Du Plessis to captain World XI against Pakistan in Independence Cup

Star-studded squad comprises players from seven Test playing countries; Lahore to stage T20Is on 12, 13 and 15 September.

Du Plessis: “I look forward to my maiden tour to Lahore and play my part in the safe and gradual resumption of international cricket in Pakistan”

Najam Sethi: “This will be an auspicious moment for Pakistan cricket and I am positive that it will serve to open the doors of international cricket in Pakistan”

Sarfaraz Ahmad: “I am confident that following the success of these matches, Pakistan will not only host regular international series but at other international cricket centres as well”

Andy Flower: “All the players are satisfied and comfortable with the security arrangements that will be put in place for the series and happy to be part of the first step towards the safe return of international cricket to Pakistan"

The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced a star-studded 14-member World XI, which comprises players from seven Test playing countries and will be captained by South Africa’s Faf du Plessis. The World XI will play three Twenty20 Internationals for the Independence Cup against Pakistan under lights at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on 12, 13 and 15 September.

The World XI includes five players from South Africa, three from Australia, two from the Windies, and one each from Bangladesh, England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Apart from du Plessis, who is South Africa’s Test captain, the World XI also includes England’s ICC World Twenty20 2010 winning captain Paul Collingwood, who scored 108* off 68 balls in a T20 Blast game against Worcester in July; Windies’ Darren Sammy, who inspired his side to ICC World Twenty20 titles in 2012 and 2016; former number-one ranked Test batsman Hashim Amla; Bangladesh’s explosive opener Tamim Iqbal; Australia’s former ODI and T20I captain George Bailey; David Miller of South Africa, who is considered as one of the best finishers in modern day cricket, as well as T20I specialist Grant Elliott, who famously steered New Zealand to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 final with a last-ball six against South Africa in Auckland.

The World XI for the Independence Cup is:

1. Faf du Plessis (captain) (South Africa)

2. Hashim Amla (South Africa)

3. Samuel Badree (Windies)

4. George Bailey (Australia)

5. Paul Collingwood (England)

6. Ben Cutting (Australia)

7. Grant Elliott (New Zealand)

8. Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh)

9. David Miller (South Africa)

10. Morne Morkel (South Africa)

11. Tim Paine (wicketkeeper) (Australia)

12. Thisara Perera (Sri Lanka)

13. Imran Tahir (South Africa)

14. Darren Sammy (Windies)

Former Zimbabwe captain and ex-England coach Andy Flower will be the coach of the side, which will arrive in Lahore on 11 September after attending a two-day camp in Dubai.

World XI captain Faf du Plessis said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as captain of such a diverse, attractive and well-balanced side. Like most of the players, I look forward to my maiden tour to Lahore and play my part in the safe and gradual resumption of international cricket in Pakistan.

“All the members of the squad have complete faith and trust in the assessment and judgement of the security experts, who have assured us that there will be no comprise on the safety and security of all those involved in the series. As professionals, we are getting paid to play in the series, but the bottom-line is that if we didn’t feel safe, no amount of money would get us there. In this background, we will land in Lahore with nothing except cricket in our minds.

“In my career, I have featured in some very exciting matches against Pakistan but playing Pakistan in front of its passionate supporters will be a unique occasion, which I can’t wait to experience. As a player, I understand the importance of playing in front of home crowds and that is something I’m sure the Pakistan players will relish.”

PCB Chairman Najam Sethi said: “On behalf of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the cricket loving public, I welcome the ICC World XI team to Pakistan to play in the three-match TI series.

“This will be an auspicious moment for Pakistan cricket and I am positive that it will serve to open the doors of international cricket in Pakistan. Kenya and Zimbabwe have already been here and featured in high-voltage matches with rapturous crowds.

“Recently, we successfully organized the final of the PSL’s second edition in Lahore, which proved to be a catalyst in gaining the confidence of the international community to come and play here. Now we are on the threshold of an exciting series between the winners of the Champions Trophy and am ICC in team boasting the top cricketing stars from seven nations.

“I would like to congratulate Mr. Giles Clarke, Chairman of ICC's Pakistan Task Force, for helping facilitate the revival of international cricket in Pakistan. I am confident that this World XI tour shall be a harbinger of other full member nations visiting us in the months to come.”

Hashim Amla, who visited Pakistan with Graeme Smith’s side in 2007, said: “I am looking forward to the trip to Pakistan. The rehabilitation of my injured shoulder is progressing well and I am confident of being fit for the matches.

