From Jan 2021 to Dec 2022, Pak test side will have a relatively easier period. With only overseas tours to West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, you will be playing at home against sides like South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and England. I hope the selectors have the foresight to use this period to inject young talent in the side that can help help Pak become a top 4 test side in the next 3-4 years. No need to set any lofty goals considering your current ranking and the limited talent pool available.

Two areas that stand out are an ageing batting lineup and a fast bowling quartet that can help you compete against top sides.

Batting: Barring Babar, you don't have any other player below age of 26. However, it also doesn't make sense to drop players just because they are old. You don't want to end up in a situation you are getting out for scores of 53 and 59 (remember the 2002 series against Aus in UAE). At this point, everyone is out with daggers against Abid, Shan, Azhar, Haris, and Fawad either because of their age (Azhar, Abid, and Fawad), fitness (Haris), or their average career progress (Shan). I, for one, am not in favor of making wholesale changes. Plus, you simply do not have the players to replace five batters at the same time. So what Pakistan should do?

Unless both Abid and Shan fail spectacularly, I would leave the opening pair intact. Both have done reasonably well without setting the world on fire. Also, with Sami Aslam gone and Imam's poor test technique, you don't have many options. Imran Butt had only one good season in 2019 which followed years of mediocrity. Likes of Omair Yousuf and Ali Zaryab are far from a finished product. So your only options are in the middle order. I would infact make Azhar open in case you want to drop one of Abid or Shan or either one of them is unfit.

In the middle order, my bet is on Saud Shakeel and Haider Ali. Saud has consistency issues and Haider has played only one full first class season. But they stand out from the rest of the options. Abdullah needs at least one more first class season and I am not sure how good is Kamran Ghulam with 2020 being his first breakout season. Usman Salahuddin has scored only one century this season and had a medicore last season. Saud has few solid seaons behind him and Haider Ali is good enough for me to play for tests in Pakistan.

So keep both Saud and Haider with the test side starting with the South Africa series and introduce them in place of Abid, Shan, Azhar, Fawad, or Haris, depending on whoever fails in NZ or has continued fitness issues (Haris), at appropriate time. I am assuming Azhar can open if one of Abid or Shan is dropped. Assuming you have both Saud and Haider playing for Pak test side along with Babar within the next few months, you will have 3 batsmen age 26 or below who can have potentially long careers for Pakistan. And then you go from there to make additional changes in the next 2 years as the opportunity arises.

Fast bowlers: Despite Abbas' clear drop in pace and his lack of wicket taking ability, I would still keep him with the test side. He keeps the run scoring in check and will always be effective when there is something in the pitch or there is low bounce. Shaheen should be the second name followed by Hassan Ali as he is fully fit now. Hassan can reverse the old ball and brings pace and energy when the ball is old. After Abbas, Shaheen, and Hassan, no one stands out. Likes of Sohail Khan and Imran Khan are old and tried and tested. Likes of Husnain, Musa, and Rauf haven't played any first class cricket. So for the fourth pacer, either pick someone like Sohail or Tabish who can do the job for next 1-2 years or continue playing the likes of Musa and Naseem till the improve. Sorry but that's the best I can see based on our resources.

Thank you for reading a long post and I look forward to constructive discussion based on data.

Very good post. Here’s a rough XI for the home Tests against South Africa.

1. Shan Masood
2. Abid Ali
3. Azhar Ali
4. Babar Azam (c)
5. Saud Shakeel
6. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
7. Zafar Gohar
8. Sajid Khan
9. Hassan Ali
10. Mohammad Abbas
11. Shaheen Afridi

As we progress over the year, we can phase out Azhar Ali for Haider Ali or Kamran Ghulam or another name entirely, whoever we see more Test potential with at the time.

I’ve also gone with 5 bowlers in this lineup, I think twin spinners are necessary, but we can potentially drop one of the pacers for a specialist bat.

I also think it is unlikely that Yasir Shah won’t play, he’s very likely to get selected. But if we were to begin building a new team, he’s the first person I’d drop.

If we're rebuilding then at least one of Abid, Fawad, Haris and Azhar needs to go before the SA series and we need to identify in which series we will gradually bring youngsters into all of their places.

The first on my list of replacements are Saud Shakeel and Salman Agha. Neither is going to be our saviour but it's about time we created a new team with clear incentives for the best FC performers.

And of course the first point on any rebuild - GET RID OF MISBAH

For God sake please STOP using phrases like : we are rebuilding, he is young and learning right now. I want to see competitive test cricket. Please stop treating test cricket like A team tours. I was a massive test cricket fan growing up but now losing interests bcoz all teams are home track bullies these days.

Terrific post.

There is no reason to want continuity. The batsmen over 30 are not worth retaining.

I never want too many changes at once - the whole point is that you build a core of players aged 21-30 - not younger or older - and replace the oldest player each year.

The only players in this eleven who deserve a SQUAD place on merit for the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle are:

Mohammad Rizwan
Faheem Ashraf (SENA conditions only)
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Naseem Shah

I will add ....

Shan Masood

....as a short-term stopgap.

I will then add four injured absentees in the 21-30 age group:

Babar Azam
Shadab Khan
Imam-up-Haq
Hasan Ali

So I have eight current active Test cricketers who make the cut for the future squad, including 1 overage player (Shan Masood) and 1 underage player (Naseem Shah).

I will permit myself one more overage or underage player - and I’m picking ....

Rohail Nazir.

That completes my quota of 3 overage and underage players - so the door now closes forever on:

Abid Ali
Azhar Ali
Haris Sohail
Fawad Alam
Asad Shafiq
Mohammad Abbas
Yasir Shah
Sarfraz Ahmed
Sohail Khan

I will ring each of those eight men to tell them that their international careers are over.

I still only have 9 players.

I need 2 more spinners aged 21-30 for Asia, and the presence of Shaheen and Naseem means that only spinners who can bat are eligible:

Sajid Khan
Zafar Gohar

I only have four guys who can bat in the Top Six: I need at least 3 more who will be aged 21-30 by the end of this year:

Saud Shakeel
Haider Ali
Mohammad Nawaz
Usman Salahuddin sneaks in - but he’s on probation as he’s already 30 - he will just be a reserve.

I need another all-rounder aged 21-30 who can bowl fast. That’s easy:

Amad Butt

.....took 6-60 in the unofficial Test in NZ.

I need at least one more quick aged 21-30 too, and I already have too many short quicks.

Sameen Gul
Ehsan Adil

So now I have a man squad for the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle:

1. Shan Masood (overage)
2. Imam-ul-Haq
3. Saud Shakeel
4. Babar Azam
5. Mohammad Nawaz
6. Haider Ali
7. Usman Salahuddin (almost overage)

8. Mohammad Rizwan
9. Rohail Khan

10. Shadab Khan
11. Zafar Gohar
12. Sajid Khan

13. Faheem Ashraf
14. Amad Butt

15. Shaheen Shah Afridi
16. Naseem Shah
17. Hasan Ali
18. Ehsan Adil
19. Sameen Gul

That’s a big enough squad.

I’m going to add Mubasir Khan as a development player - I’m sick of picking kids, and him and Rohail Nazir are the only youngsters in my squad.

Pakistan just don't have the quality to assemble a good team to overseas. They should try to assemble a team capable of competing at home in the window you are talking about

Right now other than Shaheen and babar noone looks even remotely close to a good test cricketer

hear the same talk whenever pak tour southern hemisphere

all this is pointless unless players get experience of these conditions, need an A-team tour to precede these tours

at least one 3 first class game tour every year.
