who would win in a hypothetical contest between these 2 great sides?

2005 team beat Aussies who were at their absolute peak and lost to india in 06/07 who were simultaneously in their prime too.

2011/12 english side beat india away from home albeit an Indian side on the decline and also destroyed the Aussies away from home.

I would say 2012 English Test side was better and probably would win this hypothetical contest.

2005 team by far.... Harmison, Flintof, Jones, Hogard... wosssshhh tht was a tight attack.... maybe a little weak on the batting but still strong enough....surprisingly both teams lost very badly to pak right after the ashes wins ...2/0 and 3/0 respectively

Apart from that Ashes, what had that 2005 team done? That time was highly ineffective outside of England.

2012 team won in Australia and in India. England had a fully balanced team.

Australia in 2005 was also a much better team that they beat ... they lost 5-0 to probably the greatest team since pak of 80z ...2012 team had much weaker teams to deal with ... oppositions almost everywhere wasnt to their level ...

2005 team had relatively weaker batting and weak spin. Only pace department was good.

2012 team had everything. They had Swann and Panesar. They had Cook, Strauss, KP, Ian Bell, Matt Prior etc. They had Anderson and Broad.

2005 team had superior pace bowling but 2012 team wins in everything else.

spin wwas definitely the stronger suit for the 2012 team.. batting you can argue .. Strauss/Treschotick/Vaughn/KP/Flintoff isnt a bad game

The 2005 team was much stronger. It had good batters and a very good bowling attack.

Both had very strong batting.

2005 had stronger fast bowling. But 2011 had Swann, and a better keeper in Prior.

2005 better led tactically by Vaughan, while Strauss tried to get into an unassailable position before attacking and failed to win some tests due to overcautiousness.

Apart from that Ashes, what had that 2005 team done? That time was highly ineffective outside of England.

Won 3-0 in WI featuring Lara, seven test wins on the bounce in England, then beat a very strong SA side away with Strauss piling the runs on, before beating Australia in 2005.

Wheels came off a bit after that due to injuries and general wear and tear on the pace bowlers.

- One thing to note is that 2011/12 English team had one of the best English spinner ever in Graeme Swann.

- Also Matt Prior was a top keeper batsman while Geraint Jones was never as good or consistent with the bat.

- Tail of 2005 team was pretty long with Harmison, Anderson, Jones, Hoggard, Giles. While by 2011/12 England realized that and bowlers who had bit of ability with the bat in Broad, Tim Bresnan, Swann were part of the squad giving that extra bit of depth to the batting which can define key moments in the game.

The advantage I can think of for the 2005 team was that it had a genuine all rounder in Flintoff, attacking opener in Trescothick and so much variety in the pace bowling unit.

However, I think in terms of overall combination 2011/12 team was better with KP, Anderson, Swann, Cook at their peak or entertaining it. Ian Bell and Trott were pretty decent technically and providing a lot of stability in the middle order while in my opinion Strauss was probably one of the best test captain Eng produced and his achievements manifest that. Also as mentioned earlier 2011/12 team has decent depth in the batting as well.
