.well done.Good or analytical bracketing or categorization.Good ranking of Kohli but arguably Kapil too high.Ofcoures debatable.Like your reasons.

Great work.Deeply appreciate analytical asessment.

Still why Mcgrath above Viv who was overall more impactful and better match-winner?

Or even Tendulkar below Mcgrath with his uncomparable record of 100 centuries?Gilchrist too high.

Noway was Donald above Wasim.Compare records in all respects.Waim has over 900 scalps and many more 5 and 4 wicket hauls. In peak era better strike rate from 19980-98.

ABDV could be higher with phenomenal strike rtae in ODIS and batting avergae of 50 in both forms of cricket.

No Ricky Ponting who was stats wise a strong contender to Sachin?

Finally Warne is an absolute must-how excluded with his record-best match-winner of his time.

Good points. I will respond.

Glenn McGrath is arguably the second greatest Test bowler of all-time in my opinion and arguably GOAT (or 2nd) in ODIs. So, he truly deserved to be at the top ahead of Shane Warne who although is a GOAT in tests but below Murali and Saqlain in ODIs. So, McGrath at 2 and Warne at 5. Ofcourse, I am assuming we are giving equal emphasis on Test and ODIs here. If it was Tests, Warne would have been ahead of even McGrath.

Kapil Dev is an ATG ODI cricketer and ATG test cricketer. Kallis is a top tier Test ATG but not so much in ODIs. You can call him a country great in ODIs, known for useful and consistent contributions with both bat and bowl but ODIs is more about impact. Kapil Dev led his team to a World Cup win in 1983 which is why he was revered the most in India ahead of even Gavaskar.

very well answered.Touch and go with Kapil and you have done well on him.Stats do not always tell the true story. Was not Ponting great in ODI's and ahead of Kapil overall ?Morally was Wasim below Mcgrath in combined cricket? What about Javed Miandad?

Why does Warne not belong here with such a super record?

Why does Warne not belong here with such a super record?
Warne is the greatest test spinner ever but i didn't include him in this list for the same reason that you didn't include malcolm marshall. Both of them had good record in odis but nowhere near elite level.

McGrath was a better matchwinner than both of them. Bowlers generally are, and McGrath has a magnificent record everywhere in every format. His world cup record especially stands out, just brilliant. The way he targeted the best batsmen in the opposition, and how he had such a high %of top order wickets means he is perhaps and the most effective bowler of all time.

Gilchrist isn't too high. Undisputed number 1 in his field in tests, and top 2 in ODI's. Has a ridiculous record in WC finals. Completely changed what was expected of a WK bat. Struggling to see why you didn't include him.

Wasim's more scalps are due to more matches, principally because donald didn't play international cricket earlier in his career - they both retired at similar ages.

Your sstrike rate point i just wrong; Donald in tests Donald struck at 46.1n and Wasim struck at 20.93. In ODI's Donald struck at 31.3 and Wasim struck at 36.1 People will notice if you make up stats.

All the players above ABdV are top 25 players in both forms, with the possible exception of Imran and Pollock, who I rate top 5 in their respective formats. De Villiers isn't. Top 50 player in test cricket so he is lower despite being a top ODI player

Ricky Ponting isn't statswise a contender to Tendulkar, a tier below in test cricket and way worse in ODI's.
Who does Warne replace, brilliant test bowler, but his ODI record isn't comparable to Murali. Even Saqlain has a better record, but I'd probably still rate warne higher due to his efforts in WC's

Please notify that Wasim had many more ODI scalps and man of the match awards in ODI's and in peak era a better averse and strike rate in tests. Also consider Wasim bowled on flat sub-continent tracks in half his games where his record is better than Donald.Donald may have better tset stats but no way in ODIS.

Wasim has a better average during his peak, but not SR, I posted the stats above (please read stuff I post) and Donald kills Wasim on SR

Throughout their careers, Wasim won 21 man of the match awards in 356 games - at a frequency of 1 every 17 games
Donald won 9 in 164 - at a frequency of 1 every 18 games. Not much to split them their

in Asia in ODI's, Akram averages 23.41 while Donald averages 19.6. Please ensure that your statistics are correct as these are rubbish
Outside of Asia, Donald averages 22.3 while Wasim averages 23.6.
Donald is better in both types of conditions. If you are going to use statistics, make them decent ones that are true

In tests Donald obviously has a better record

Do you now believe that the placement of ABdV, McGrath and Gilchrist is reasonable?

