What's new

2024, an annus horribilis, a year of horror for Pakistan cricket ...

Pakistan have gone down the Sri Lanka route. No disrespect to them they would probably beat us at the minute. But they were also once a great side and now you see them playing against top sides and expect them to lose 99% of the time. Pakistan is now exactly the same. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies are more or less on par with each other. We'll have extremely competitive series against Bangladesh from now onwards.

We always used to have a go at our team for minnow bashing, now we can't minnow bash. A win against Uganda wouldn't be a guarantee just as a win against USA wasn't. We are now minnows and the damage could be irreversible. Will take a lot to change fortunes of Pakistan cricket.

Sure, we may still have the odd moment of brilliance but this is the end of Pakistan as a top cricketing nation. Sadly I can see South Africa eventually following us aswell with only England, Australia and India left as top nations; New Zealand just below them.

Pakistan yet to win a Test at home since 2022

Pakistan cricket has 'structural issues' and they are 'falling behind' their competitors, says Nasser Hussain

"Simply because, historically, Pakistan are a mercurial side. They go up and down, win games, lose games, they'll be out of World Cups and then suddenly in a World Cup final.

"But actually, of late with Pakistan cricket - the two most recent World Cups and now six Tests in a row - they've lost."

"It's all down and it all has a Groundhog Day feel to it. They do OK in the first innings and then second time round, the openers and the top order fail, leaving the middle order to try and dig them out of a hole, like what happened late last night and into today [in Multan]."

People are ignoring the fitness gap as well. Theirs too much attention on skill gap which I agree but fitness gap is often ignored.

For example Shan and Abdullah gave their wickets away cause they were too tired in the heat, but brooks and root showed no signs of stopping even with root getting cramps?

Then a tired England on day 2 still scored 100 in 20 overs and bullied pakistan on day 3 and 4 while fresh, While a tired pakistan on day 4 gave England their entire batting team cause all of them were too tired to even run between the wickets?

England bowlers showed zero signs of fatigue besides maybe that bashir guy while abrar was hospitalised and every other bowler could barely bowl?

Night and day fitness gap not just with England, but I observed this with Bangladesh as well

Seen some dark times in Pakistan cricke: 2007...2009...2010. But this year somehow takes the cake. And that's saying something when you consider the three years I mentioned.

Pakistan cricket has been an absolute horror show since that reserve day vs India.

I don't understand what has happened to the bowlers across formats. Batters sucks too. Fielding sucks. The fitness level is quite horrible and it's not just a couple of guys, it's basically the entire team. What a dark and depressing time it is in Pakistan cricket.

It's kinda amazing how that match is a flash-point for everything going horribly wrong with our cricket. Prior to that match the PAK pace attack was being hailed as one of the best in the world. Within two days of a one day match, everything fell off a cliff and we have been in free-fall ever since.

2007-2010 atleast had silver linings.

Again not ideal but it was a silver lining, I highly doubt pakistani team would have reached no 1 rank if it wasn't for UAE and a hard reset needed which was achieved at the time.

Again not defending it, just saying their was always a silver lining.

2007 had uner 19 victory and finalist of t20
2009 had a t20 cup
2010 had a silver lining for future events until 2016.

So yes the attack on Sri lanka, The ban on pak cricket, the death of woolmer, the Loss to Ireland, the spot fixing saga was bad but they all had silver linings.

2024 has zero silver linings. Nothing you can look at and say, it'll be alright for the future.

Not to mention

Sydney Test loss

4-1 thrashing in NZ T20I series

2-0 loss in England T20I series

And the year is not over yet with 2 Tests left, a multi-format tour of SA and an ODI tour of Australia

PAK won the U-19 WC in 2006, not 2007. 2009 T20 WC is the only silver lining. 2009 also had the horror tour of Australia. 2010 had the traumatic semi-final exit. And the attack on the Sri Lankan team is an event whose magnitude cannot be understated. I am just glad that the Sri Lankan players escaped with their lives that day. Thanks to the heroic efforts of that bus driver.

100% agrees with you.

Just stating that 2024 is rock bottom. Nothing is worse
