What's new

2020 Democratic Party presidential candidates [Bernie Sanders drops out Update#741]

Trump already has been in the office for few years now. Biden will have to start from scratch (sorry VP experience which is nothing more than a secretary job doesn’t count). Look how many words (not even sentence) Mike Peance has spoken?

Also no VP has ever ran for president before iirc. So, history is against him.

Is this a joke? We've had multiple VPs run, and in some cases win the presidency.
1796: John Adams
1800: Thomas Jefferson
1836: Martin Van Buren
1904: Theodore Roosevelt
1908: William Howard Taft
1988: George H.W. Bush

The Vice President becoming President is hardly new, even if it hasn't happened in a while. Al Gore also ran in 2000.

Certainly the Democrats (at least most of them) will vote for a leftist. But will the independents? I don't think so. They make about 10%-12% of the voters. Let alone the Republicans.

We are still a center/center right country for the most part. So leftist policies have 50% support at best.

Not really. More than 70% Americans (including 52% Repulicans) support Medicare for all. More than 60% Americans support tuition free college for students with hosehold income of less than $125K. More than 70% Americans (54% Republicans) support higher taxes on individuals earning more than $10 million per year, based on a poll conducted by Fox News. Even Trump ran on some leftist policies like no wars, higher taxes on rich and not touching entitlements (like SSI and medicare). So support for leftist polices is much higher than 50%. I agree Republicans won't vote for a Democrat, no matter how much they agree with progressive policies. However, support for progressive policies is much higher than expected, among independts.

Native American :))

Unlike career politicians, Trump has nothing to lose!

The guy never planned to be president and never expected to win the election himself, he's happy with the one tenure. He's not desperate for a second one, the guy stands to make a killing from media endorsements, books, business etc... after having 'American President' on his CV. So for him winning another election is a bonus, The Republican establishment will work harder on his campaign than he ever will.

The biggest challenge any Democrat will have is to remove the 'politician/bureaucrat/Washington proxy' tag vis a vis Trump. Plus if he gets the Chinese to wilt and win generous trade concessions from them (highly likely sooner or later) plus some sort of North Korean peace gesture on paper before the elections, he has something to show for it. If he gets Maduro to wilt as well there another win for him.

He likes portraying US muscle globally and the Americans like watching him do it.

Seriously which Democrat has any potential??

Seriously which Democrat has any potential??

So far no one, maybe Elizabeth Warren.

Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand are establishment puppets. They are, all of a sudden, supporting the policies that Bernie pushed for, but their voting records will expose them. All three went to Wall Street to gauge their interest for 2020, 180-degree turn in their policies in the last 18 months will hurt them big time. These three are looking very similar to 2016 Hillary Clinton minus the email fiasco. You can put Biden in this group if he decides to run.

Elizabeth Warren has been pretty solid on progressive policies and has a very consistent voting record on progressive policies. However, Native American stuff in the past 6 months has totally backfired. On policies alone, she will crush Trump, but Trump will keep repeating Native American stuff to her face. Also, supporting Hillary in 2016 over Sanders, won't sit well with many progressive voters.

I don't know much about Klobuchar. She seems consistent on affordable healthcare but hasn't said if she is for Medicare for all. Still very quiet on rest of her policies.

Rest of the declared candidates are unknowns, and only there for national-level attention and to divide up the delegates.

Bernie Sanders is still the best bet to take on Trump. But the establishment is doing everything to deny him the nomination. First, attack him as he is "not a Democrat". Putting as many candidates in the race as possible, so no one gets enough delegates to win the straight nomination. Hopefully, 2016 was an eye opener for the democratic establishment and leadership, and should push for more progressive policies, as voters are supporting more and more progressive policies. Otherwise, we will end up with 4 more years of Trump.

They are all spineless. If ppl like Ben Shapiro and McCarthy are manipulating them into silence and submission then they are all cowards and spineless politicians with no future. Trump will obliterate all them both in presidential debates and in elections.

Yes the way the Democratic establishment was quick to round on Ilhan Omar was particularly galling.

Perish the thought lobbyists have any influence on policy in Washington !

These backstabbers will get the same treatment by the base (see Hilary Clinton's presidential run as a reference point).

No one exciting from the democrat side. I wanna see bloomberg throw his hat in the race.

Trump got lucky this time, not a single potential candidate from dems worth considering to vote for. The worst ones are Booker , Harris and Pocahontas.

The 1960 JFK campaign should be used as a blueprint for the Democratic Party.

Jack Kennedy was not even the best politician in his own family and yet he beat someone who became VP just five years after exiting the Navy.