World XI coach Andy Flower , who visited Pakistan in 1993, 1996 and 1998 with the Zimbabwe cricket teams, said: “I have enjoyed all my previous tours to Pakistan and look forward to returning to Lahore next month.

“All the players are satisfied and comfortable with the security arrangements that will be put in place for the series and happy to be part of the first step towards the safe return of international cricket to Pakistan.

“We now look forward to playing some exciting cricket so that we can entertain the Lahore crowd, which has waited long enough to see local as well as international stars live in action in their backyard.”

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said: “I am really excited to see the World XI team coming to Pakistan and keenly look forward to playing in front of our committed crowds and supporters. I can assure all Pakistan cricket fans that we have missed playing in front of them, like they have missed watching us live in action. But this wait is about to end and I am sure better times lie ahead of all of us.

“I am confident that through this tour of the World XI, the global cricket community, including players, media and visitors will get a better understanding and perception of Pakistan, which is a peace-loving and extremely hospitable nation that loves its cricket.

“I would like to congratulate the PCB and ICC for making this tour happen, and look forward to some exciting matches in front of the packed Gaddafi Stadium. I am confident that following the success of these matches, Pakistan will not only host regular international series but at other international cricket centres as well.”

Very strong squad, only an Indian player is missing.

Very very unfair by BCCI. When players from all over the World are helping to bring back Cricket in Pakistan, BCCI and it's players are doing exactly the opposite.

The squad is much more stronger than I had imagined.

What a lie. Even players from zimbabwe, ireland and afghanistan are missing, when they have so much time. indian players just have a busy calendar and they need to be booked at least a year ahead.

the likes of Robin Uthappa or Piyush Chaawla could easily have been accommodated.

Very good squad.
Andy Flower has done a commendable job with the help of ICC.

Wish the world XI and PCB best of luck, hoping the tour goes as planned.

Enjoy the t20 series, and i wish Pakistan hosts many more series in the near future.

A really good squad that is. I was expecting a team of 'fatichar players'.

Well done to the organisers.

Oh my goodness! I can't believe this. I was expecting a team full of expats and losers really. I will go to Lahore to watch this game under ANY circumstances.

Moeen Ali would have come as well but he's busy with the West Indies

very strong squad.

That World XI is so good that I can actually see them beating Pakistan !! which is great from the POV of competitiveness, well done PCB !

Thanks bro!! We really have been deprived of quality cricket games in Pakistan and I can't wait any longer to watch international stars in action.

Am so excited as well even though I won't be there lol there are about 3 games right ? all have ICC status i think

Oh hell?! I didn't realize that. I'm so happy with these cricketers that have come forward, I'll be supporting them instead of Pakistan. :))) Honestly with this small gesture, all these blokes have made some die hard fans for life.

Looks a strong squad. It's great if you can manage to bring in such top players. I know players will agree if top level security is always provided.

I think even despite the costs this series will churn out some profit. The challenge ofcourse is whether PCB can ensure much profit in the long run especially with BCCI not agreeing anytime soon

Am sure every Pakistani will be cheering them on ! it's also fitting that Faf is the captain and is touring as well, it's in line with the kind of man he is; have so much respect for him. We need our team to be at their best in order to win, I know there have been calls for Afridi , Khan and Misbah to feature as a fair well but they need to be able to make the team on merit first because the goal is to win ! Outside Afridi given his recent exploits don't see the other two featuring in terms of merit but we probably have better options to replace them anyway although Pakistan fans would love to see them due to nostalgia

Much stronger squad than I expected, should be a competitive series. Badree, Tahir, and Miller are top quality T20 cricketers, and Amla and Du Plessis aren't bad either. I guess Paul Collingwood is the only dud selection, but is probably just there for the sake of having an Englishman. Thisara Perera raises some eyebrows too, hasn't done anything of note for a long time

the intl xi looks very strong. pleasantly surprised didnt think the likes of Amla and Faf would come.

Whatever people think about Sethi being a political appointee but he has done a great job in trying to bring intl cricket back to Pakistan. First the PSL final and now this.

Props to him.

I have always had tremendous amounts of respect for Faf. For the debut innings, for his leadership skills, for his commitment to South Africa and most importantly for the man he is. And now, after being one of the finest cricketers to be playing the game currently, he's coming to Pakistan as part of a peace promoting event, it just speaks volumes about the man's character.

my world 11 team:

1)Amla

My World XI team for 1st match:

H Amla

Good squad, looks like ICC is serious after all, luckily for Sethi he LL get all the credit.

Congratulations to all the PCT fans, hopefully you guys can enjoy home game intl quality at last and share pics.