Thoughts on this Harsh Thakor

Viv Richards
Wasim Akram
Sachin Tendulkar
Bradman
Kallis
Steve Smith
Kohli
Ponting
McGrath
Warne
Murali.

My list:

Great list. Forgot about Gilchrist myself. Only feel that Murali should be higher

Finally,

The moment all my followers have been waiting for.

Bhaijaan's Greatest 12 cricketers who ever played Tests and ODIs, after giving equal weightage to both formats :-

1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. Allan Donald
3. Viv Richards
4. Kapil Dev
5. Mutiah Muralitharan
6. Shaun Pollock
7. Glenn McGrath
8. Wasim Akram
9.. Ricky Ponting
10. Virat Kohli
11. Shane Warne
12. Waqar Younis

Honourable mentions to Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, Javed Miandad, Jaques Kallis, Kumar Sangakkara, Kevin Pieterson, Dale Steyn, Shane Bond, Ross Taylor, Brett Lee, Imran Khan etc who were all good players overall combining both formats but not quite Top 12 level.

How are they pointless if they are enjoyable conversations that help people grow their knowledge of the game

you can only be a great in your own era so yes it's pointless. Split the GOAT category up with era GOATS.

70s
80s
90s
2000s

Rules have changed over time so that needs to be accounted for.

Firmly agree with you on this Tyron.

A player has to be greatest of his era in his playing position in a given format. That's all a player has to or vam achieve.

Cannot mix up formats and even batting positions imo.

Greatest opener or Greatest middle over batsman also are two different things. Can't compare Gavaskar to Tendulkar, Sehwag to Lara,

Many come on this forum, because they enjoy discussing cricket. If one enjoys this discussion, which obviously many do, then by definition it is not pointless

I agree with this, but this does not make the comparisons inherently pointless

Although I also agree with my brother The Real AB that it's a lot of fun debating over these things although it's very subjective and somewhat pointless.

I could never place Donald above Wasim who was supreme with 916 scalps and best tset bolwer in peak as well as in sub-continent.Aggregate spaek sfor itself.

Kapil Dev above Imran Khan with the great record of Imran as a skipper in both formsof the game and more consistency as batsmen in later period?Imran overall won more games.

Javed Miandad excluded who championed a crisis best in both forms of the game?

With such amazing stats no Virat Kohli?

actually even in the same era, it can be difficult to compare players when one individual plays for a weaker side vs a player who represents a stronger team.

bowlers generally hunt in pairs. We don't know how good a player like srinath could have been had he played alongside a great support bowler rather than Prasad.

We don't know how well ponting for example would fare vs his own Australian bowlers had he played for a weaker side.

Anyway go on with your discussion.

Great list, applaud your evaluation of Viv at top , Wasim and Kallis. However Bradman never played ODI's,so has to be excluded...Why Wasim above Tendulkar with the phenomenal aggregate of Sachin and longevity? Also why Smith above Kolhli with the latter's record in ODI's and aggregate runs and hundreds overall?

I didn't write the names in any order. Don't read from top to bottom.

Also, replace Bradman with Sangakara then.

Wasim Akram
Sachin Tendulkar

Thanks for your review brother.

Allan Donald for me is greatest ever along with Malcolm Marshall. Wasim Akram is also there in my list, ranked at #8. These are all wonderful cricketers, in whichever order you out them some players willl be ranked 8,9,10,11,12.

Kapil Dev is greatest pure AR ever in my.opinion.
Imran is also good but he isn't a great ODI cricketer.

Javed Miandad is good but so are many other cricketers who also missed my Top 12. Only 12 cricketers can be in Top 12 and Javed Miandad isn't Top 12 as per the criteria of this topic in my opinion. Which batsman would he replace in my list?

Kohli is ranked at #10. You missed that. He's in the list bro.

Appreciate your spirit .well done.Like to know why you rate Alan Donald at the top and Kapil?Ahead of Wasim and Imran?Ofcourse you have aright to your viewpoint.

1. Allan Donald's record speaks for himself. Rather I would like to know why Donald at the top is a surprise for you?

2. Kapil Dev was better vs West Indies. It's the same reason I rate Kallis, Sangakkara lower in this era. They didn't dominate the greatest team.of their era

What is the definition and eligibility criteria of pure All-rounder, Bhaijaan?

I have very high standards for all rounders which is why most players I do not count as all rounders.