If trump goes against "Pocahontas" on policies alone, instead of name calling, he will get crushed.

Maybe there is no such evidence at all, two years and what is it now 17 investigations and nothing, zilch, nada, zero. Democrats are living on desperation.

The Muller investigation wasn't only about trump, but about trump's campaign and everyone who was part of that campaign. There has been enough evidence, so far, to keep the investigation going keep everyone interested. If trump hasn't been charged yet, doesn't mean Muller has no evidence against trump.

As for Democrats living on desperation, have you seen all the story changes from Rudy Giuliani? All those story changes, and lies about trump tower meetings, and talks of all the pardons (including self-pardon) makes trump look more desperate than the Democrats.

The idiots running the DNC haven't yet realized that the red scare doesn't work anymore, at least not for the democrats.

Bernie Sanders announces second US presidential bid

US Senator Bernie Sanders says he will run again for president in 2020, making a second attempt to win the Democratic Party's nomination.

The 77-year-old Vermont senator became a progressive political star in 2016 although he lost his candidacy bid.

In an email to supporters, he said it was time to complete the "political revolution" they had started.

An outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, Mr Sanders has described him as a "pathological liar" and "racist".

Mr Sanders - an independent who caucuses with the Democrats - is one of the best-known names to join a crowded and diverse field of Democratic candidates, and early polls suggest he is far ahead.

His calls for universal government-provided healthcare, a $15 national minimum wage and free college education electrified young voters, raised millions of dollars in small donations and are now pillars of the party's left wing.

Mr Sanders, who lost the 2016 Democratic primary to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said in his email: "Three years ago, when we talked about these and other ideas, we were told that they were 'radical' and 'extreme'.

"Together, you and I and our 2016 campaign began the political revolution. Now, it is time to complete that revolution and implement the vision that we fought for."

After building a grass-roots political movement that roiled the Democratic Party in 2016, Bernie Sanders is making another run at the prize.

This time, he won't be the rumpled underdog. He'll start the race near the front of the pack - with advantages in small-donor fundraising, name recognition and a 50-state organisation of loyalists.

His front-runner status will come with a price, however. Unlike 2016, when Hillary Clinton largely avoided confronting the Vermont senator for fear of alienating his supporters, his opponents will have no such reluctance this time.

In 2016, the self-proclaimed "Democratic socialist" staked out a progressive agenda in contrast with Ms Clinton's pragmatic centrism. Now, in part because of Mr Sanders' efforts, the party has moved left on issues like healthcare, education and income inequality. His message is no longer unique.

The 77-year-old senator will keep his devoted base, but will some former supporters opt for a fresh face? That could lead to conflict with those who believe a Bernie "revolution" is the only way forward, inflaming Democratic wounds not fully healed from the last campaign.

In a crowded field, Mr Sanders has a realistic shot - but it could be a bumpy ride.

Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, John Delaney and Julian Castro are among those who have also announced their intention to run in the Democratic primary in 2020, the first time more than one woman has competed.

If Mr Sanders is successful in his bid, he will become the oldest presidential candidate in US history.

In his email, which lays out a series of policy issues, Mr Sanders also says: "You know as well as I do that we are living in a pivotal and dangerous moment in American history.

"We are running against a president who is a pathological liar, a fraud, a racist, a sexist, a xenophobe and someone who is undermining American democracy as he leads us in an authoritarian direction."

Who is Bernie Sanders?

Mr Sanders is the longest-serving independent in congressional history, but competes for the Democratic nomination as he says standing as a third-party candidate would diminish his chances of winning the presidency.

He attended the University of Chicago, and in the 1960s and 1970s participated in antiwar and civil rights activism, like the 1963 March on Washington.

He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1990, the first independent to achieve such a feat in 40 years. He served there until he ran for and won a seat in the Senate in 2007.

Mr Sanders entered the race for the 2016 Democratic nomination as a long-shot candidate but emerged as a surprise star during a series of televised debates.

He labels himself a Democratic socialist, which he has defined as someone who seeks to "create an economy that works for all, not just the very wealthy".

Mr Sanders also has a diplomacy-first attitude towards foreign policy and voted against the US invasion of Iraq in 2002.

He became Mrs Clinton's closest rival, but she ultimately won the nomination before losing the presidential election to Mr Trump.

In January, Mr Sanders apologised to female staff members on his 2016 campaign after allegations of harassment against senior aides emerged.

Several aides complained of a "predatory culture" in his campaign and alleged that senior male staff had mistreated younger workers.

Irrespective of who the Democrats
pick Trump will win by a much bigger margin than he did in 2016. Isssues like illegal immigration, late term abortion, rising "socialist" movement are extremely effective and plays right into Trumps hands.