Flat_Track_Bully must be elated, saw him being optimistic on all "intl cricket return to Pakistan " threads.

Congrats, good squad contrary to everyone's belief.

Good stuff. Hope the Pakistani authorities can eliminate any terror threats

This is very exciting. They did a fantastic job getting quality players. This will be a competitive series. Assuming all goes well T20Is Sri Lanka will get their series set and I think you will see regular T20I tours, which is a good first step.

The next step is to develop security plans and to reopen Karachi and Rawalpindi or Sialkot for international matches.

collingwood and bailey have kept before.

Collingwood lol?

Isn't he a coach now?

Still playing county cricket, hit his first t20 100 the other day. Part of England's coaching staff for the Ashes this winter but has confirmed he'll still be playing county cricket next year.

Poor World XI team.

Du plesis is a bad ODI player. Grant Elliott is mediocre. Amla is decent. Collingwood is useless. Tamim is good. David Miller was struggling against India A team. A total hack and a sitting duck against Spin.

Overall, Batting is mediocre.

Bowling is much better. Morkel/Tahir and Badree are good. Thisara Perara is mediocre. Sammy is mediocre.

Pak would easily win against this World XI.

when you think about it, its sorta perfect

you want a team with big name players, but not necessarily great current players. You want a team that gets attention but that you can still beat

the World XI game is a marketing stunt and to prove a point more than anything else after all

Collingwood is still playing for Durham after all these years. Averaging 52.53 in County this season.

Hope the series goes off without incident and good pitches are prepared. The pitch used for the PSL final in Lahore was poor.

There are so many English county cricketers of decent stature that would be happy to tour Pakistan. I even think KP could be convinced now seeing the fact Miller, Faf and Morkel agreed.

Not the strongest World XI, considering that there are few retired players; but for the purpose, I believe it's a much better collection; so credit must be ti PCB & it's Chairman. I was expecting mostly BD, SRL, ZIM & WI players, but there are 8 white players, 4 of them active Internationals, while 2 former English & Aussie Captain as well, which is great for the purpose. Since he is ready to play in Lahore, Bailey should be open to play few PSL matches in PAK as well.

If it goes without any major incidence, next step should be to put a clause in PSL draft that players must have to be ready to play few/some matches in PAK. If $100K can reduce life threat for 4 days, $200K+ should do for 8 days as well. But, key is here successful arrangement - I back Najam Sethi not to repeat an Ijaz Butt here.

Tamim Iqbal can also be the Wicket Keeper.

In T20, WKs role isn't much difficult than 1st baseman (Baseball), therefore any decent 1st slip fielder can do it. I read an analysis some where that average gather by a WL in T20 is about 12 balls, edges less than 2, but understandably higher stamping chances that ODI.

Best back-up WK in this squad is probably Miller.

Man this is great. I wouldn't be surprised if WXI wins the series, there are some great players.

What exactly would be a world XI?

Warner

Kohli
De Villiers
Miller/Maxwell
Stokes
Butler
Narine
Starc

This team would be impossible to assemble

Kudos to PCB, this is a decent to good squad and it will be exciting games. Now, make sure that the pitches are good.

Id swap Miller/Maxwell with KL Rahul and R Sharma with S Dhawan.

Very happy right now. Its been a long few years and staying positive is difficult.

This team would be impossible to assemble

I presume, it's for T20.

I'll take Virat for Sharma to open with Warner (Gayle is still devastating on the day he survives for few overs, but that frequency is alarmingly low these days) & Smith at 3, because he is in great form and he & VK are the 2 players to stable the innings on a low scoring surface - rest are basically hitter.

Morkel goes out for Hasan or Mustafiz - I tend to like Hasan now for his old ball skills and he is in great form; if Mustafiz can regain his fitness, he is the best T20 bowler around in later stages. Tight between Narine, Jadeja & Sakib, but may be Narine is fine if Umpires are happy. For T20, my leggi'll be Shadab, because he saves more runs in field that Tahir'll ever score & he can bat, importantly bat at a brisk pace. 12th man Pandeya - just missing out to Stokes.

Warner, VK, Smith, AB
Stokes, Max, Butler
Shadab, Narine, Strac, Hasan/Mustafiz
-------------------------------------------
Pandeya

Purpose of World XI was never to assemble best XI (That actually doesn't exist in T20 - we can make a 2nd set & I won't be surprised if they beat this unit 3-2), rather it's to bring "Western including WI" players in PAK, and this team is serving the purpose perfectly. Only that, they should have tried to bring at least one Indian; may be UV for the the series - don't think BCCI would have blocked that, subject to GoI clearance & UV could have entertained crowd with his Punjabi bhangra as well.