Also taking on China and renegotiating NAFTA, speaking about buiding infrastructure and bringing the cost of prescription drugs down are right from the Democrats playbook which leaves them with less ammunition to campaign on.

All heil Bernie Sanders!!

Can't wait for Trump vs Bernie 2020!

Overly Socialist-leaning Bernie is hardly going to put up a challenge, even fellow democrats are wary of him and will do everything they can to grab his leg and pull him down. Trump's votebank still love and adore him - he is still going to win the electoral college by a landslide.

Bernie is the only one I can think of who can stand tall against Trump's insults during the debate. Trump would eat someone like Warren alive on the stage.

Bernie’s appearance on Fox News was a political master stroke.

Really hope he doesn't get the nomination

Bernie! Bernie!

What an embarrassment this party has become to have people like crooked Hillary, grandpa Sanders, hugger Biden, bartender Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and traitor Ilhan.

Fully support Trump in 2020 and I hope he crushes all of these jobbers. Make America great again!

In all fairness, Dems will get absolutely thumped.

Bernie is an extreme socialist. Biden won’t go far in light of recent sexual allegations. Pete has created sensation but reckon it will be short-lived. Most people won’t elect gay president and his recent remark regarding Bernie Sanders hasn’t gone well with other Democrats. It was too early to say that sort of thing. Warren has no personality and Native American argument has only hurt her campaign.

Trump on the other hand has too many things going for him; good economy and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the history (though it’s probably not his doing but the guy in the office always gets the credit/ blame for the economy.. that’s how it has always been.)

When and how did America stop being great?

A vast majority of people who say that are white Americans without college education. I doubt the odd one is one of them. He is an indian just being a troll.

Most Indians in visas or even those that are American citizens now, actually don’t like Trump.

There is no telling Trump will self destruct by the time the next election rolls in. Some of his statements and policies are indicating he has been able to fool the world about his intelligence, and he is truly an idiot. In his arrogance he thinks he can say what he wants and get away with it. It may fly with his hardcore supporters but elections are decided by swing voters and they can’t be too impressed by his latest statement encouraging another foreign interference during the election.

Joe Biden is a horrible campaigner. In the debate he couldn't even answer why he opposed busing and sided with segregationist Republicans.

He still bangs on about bipartisanship ignoring that Republicans obstructed and obstructed during President Obama's eight years in office when he was Vice President. Does he forget that Mitch McConnell brags that his greatest political moment was denying Merrick Garland his seat on the Supreme Court ?

His brand of politics is outdated and his "Middle Class Joe" persona is a sham when he's spent his career as a bag man for the credit card industry based out of Delaware.

Perhaps however Warren’s popularity is doing Sanders no favours. People on the left are asking “why vote for Bernie when you can get most of his policies (minus all the baggage he comes with) via Warren?

Just pick Bernie or Biden. No other candidate is charismatic enough.

I mentioned before that Biden is the only realistic option. Others are not charismatic enough. Bernie's policies are good but I just can't see him winning.

Democrats should stop useless divisions and focus on the candidate who is likely to win. Biden is not perfect but he is the right man to take on Trump.

Eventually Biden will go down and Elizabeth will be nominated.
Trump wants Biden to be nominated, it will be so easy for him to defeat Biden.

Democrats has not a single good candidate this time, Trump got lucky, he will win easily.

Warren is the only Dem potential candidate who make the campaign and debates interesting. Even outspoken trunk is also afraid of "Pokahantas".

Look at Warren's poll number. Unlikely to win.

You are correct though that Democrats do not have many great candidates. But, for the sake of greater good, they should unite against Trump (doesn't matter which candidate).

Biden is a terrible choice, he's part of the status quo. If he wins the ticket I'll either abstain from voting or vote for a third party candidate, even if I was in a crucial swing state.

Abstaining means you are voting for Trump.

There is no such thing called clean politician. All politicians are dirty.

The 1960 JFK campaign should be used as a blueprint for the Democratic Party.

Jack Kennedy was not even the best politician in his own family and yet he beat someone who became VP just five years after exiting the Navy.

Not sure about the relevance of 'just five years after existing the Navy' in the context of holding public office as the VP/President.

General Eisenhower was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces till May 1952, and took office as the President of the US eight months later in January 1953.

I don't care, Biden is uninspiring. He's just going to be a white Obama sprinkled with some Clinton, I've never been a fan of any of Obama's policies. It's not about being "dirty" or "clean", Biden lacks charisma and most importantly his policies suck, no millennial or gen z kid will ever into buy into his manifesto.

A vast majority of people who say that are white Americans without college education. I doubt the odd one is one of them. He is an indian just being a troll.

Most Indians in visas or even those that are American citizens now, actually don’t like Trump.

I had only voted Democrat (including voting for Obama both times). However, I voted for Trump last Presidential election. Shall likely vote for Trump again this time.

I am one of those voters who keeps an open mind and researches candidates. So far, I have been supremely disappointed with most candidates on offer on the democrat side.

I am aware that many polls show Trump's numbers trailing several candidates on the Democrat side. So, I may be proven wrong. But as of this moment, unless a new candidate enters the field on the Democrats side, I strongly believe that Trump's re-election is a given. Locked and sealed.

Trump will clean sweep an election with those democrate candidates.

Democrates will need to put a strong candidate to take on trump which they dont have, they should in and get one where trump came from, the business community, someone like bill gates or jeff bezos unfortunatly they wont stand on a democratic platform.

LOL at Republicans pretending to be open minded and advising democrats on who should they nominate. Its truly amazing.

You know I really wanna vote against Trump but all the Dems are so bad that how I can I possibly vote for these people?? What the hell am I supposed to do?

Honestly, don't see Biden winning. The more Biden interacts with media and public, the more his numbers will continue to fall. His campaign team knows it, and they've wrapped him in cotton wool, but they can't do that forever. Most of the candidates in the race are part of the status quo, only Bernie, Warren, Yang, and a couple of others are actually progressive, of which Warren and Sanders have an actual shot at winning.

I think Biden will continue to fall fast, and will likely drop out before Iowa, or after Super Tuesday. The race is going to narrow down to Bernie, Warren, Harris, and maybe Buttigieg. In the end, I reckon it'll come down to Bernie Sanders vs Elizabeth Warren.

Democrats shouldn't do anything stupid like they did last time.

Just pick Bernie or Biden. No other candidate is charismatic enough.

Both Bernie and Biden can beat Trump.

Bernie or Warren because Biden will lose, he is a corporate stooge.

Rightful candidates, I dislike Warren too but no one can deny her policy explanations are very good.

First US women prez and is a liberal and leader of Left(almost).

Everyone eventually becomes corporate stooge. Do you think any politician is truly independent?

There are many powerful lobbies that are untouchable. No politician can truly remove them. I am referring to Deep State.

If every politician thought that way, those lobbies truly cannot be removed. People are coming around to NRA now. Democratic party is largely opposed to NRA. You wouldn't say that 10-20 years ago. Same way, the health insurance lobby, the pharma lobby, the fossil fuel lobby and the prison lobby are being increasingly targeted. Their days are numbered. They have at most 2 decades of life time.

You are saying Deep State doesn't exist?

There is no such thing as independent politician. All are puppets. Anyone who tries to do anything meaningful would probably get assassinated like JFK.

Older voters favour Biden, younger voters favour Bernie. Warren’s support is more even than the other two but she still trails Biden overall.

I think Biden will eventually be the candidate. Bernie is good but I don't see him getting nomination.

National Polls should be taken with a grain of salt at this stage though, what really matters is who performs the best in the first few contests, and Super Tuesday.

For the initial contests, Bernie looks poised to carry New Hampshire and Nevada, Biden looks like he'll take South Carolina. Iowa is a tossup, and the polls for there seem to be all over the place. After that comes Super Tuesday, which has Alabama, American Samoa, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachussets, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virgina, and Democrats Abroad up for grabs. From those, I reckon Biden will take the five southeastern states and American Samoa, Warren will take Massachussets and maybe Maine, and Bernie will take California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Utah, Vermont, and Democrats Abroad. Texas will be between Bernie and Biden, though Bernie has a great chance if O'Rourke drops out because of his support among Latinos. I'm predicting Minnesota to be a tossup between Bernie and Warren.

Overall, I think the early contests favour Bernie, and he will head into the rest of the primaries with a lot of momentum. Warren will probably end up dropping out, and it'll be Bernie vs Biden. If Bernie can win both Texas and California, him winning the nomination will be a forgone conclusion, those two states are absolutely huge.

Gabbard is languishing in the polls and not qualifying for the debates. The Rashtra Rafale Swami Shri Shiva Singh Sanghi Sena isn’t pumping enough money into her campaign by the looks of it.

Sanders and Warren are splitting the progressive vote as things stand. It looks unlikely that they will emerge as the two front runners, because the establishment types will coalesce around one candidate at some point, most probably Biden. The progressives need to do likewise: flip a coin or something and have one of them throw in their lot with the other. I would prefer Sanders, since he’s more likely to attract disgruntled, traditionally Democratic voters back into the fold.