That's a very good team. Kudos to Sethi, he has really done a lot for Pakistan cricket in such a short time.

Surprised that you did not pick Rashid in your team.

I will have Root over Smith and AB in T20s. Root can score much faster than Smith and AB is out of form.

1. Warner
2. Guptill
3. Kohli
4. Root
5. Buttler
6. Stokes
7. Pandya
8. Rashid
9. Narine
10. Starc
11. Hassan

Warner and Guptill are the most explosive LOs openers right now. The middle order is solid with Kohli, Root, and Buttler who can all bat at a very good SR. Then, I have two hard hitters in Stokes and Pandya. The tail can all hit big.

Bowling wise, this team has 2 top fast bowlers, 2 support pacers, 1 T20 specialist spinner, and another very good spin bowling all-rounder.

@MHHS SO imran tahir is the only plaer that desrves to be i true world eleven.but u have ti admit that tamim can make it into world test and odi eleven .very happy to see him in the list and dont forget miller the killer.

Let's cross our fingers and hope that this goes well. Surely this will allow PCB to pursue others to come and play again in Pakistan (Starting with Asian neighbors - I can't forsee a India V Pakistan anytime soon - then extend the offers to others)

Huge respect for all the 14 players visting Pakistan. They will remembered in History as the one who revived cricket in Pakistan. These players will be treated like Kings in our country InshAllah

May be in Test, not ODI. In fact, he'll struggle to make Asian ODI team - his game isn't suited for ODI. Heis in tremendous for, so getting runs in ODI, but you have to look at it like YK - he had about 5/6 ODI centuries in a couple of years sometimes in between 2006-09 period.

Great squad.

Didn't expect Du Plessis to participate, so that's a major win.

This World XI is more than capable of taking Pakistan to the cleaners.

On the funny side,

Before the start of 1st T20 , PCB should honour Thisara Parera for his historical drop in CT that made it possible what we are about to witness next month..
Jokes apart, its a great news: I like Faf, unlike De villiers he never disappoint[except for few handful performances , ABD never performs against his master Kohli team (India)]

Lol respect the security personnel and the PCB.

It was never going to be a point of reviving cricket in Pakistan. It was about when cricket can be played in Pakistan without worrying about security and not VVIP security provided.

The real goal should be:
Convincing teams to tour even with VIP level security.
PSL mostly held in Pakistan.

MMHS morne is another who can make odi world elevn squad

Probably not - by squad, you mean 15 men, or at most 16; which should have maximum 3, specialist pacers at most, may be you can stress that to 4 in 16 men team (but all 4 can't be genuine No. 11 contender). I don't think, he comes ahead of Strac, Amir, Hasan & Rabada. Then he has to fight it out with Hazlwood, Boult, JK, BK, Southee ....

Guptil may be - I actually hardly watch T20 & can't recall Guptil doing much damage in grounds larger than 50 metres. Root is a great choice - I picked Smith for his form, but Root can replace him. However none actually better than AB - on song AB is probably the most amazing striker (but genuine bat) I have seen since Viv. Rashid isn't a bad choice, but one IPL thrashing has forced him to bowl faster, need to wait few more matches when he faces stronger teams. Pandeya can replace Maxi, because he is a pacer; but that makes 4 pacers, which is a bit over kill - I think Maxi is much better fielder & more destructive player of pace. Pandeya won't be facing spinners only when playing for World XI.

Great squad.

This World XI is more than capable of taking Pakistan to the cleaners.

Pakistani Team after winning the Champions Trophy must have high confidence level and despite a good World XI squad they can't take Pakistan to the cleaners, also to note the fact that they only have one fast bowler in their lineup. Pakistan should win this series easily if not whitewash them.

Morne is a white ball beast

Wish it was ODIs then we could really see our CT champions take on the best...

Morne is a white ball beast

His stats tells so, but I couldn't recall which indicates he is probably not the bowler who runs through the side. Still tough to make the World XI. Question is, is he better than other 3/4?

Rabada is mediocre in ODIs

Even though he hasn't performed on bigger stages he has bowled quite well consistently from his debut onwards and this was shown when he became the Number 1 ODI bowler in rankings just before the Champions Trophy.

He's just okay in ODIs, he can be expensive but will usually get 1-2 wickets at least. I'd take Boult over him, Boult's really underrated in ODIs.

Depends.

If the pitches are flat, the World XI will be a formidable opponent.

Morkel
Tahir
Badree
Sammy
Perera/Elliot

That's not bad at all especially if the pitch slows down.
